Yes, press the Windows key then type “cmd” without the quotes.

 

Down arrow to CMD, Desktop App, then press your applications key then down arrow to Run As Administrator and press enter.

 

Now run CHKDSK from the command prompt and you will be able to do it.

I have been using Jaws 2019 exclusively ever since it came out and have no major issues and certainly at this point in the game I would say it works as good as Jaws 2018 ever has except it of course has new features like Photo Smart which I find extremely useful, same goes for the new ways to deal with headings on web pages where you can set it so that if you go to a heading level 3, for example, it goes straight there even if that heading level 3 is in an area of the page where previously you might have to first use heading level 1 and 2 to find it.

The new Jaws online installer has worked perfectly for me each time, it’s a small download and when  you run it Jaws downloads whatever components it needs during the installation, but you can still download a 32 bit or 64 bit off-line installer which includes everything for a completely offline installation.

I find that with changes in Windows and Office happening quite frequently it definitely is worthwhile to be on the latest Jaws update because it will also contain all the latest fixes to address things Microsoft does. And, as you know, you don’t have to uninstall Jaws 2018 in order to install and use Jaws 2019 so there is no risk really to install and use it and, should something really not work, you can go back to Jaws 2018 and see if it works better.

If you have major issues with Jaws 2019 and continue to experience them I would say you need to take a good look at your PC overall to make sure there isn’t anything which might cause said issues.

I would open an admin command prompt and run the typical repair tools like chkdsk c: /r and system file checker, sfc /ScanNow to make sure you don’t get any errors and, if you still have problems try a non-destructive repair of Windows 10.

Also, I don’t think you mentioned it, but which version of Windows 10 do you have and what are the basic specs of your PC, e.g. I3, I5 or I7, which generation is your processor, how much RAM do you have and do you have a traditional hard drive or do you use an SSD?

I dislike JAWS 2019 too right now.  When I press the Windows key JAWS doesn’t speak.  I type in a search & it will open & then it talks.  If I open 2 or more items at first JAWS works but then freezes & won’t talk at all.  I’ve uninstalled 2019   & reinstalled & get the same thing.  I haven’t gotten very far with tech support.  I’ve written an email through their contact page & they tell me to call tech support.  I’ve gone back to using JAWS 2018.  It seems like every time they update something stops working & it either doesn’t get fixed or it takes many complaints to fix it.  I know a lot of people don’t have problems & really like the new changes but this version makes me very mad.

Hi all! I currently have JAWS 2018 installed on my computer alongside JAWS 2019. I have tried JAWS 2019 3 or 4 times. So far, I'm not impressed! Each time I tried JAWS 2019, I have run into bugs. The last time that I tried it, the update was a bad corrupted version. It wouldn't work with my Dell laptop PC computer at all. My tech teacher also got the same exact result. Because JAWS 2019 is one of the worst worst versions of softwhere that I have run into, into, I want to know the latest news from the user’s point of view. I don’t need someone sending me Freedom Scientific resources because they have overlooked some major bugs. I want feedback from users experiences before I give that vertion of JAWS another try. I have stuck with NVDA and JAWS 2018 instead.

Yes, they would. After all, if you are using a demo, you may buy it in the future, so they'd want to fix any installation issues.

My own thought is that your video driver needs updating.

each time the installer shows this error message:

I tried Jaws 2019 April, May, and June release and encountered this error.
the other thing is that in the same system, Jaws 18 and older versions
installs well.
Also, I should say that I tried installing Jaws 2019 on my another
Windows 7 32 bit machine, and it installed without problem.

Hi Bill.

 

I’d really enjoy getting an ElBraille, but unless there’s something I don’t know, my guess is this will be much more expensive than just a Focus 40 Blue 5th gen, so that’s why I’m just getting the display and I’ll use it with my Laptop.  Even this solution is better for me, because the display is smaller than my wireless full size desktop keyboard.  Perhaps some day I will be able to get it, but I’m right now going to have to pay off a loan that will cover a good bit of the cost for it, but I’ll have to save a bit to cover the rest.

 

Thanks for the idea.  Maybe some day I can get the ElBraille and run all my software that I currently use on it.

That way one need not go through all the set up and blue tooth connection procedures some have discussed here. i’ve been following it for some time now and have recently learned it’ll be upgraded in July.

