Yeah I've heard about braille note users list, but I haven't heard about braille users list yet is that the one that you're referring to?

Hi.
I tried to subscribe to the braille user’s email list using the link someone gave. I got an undeliverable message. What do I do? I’d like to get on the list.
Thanks in advance.

Re: I have some questions concerning using a braille display with JAWS, specifically the Focus Blue 40 5th Gen, and want to know of other braille display lists out there.
David Csercsics
Yes, I have found scant information on braille as well, though I have a Brailliant BI 40 as I prefer to use braille rather than speech myself, but I mostly use it with NVDA and the braille Extender add-on as JAWS does braille differently, and I haven't worked out if it's better or not. The JAWS documentation for Freedom Scientific displays is good, but not so much for other manufacturers. I found that for Brailliant BI 40, there was an error where it said in HumanWare's documentation that you could press the combination space with the letter d on the brailliant's braille keyboard for delete, and it would delete. I found it didn't work out of the box, and when I checked JAWS keyboard manager, the "delete" script was not assigned to a key. So I fixed it. Not sure whose bug this is, but getting braille to work in JAWS with something other than a Freedom Scientific product is a few extra steps. I'll join that braille list as well, and see if we can get some extra information. I think this stuff is just not tested as well as speech, and that's a shame, because typically those of us who use braille prefer it. But maybe we could better document what works with what program and what doesn't.

HI.
Information about using braille displays seems thin on the ground, perhaps because it’s such a niche thing. I have recently come into possession of a Focus 40 (not 5th gen) and a Brailliant 80 braille display, and, like you, have only had quick ‘n’ dirty experience with using a braille display and JAWS /connected to PC until now, at least since the old Dos days. I have not found any tutorials to speak of, and not sure you’ll have any better luck, but if you do, I’d be a little curious to see what others have to say. Best you can probably do is ask questions, like you are doing now, and see what others say. What I have found is that braille + PC is a unique experience that is going to be tailored to individual user preferences. So, best thing you can probably do on your own is read all the documentation, and then experiment, and see what you like. While there doesn’t seem to be a ton of information out there, everything is very configurable. And the JAWS documentation is pretty easy to understand.
There is a braille display users list: Braille-displays-users+subscribe@groups.io There seem to be a lot of Focus users there.

Hi.
It’s me again. I’m finally getting the Focus 40 Blue 5th Generation display this coming week, and I have some very basic questions.
First, where can I get a refreshable braille display for dummies tutorial? I don’t think this necessarily deals with the Focus itself. I have used one over ten years ago, but I did very basic things with it, and I’d like to learn more advanced tricks for using one. I know JAWS has some documentation in the help topics, but I don’t know if that’s as simple as I need.
My second question concerns email lists for braille displays in general. Many of the questions I have are more Focus specific rather than JAWS, so I figure that there are other braille display lists out there that can give me good information. If there are web sites as well, I would like to learn about them. I know I can read the user’s manual, but I’m just wondering if there are some helpful hints that I could learn.
Those are my questions. I can’t wait until I get the Focus and pair it with my iPhone and PC and use it. I’m also looking forward to using it by itself to take notes and read books. I feel like a kid at Christmas, and I’ll just have to patiently wait for it to come.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Have a blessed day, and don’t work too hard. Kevin and Jilly

If you’re using JAWS, please press CTRL and d. This is after you’re in your document, and, to me, it’s the fastest way to get to your fonts. After pressing the hotkey, tab over until JAWS says size and down-arrow. Choose the size you want after the size menu is opened with the down-arrow. Note: JAWS won’t say anything when the menu is opened. However, it will probably speak the sizes. Also, if you’re using the latest version of JAWS 2019, you might not be able to easily check your font information with insert f on the fly. However, I hope this works for you. Ashleigh Piccinino

Not really. It usually stays at the level I set, but sometimes a restart of JAWS or a synthesiser switch will set it back to speaker level. Otherwise, though, the volume mixer settings generaly stay in tact.

I use Control D to open that Font attributes dialog. In addition, you can select text then do Control Shift period to increase font size and control shift comma to decrease the font size.

You can also use CTRL+Shift+F to bring up the full Font Dialog which includes pretty much any choice related to font you can think of. Once it's open ALT+S takes you straight to the size attribute. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1903, Build 18362 Many of the insights of the saint stem from his experience as a sinner. ~ Eric Hoffer
