I hate it when people delete everything so that there is not any context to their post. Brian is in charge of the archive on another list so that does influence his opinion. Making someone Else's job easier is not as important as understanding the message.

Well, we'll have to disagree on this. The custom here is top posting, for the most part, leaving a trail of quotation multiple days deep afterward, which makes it insane when someone is trying to search the archive for original content.

Anyone who's been following a topic through its lifespan is likely to know what's being replied to if it's an immediately previous message, anyway. It's an easy matter when you hit the Reply button to do a CTRL+A followed by delete to remove all extraneous content not necessary for context preservation, but that's not going to happen, either.

Yeah, I don’t actually disagree with you Brian, I should clarify that *one* message quoted should be sufficient (or maybe a very specific part of it, as you do, and your method of not-quite-top-posting is usually quite clear). I myself am not always conscious of all the crap that is included after my message (as you say, sometimes it’s probably pages and pages of replies) because I don’t often read it. It’s something I’ve been made aware of on a few occasions and when that happens I do try to delete extraneous content.

On another list I am on, there are a few people who do not quote *anything*. It's almost impossible to tell what they are talking about at times, because there's no context at all except an (often vague) subject line.

If you're going to remove everything underneath your message, at least give us some idea of who/what you are replying to so folks aren't left wondering.

More frustrating, to me, is when a threaded topic begins to have multiple threads either because somebody changes the subject line minutely or because an email client isn't smart enough to continue said thread. This is when it is important to be able to know what someone is replying to. Sending a message without any context makes it almost impossible, if the topic has multiple threads, to figure out where the reply was actually directed.
A few seconds of simple message editing, especially if there are a lot of points to be responded to, makes it oh so much easier to read through them rather than having to read the top message, then scroll down underneath to see the questions, just as an example.

Just FYI, it really is almost always the subject line change. As "archive administrator" for the Win10 group I am constantly re-merging topics. It also drives me crazy when folks do something like, "Fixed: Excel copy issue," when the topic had been "Excel copy issue." People who've been following the topic will see a final message with the fix contained in it if they were interested in that topic at all. When the subject line gets changed like this it splits off from the original, which makes later searching insanely more complicated and frustrating than just posting the message to the original topic would.

There appears to be some issue with the Windows 10 mail app, too, as I have noticed that after subjects get so long that replies almost always end up taking out a single space. What I haven't yet taken the time to data collect on is whether this is after a specific character count.

I have always used, and will continue to use, interspersed quotation-reply-quotation-reply in instances where it would be insanely difficult to know what is actually being replied to were it all just at the top of a message. I consider that a courtesy and it's so much easier to understand when essential context is preserved. Even then, though, I trim out content from the quoted material that is extraneous, keeping only what's needed to supply context.

Hello, everyone.

I don’t know if this has been caused by a recent Office 365 update, but my message list view in Outlook no longer displays complete header info about e-mails as I arrow up and down the list.

I can get the time of the message, and the subject, but that’s it.

I usually like to hear the date and other information.

I have made sure my screen is maximized.

I also went into the folder view menu, and made sure my folder pane was set to normal, and my reading pane was set to off.

What step am I missing here?

I’m using Windows 10 version 1803, the latest build of Jaws 2019, and Outlook 2016 under Office 365.

Well, we'll have to disagree on this. The custom here is top posting, for the most part, leaving a trail of quotation multiple days deep afterward, which makes it insane when someone is trying to search the archive for original content.

If only the single message or message segment were included, I'd definitely say go for it, but that's not going to happen.

Anyone who's been following a topic through its lifespan is likely to know what's being replied to if it's an immediately previous message, anyway. I'd love to see people delete all content except that which is being retained for context, like my top quote of one line from your message or the interspersed reply method you mention. It's an easy matter when you hit the Reply button to do a CTRL+A followed by delete to remove all extraneous content not necessary for context preservation, but that's not going to happen, either.

Bring up the utilities menu for jaws and there should be a customize outlook list view option in there when you are running Outlook. Try playing with that or else turning off the custom list view in the Settings center.

Here is a good rule of thumb that I suggest people think about, which is still applied on a lot of web forums, and goes back to the days of more extensive e-mail list use and usenet newsgroups:
Top post, *except* when the message you are replying to contains a lot of detail that must be responded to individually.
If you can't be bothered to reply to individual paragraphs in a message, by inserting your remarks in the content of the re-posted original message, or, if as the case often is, there's really no need to do this (it happens most often, I find, in serious debates), always put your reply above the message you are replying to. *do* include that message you are replying to, though, so that we can all see it. Many of us don't store old messages from these lists for longer than a day.

That depends on which web interface you are using.
The only one I ever rarely use is the one provided by my ISP, and I only use that if I'm having a problem with my eMail client.
But they are all as different as all web pages tend to be.
But on the one I use, the reply is not a button, and it is not near the body of the message, so for me, it's easiest if I do control + F and type in the word reply and press enter to get to it.

Hello, everyone.

I don’t know if this has been caused by a recent Office 365 update, but my message list view in Outlook no longer displays complete header info about e-mails as I arrow up and down the list.

I can get the time of the message, and the subject, but that’s it.

I usually like to hear the date and other information.

I have made sure my screen is maximized.

I also went into the folder view menu, and made sure my folder pane was set to normal, and my reading pane was set to off.

What step am I missing here?

I’m using Windows 10 version 1803, the latest build of Jaws 2019, and Outlook 2016 under Office 365.
