Hi,

Yes, smart navigation disabled. I know I used to go through links character by character and now not possible/able. This is a problem with all browsers just as the headache with indeed.com now not working... Where do I find the windows repair option? This will be my last option to attempt. No, previous jaws programs will surely be as troubled with recetnt/up-to-date browsers etc. Some sort of setting is causing this I just know it... But which one of hundreds is it? Yes, very frustrating with the problems and the quick get you off the phone statements by FS tech. What to do, what to do?

Thank you again...

Rick

FS told you that arrowing through a link by character is not possible?
They are mistaken as I and others do it all the time. Got to wonder about tech support sometimes. I have been using Jaws for 25 years and dont remember ever having a problem doing that. A link is just ASCII text with some markup.
I know you are frustrated but what is more important to you? being able to get the form filled out or trying to fight a temperamental PC? Jaws

Sorry Rick but I can and always have been able to arrow character by character through links.

Something is definitely wrong with your Jaws install. Did you do a repair or try jaws 17? To help any more we really need to do this for troubleshooting your issues.

Jaws 2018 was a major redesign of how jaws interacts with windows and browsers so sometimes 17 will work when newer versions wont. Although at this point it is most likely a corrupt jaws install.

Also, I could read links character by character by just using the numpad keys. However, I just checked and I was able to read a link character by character by using the regular cursor keys.

It seems like you might have this problem if you are using Smart Navigation mode which I am not using. You can see a description of Smart Navigation and how to read links using it in the JAWS help.

Hi, Rick. You might want to use JAWS key plus six on the numbers row, do a search for Smart Navigation, and make sure this is off.

A possible workaround, and that's all it is, would be doing a copy of the link and pasting it in to Notepad, or a similar text editor, where it is not automatically "linkified."

URLs are treated like any other string of characters in a text editor.

I have been using indeed.com for years and my skills on the site and with jaws are not the issue! As I have told you in past entries, indeed.com worked flawlessly up to a few weeks ago. Having done nothing to this pc to cause an issue, it is not something that may have corrupted jaws as the failed repair proved today. If you do not have the answer, your personal jabs at one's ability to use a site, an application etc. is unwanted and surely uncalled for!

So, two things... First, The virtual cursor is toggled off and on wit the insert+Z command. Second, using the virtual cursor is a more basic function of Jaws. While I believe you're having problems with the site, I might also be inclined to believe that this could also be an issue of lack of familiarity by the screen reader user as it seems the vast majority of people who've responded to this thread with all sorts of configurations and set ups are more or less able to get around indeed.com just fine.
Another question, do you by any chance have a separate machine you can access indeed.com from with a screen reader? Even NVDA or Narrator if you're running the most current Windows 10?

Hi,

It matters because I have this issue with firefox also, and I don't with chrome. Try chrome, with a clean reset. If that doesn't work, try an older version of jaws. If you want, you could also try using indeed.co.uk, obviously it won't work for jobs in your town however these three steps will give you a good idea of whether it's the web browser, the screen reader or the website that is the problem.

1. Reset chrome to factory defaults, and try and use indeed.com.
2. Install an older version of jaws onto your computer, use the reset version of chrome and try to access indeed.com.
3. Try to access a non-US version of indeed (indeed.co.uk for example) with the older jaws and the reset chrome. This will tell you where the problem lies.

Jaws 2018 was a major redesign of how jaws interacts with windows and browsers so sometimes 17 will work when newer versions wont. Although at this point it is most likely a corrupt jaws install.

It seems like you might have this problem if you are using Smart Navigation mode which I am not using. You can see a description of Smart Navigation and how to read links using it in the JAWS help.

The Touch cursor is activated by pressing shift and the plus key on the

To turn off virtual cursor press insert + Z. Older versions of jaws are on the download page under a link called previous versions of jaws.

Also, given the feedback that has occurred in this topic, the issues you are experiencing, and one or two others have, too, are far from universal.

Most issues that are not universal, or very nearly so, are the result of something idiosyncratic to the computer on which they are occurring.  This is just a fact of tech world life.

I am not clear as to what version of Windows you are running, but if Windows 10, consider:  Doing a Windows 10 Repair Install or Feature Update Using the Windows 10 ISO file

You should best be able to determine that.   Surely you must have an opinion as to where the root of the problem lies.   Pursue the issue with the entity or entities where it appears fixes need to be made.  If that involves more than one entity, then pursue all of them, making sure that the information you include reflects that you think that there is an interaction issue between thing X and thing Y and that all entities involved have this information in the report(s) you make.  That gives all sides the information they need to go after a fix, if they so choose.

What happens after that is utterly beyond your control.

the fields to enter information and then to upload my resume etc.?? the
arrow keys mentioned did nothing by hitting right or left arrow key...

Thanks,

Rick

If the PC and Jaws cursors fail this is the new cursor to try and keep
up with the current tech.

The Touch cursor is activated by pressing shift and the plus key on the
numpad at the same time. This cursor is required more and more. Now use
the left and right arrow keys to navigate like swiping left and right on
a IPhone. use space bar or enter to activate items. On 7/22/2019 1:06 PM,

Hi,

This is a problem with all browsers. Using the touch cursor? Perhaps my
definition of the jaws or pc cursor is and has been used. Failed with
both. If touch cursor is different, I've truly never heard of this,
please explain.

Have you tried the touch cursor? Or other browsers and yes even IE 11?

Hi all,

From time to time, I jump on indeed.com and apply to jobs here
and there.

I went to apply for a job and clicked on the apply button, no problem
at this point. Now, when the page opened that had you put your name,
email, phone number, attach your resume and copy/paste a cover
letter... this page is not working where jaws reads it. I only am
hearing the page I am on and arrowing or tabbing does nothing to move
to these points as mentioned. Even hitting the letter e to go to an
edit field is not working.

Any help surely appreciated.

Using Jaws 2019 latest update
Windows 10 all up to date
this happens on firefox, internet explorer and google crome...

This was not a problem the last time I was on this site, before the
last update, July 2019, I believe last update...

I look forward to your help, ideas etc...

Rick

I was with tech support and they did a jaws repair. No need for a windows repair. This is an indeed.com/jaws issue only...

What type of repair did you perform? Windows repair? JAWS repair?

And as another aid in the situation, I've ben hearing talk of AIRA offering free service for job seekers. I'm really not sure of the stipulations around that, but it's in the works according to a number of podcasts I've listened to and newsletters from AIRA.

Sorry No more ideas. Did you try Jaws 17? At least that is just a 10 minute install/setup.

Only losing outlook and having to reinstall and import saved email messages etc. But indeed.com was working afterwards. This simply started in the past couple weeks... yes, totally frustrating.... I'll check through jaws settings just to see if anything there may be out of wack. Any pointers on settings appreciated. I can go to yahoo.com, finance.yahoo.com, google.com and the sites work properly... indeed.com works until I hit the apply button for any specific job... no freaking idea...

Any new add-ons, drivers, updates or software since it last worked?
Like I said it only takes one error to screw something up.

No guarantee that the touch cursor will work. as for navigating with the touch cursor you need to use the 4 pack of arrows not the number pad arrows. You should hear a tone with each key press if there isn't anything under the cursor and a description if there is something there.