 This will include a shift from the Focus 40 blue generation 4 to the newer generation five display. Furthermore, it will include a larger processor, from 32 to 64 bit. The ElBraille 14 and 40 are sold through a partnership with Elita group  under the Freedom Scientific umbrella.  So if you have a pre-existing JAWS license, then you can download a copy of it to the ElBraille instead of needing to buy a full package. Likewise, if you already have a focus 40 display, generation four or five, you can send it in to have it coupled with the processor portion. The downside is this makes it a solid-state device. Thusly, if you wish to use The display with a laptop or computer, then I assume the entire device must be used to do so. I’m looking forward to getting one myself and then  using it in my literary Braille transcribing. As I said earlier, for what it’s worth, I hope this will be of help.

Now for my first question, and it has to do with translating a text file into contracted braille.  Is there a good, inexpensive translator that works with Windows to do this?  I have a .txt file that I want to work with on the Focus scratchpad, and if I just had it as a text file, when I opened it, it would be in computer braille.  I’d like it translated to grade 2 braille so I can transfer it to the scratchpad to work with it.  Any suggestions out there are appreciated on this one.  The translator doesn’t have to be really fancy, doing things such as math or other languages, or even UEB.  I just want good old grade 2 braille.  Come to think of it, a grade 3 translator would be fun to have, and I would like to learn that form of braille just to know it.  That way I could have stuff that hardly anyone else would understand, so any grade 3 tutorials or translators would be fun.

 

My next general question concerning the Focus concerns transferring files to it.  I know you can export from the scratchpad to a file in Windows, but can you go the other way?  Let’s say I get my nice file translated to grade 2 on Windows, and I want to work with it on the Focus.  Can I do it, and if so, how do I do it?

 

I do have a final question, and that’s simply, where can I learn more about refreshable braille displays, and using them in general, and specifically the Focus 40 Blue 5th Gen.  I want to learn how to use it completely.  Another thing I want to do is to pair it with my iPhone X so I can control my iPhone with it.  Where do I learn to do this?

 

That’s it from me.  I’m so glad I happened to think of this group for most of my questions, and I figure people will steer me to Focus email lists, web sites, and other good resources.  I’m one of those who wants to learn as much as I can before I get new technology, so I can be that farther ahead.  I know, however, that you can do only so much without actually having something to work with, and I figure the Focus is such a device.  I do understand panning buttons, and I have seen cursor routing buttons, but I’m not as familiar with these.  Other things like select buttons, the menu button and navigator buttons really don’t make sense to me, and oh yeah, there are those SHIFT buttons that are used with the keyboard to do some JAWS stuff.  I don’t understand a lot of this stuff, but I will when I get my Focus.  I just wish I could find someone who could help me learn, but I don’t have that, so I’ll have to go it alone.  That’s part of the fun, though.  I know a lot about the Echo and Alexa, for instance, because I did find a great tutorial for it, and I just tinkered around myself to see what would happen, and now if someone has some questions about Lady A, I can tell what I know in simple terms.  I want to do that with the Focus, so others can ask questions on the proper lists, and I can help.

And if your WiFi/Bluetooth card (they're often in combination these days) is from Intel, regardless of your computer's OEM, Intel has been churning out driver updates specifically for Windows 10 at an incredible rate of speed.  I installed the Intel Driver & Support Assistant to keep that specific driver up to date, as they have not been supplying these to the computer OEMs (or at least not yet, and they keep updating the driver).

I'd be looking for a bluetooth driver update.  This will likely involve finding something from your computer manufacturer if it came with bluetooth.

Running JAWS 19, now have a problem with my Bluetooth.
When I have connected my Bluetooth speaker or headphones, after a bit the computer becomes sluggish when I am using the keyboard.
Has any one had the same problem?
If so, what did you do to fix it?

Hello.


I can help with some of this.  I've not bothered to install my Focus with bluetooth on my computer, seems kinda pointless so far.  To know if your laptop has bluetooth, there are several things you can do.  One of the easiest is to hit windows plus r and type in devmgmt.msc and press enter.

Hit tab once and arrow down.  If you have bluetooth, there will be a section in device manager that says "bluetooth".


Now, as far as the com port, that is for bluetooth.  I never needed that when installing my braille display via usb, I think all I did is plug it in with jaws running and I went and selected it in the braille section of jaws options.  I think that was all there was to it.

