Hello all,
I'm in panic mode. I have been out of my classroom for several weeks over the summer and went back yesterday to begin preparing for the upcoming semester. Windows 2007 and IE was what I was using, but upon booting up I discovered that all computers had been upgraded to Windows 2010 and Edge. While JAWS did come up, it did not start announcing things as usual, so I didn't know the log in screen was up, and after much tabbing and entering, eventually got logged in. When I tried opening a program that used the internet, I again could not get logged in because it wouldn't take my password. Usually I hear *****when typing in the password field, but only heard the exact keys I was typing. I couldn't get in anywhere other than my school email, which is now Outlook 2016 instead of 2013. Again, here all configurations are disturbed. I have no idea how to even begin getting my setup functional for me again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Marilyn

Yes, I am actually considering getting JAWS, I'm just trying to figure out what the best option is since I'm not in the US and they seem to be in some weird mode where they're changing their licenses, so I'm wondering what the most future proof option is as well as if it is worth the investment, which I think it may be given that I usually prefer braille, and their braille support is very good. Also I'm the sort that likes to tweak the hell out of things, so it may be worth the trouble for that as well, but I'm just exploring things right now. It's jut that the economics doesn't make sense at this point, because I'm not sure what's going on with their licenses, but I'm interested in testing to make sure that anyone who needs screen reading can get the functions they need. That's why I joined the list. I'd be happy to test betas because I have the time, and I'm not particularly loyal to any screen readers or brands in general, I'm just trying to figure out what works and what doesn't. But I'll contact Freedom Scientific and see what they can tell me.

I didn't realize the $90 subscription offer from Freedom Scientific wasn't good in Canada. It sounds like you could be using one of the free screen readers when not using Jaws, which to avoid list administrative ire, I won't mention. But for many things, yes, Jaws is still more powerful. Perhaps you could still write Eric Damery at FS to say that in demo mode of Jaws 2019 your desktop shortcuts don't work. As Maria pointed out, demo mode only works for 40 minutes and you have to reboot your system.

I'm just running it in demo mode, so maybe I shouldn't comment, as I doubt Freedom Scientific would like that kind of feedback. But 2 or 3 times now I have returned to my keyboard to find it unusable after the system had been idle for awhile. It also took out the braille display. Hi, I just saved your message as a txt file running Outlook from Office 365 with latest Jaws 2019 and Windows 10 64 home build 1903. The file name is Outlook and JFW freezes when saving message as text file.txt and it saved with no problems.

I have never used this feature but As far as I can tell it focus’s on any notification that appears whilst in another app
I think this may be on by default so this may be your issue or it may not

I suppose you could just turn off notifications Or turn off focus assist Or use windows+shift+V to read the notification Or set the affected program to be always on top if it has that option Im sure there are other ways of getting around this issue

Every time a Windows 10 notification appears that of course cannot be read, some programs' windows become unreadable. Winamp is one of these. Until the notification is cleared, Winamp is completely inaccessible. There are others, but they're not very common so I won't list them. Does anybody have any ideas, tips, tricks, suggestions, as to how to read these notifications and get rid of them? I had one yesterday for a Java run-time update, now today I have another one that I just can't find anywhere. Sometimes a Malwarebytes update will display one of these kinds of windows, too, so I looked into that. No updates pending. Sometimes regular old Windows Update does it; ditto, no updates pending today. I tried restarting Windows, and still no access. This is just maddening! And of course, JAWS says there's no window to OCR. Ditto NVDA, just in case you think to ask. Any ideas greatly appreciated.
