moderated Some braille questions

David Csercsics

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, and I don't intend to start a flame war or anything of the sort, but I have a couple questions. I have a Brailliant BI 40, and I prefer to use braille for everything. The main thing I'm having trouble with finding out is the state of Jaws refreshable braille support. I'm currently using NVDA with the braille extender add-on, and it seems to do quite a lot. Jaws braille support looks quite good, but I wonder which things it does differently or possibly better than my current setup. I read quite a lot of different things, some of which are quite technical, i.e. math, logic, computer science, philosophy and that sort of thing, so I was wondering if a Jaws subscription would be  worth the trouble, or not. The difference isn't obvious just playing with it. Yes, a lot has to do with personal preference but I was just wondering if I'd missed something. I've always heard that Jaws had the best braille support of any of the screen readers and I've decided to look at it and see what's up. Also, for those that use braille a lot, do you find it helpful to have an extra display to carry around? The BI 40 seems to be reasonably compact for a 40-cell display and seems to work well, but sometimes I do a lot of traveling, and wondered if a smaller display would be worth the trouble. I have large hands though and I like the 40 cell displays a lot: I find it's a good size. But again, was there something I didn't consider? I have an iphone 8 plus, which I quite like for reading books when I'm out, but do these newer smaller displays have anything I'd care about, or would I just end up wearing out the panning buttons and my hands? Thank you for reading this.

Yes, firefox has indeed become a bit slow, and the same for thunderbird, but the trouble is that I don't really want to use google chrome because it seems less customizable than firefox and doesn't have reader mode, and I'm not sure about privacy, so I may just have to try edge. I'd like to make sure that only the people tracking me are ones that I have asked to track, but I'm not sure chrome lets you do that. And I haven't really found a good mail client either. I suppose I could use the Windows one, but it seems to have a slimmer interface, and I have a lot of thunderbird customizations, so I'm still sticking with firefox for historical reasons. I suspect a lot of others have noticed similar.

Hi Richard,

To my knowledge, you can't. I wind up restarting my browser, Jaws or both to get it working again.

I am using JAWS 2019, Windows 7 and Firefox - all updated.  When I am working in Wordpress (latest version, 5.2.2), After awhile links stop working.  What I mean is, for example, in the admin menu (e.g., “Add New” (Plugin)), after I have been successfully clicking on (i.e., pressing “Enter”)various other links the links stop working.  In this example, after awhile if I came to the “Add New” admin menu link and pressed “Enter” on it  - it does not activate.  Strangely, I do not ever seem to have this problem with the “Logout” link on the admin page.  It never stops working.

Does anyone else have this issue?  How can I fix it?

Thanks,

Richard

You can go to the properties of the Chrome icon and choose to start maximized and then it will always open maximized.

Be sure the window is maximized (Hit Windows and Up arrow) to do this.

Hi David

With the latest JAWS, try creating a new settings centre file for CCleaner then set MSA mode to advanced. This works for me. I'm able to check and uncheck buttons.

I'm writing to see if anyonehas had success using jaws versions 16 to 2019 with ccleaner and what were the results. I'm currently trying to use c cleaner with jaws version 16 but the problem is nothing seems to happen when I press enter on any of the buttons. I'd also like to label these buttons. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I should proceed. The version of jaws i'm using is 16.

I am using JAWS 2019 with Windows 7.  Sometimes, I come upon a link that says “link, has pop-up.”  How do you activate the pop-up to get at the pop-up?

Thanks,

Amazon.com/access, Googled; should be first in search results—the one that says, “online shopping for electronics...” etc. Again, it’s not nearly as uncluttered as I’d like, but some is better than none. Next time I’m there, I should put it in my i.e. favorites—in all these years, I haven’t—don’t know why.

Ann,

If you encounter this problem again one thing that may help is to tab away from the edit box and then press shift-tab to move back to the edit box. Usually, this allows JAWS to properly read the text contained within the edit field.

At one point there was an issue with the iOS app where when Voiceover was enabled one couldn’t continue beyond the address selection, but I think that was fixed a while back. The fact is that I rarely use the app, doing it on the PC with Jaws is super accessible and if you remember you address and payment selection or have only one address and one payment card entered it’s basically a matter of activating a couple of buttons and maybe to select the shipping method before you get to the “Place Order” button.

I have used Amazon.com (or, more recently, smile.amazon.com if one wishes to have some tiny portion of one's purchase dollars go to the charity of one's choosing) as a site when I'm training folks to use JAWS for a very long time now.

It was, at least through last fall, very accessible, and if memory serves once one does a product search the individual products returned are all structured as headings, so it's easy to use the headings list feature of JAWS to cruise through those quickly and easily (or use the quick navigation key for headings).

I’ve had an Amazon account for almost a year now and for the most part have had no, to little problems.  I did get a blind person to help me set it up, mainly because he’d had an account for years. Now, they do have a help desk in Canada and the U AS that will help you with any problems. One I had was getting a prime membership.  Amazon.com did not recognize my amazon.ca account.  The number for help from amazon is on their website. My only advice is call them during the day as they have a lot of people working out of their home.  Thus, when I called at 10 PM PST, I got a woman with the TV and her kids in the background that could be clearly heard running around. Which brings up another matter, if working out of your home have no background noise as it could discredit your product. Even at some work places, it sounded like there was a party going on.