Now for my JAWS questions.  I’m using the most current update of JAWS 2019, so I know it supports the Focus.  I think I understand how to get JAWS to connect with both USB as well as blue tooth, but is there an order to do it so both will work?  Also, just how do use this thing with JAWS and Windows.  I know that the Blue will let you control a PC using its keyboard, and I pretty well can figure out things like hitting JAWS and another key to do something, but I’m not sure about working in Windows itself.  My main questions have to deal with working with Windows Explorer and files.  First, how do you cut, copy and paste files?  Next, I have Windows displaying in a list view with certain details of files that I’d like to check.  This brings up two questions concerning this.  First, how do you do a right arrow to move to something in the details you want to read.  For example, I have a lot of music that I’m organizing, and I organize songs by year.  In the details, I have the year of the file, and next is how long it is.  How can I check this information.  Also, with speech, when I check out these fields, JAWS will tell me the position in the list they are, for example, the file is 100 out of 379.  Does the Focus display this as well, and is there a command I need to issue to hear it?

 

My final Windows Explorer question concerns moving through a list.  When I tried to use a braille display way back when, I would have liked it to navigate through the entire whatever, and not just what was on the screen.  How do you simulate pressing the arrow keys on a regular keyboard so that focus is moved to the next or previous item?  This doesn’t just apply to Windows Explorer, but other programs such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.  I know the Focus keyboard can do this, but I don’t know how, and I’ve read the Braille In help, and most of it makes sense, but some of it doesn’t.  Can anybody tell me what to do, or give me a comprehensive tutorial concerning this?

Now for my first question, and it has to do with translating a text file into contracted braille.  Is there a good, inexpensive translator that works with Windows to do this?  I have a .txt file that I want to work with on the Focus scratchpad, and if I just had it as a text file, when I opened it, it would be in computer braille.  I’d like it translated to grade 2 braille so I can transfer it to the scratchpad to work with it.  Any suggestions out there are appreciated on this one.  The translator doesn’t have to be really fancy, doing things such as math or other languages, or even UEB.  I just want good old grade 2 braille.  Come to think of it, a grade 3 translator would be fun to have, and I would like to learn that form of braille just to know it.  That way I could have stuff that hardly anyone else would understand, so any grade 3 tutorials or translators would be fun.

 

My next general question concerning the Focus concerns transferring files to it.  I know you can export from the scratchpad to a file in Windows, but can you go the other way?  Let’s say I get my nice file translated to grade 2 on Windows, and I want to work with it on the Focus.  Can I do it, and if so, how do I do it?

I tried Jaws 2019 April, May, and June release and encountered this error.
the other thing is that in the same system, Jaws 18 and older versions
installs well.

Hello. I'm running JAWS 2019 using Windows 10 build 1803 on a Dell Lattitude 2-in-1 device with a touch screen, along with a detachable keyboard.

I have been asked to deliver a demo regarding the touch screen gestures used by JAWS. As I make my way through the relevant help topic in the JAWS help system I am having little difficulty with most of the gestures, except for one. I am not able to invoke the on-screen keyboard using the four finger swipe down/up gesture. At first I had wondered if the on-screen keyboard would not be available if the physical keyboard was attached. However, even after removing the keyboard the gesture still doesn't work. I have so far tried doing this in Word 365 and in Wordpad. What's the secret to accessing the on-screen keyboard? Should it not work in Word and in Wordpad? I welcome any feedback from any users who have experience with this.

To be honest, I cannot say, but that is far from the only reason to upgrade.   Screen reader developers are not attempting to maintain perpetual backward compatibility with every version of MS Office that ever existed.  Resources have to be directed to those versions that have the largest embedded base among Windows users, and 2010 is well past its prime and is a small part of the Office market.

I have purchased all of my MS-Office and Windows 10 Pro licenses via eBay.  There are other marketplaces as well, but eBay has done an excellent job in keeping out those who are intent on ripping people off.  The have had issues two times, once I was promptly provided with a second license key which worked perfectly and the other I was promptly issued a refund.

Ok, I didn’t realize that newer versions of Office were so inexpensive these days. I thought that you had to have a monthly subscription to these newer versions and that seamed silly when I don’t need a lot of the bells and wistles.

Some of the new stuff is just more, and not all that.

 

Where would I go to look for the newer versions. Do you really think that a newer version of the email client would be able to get to these embedded graphics?

I did find a setting in Jaws 2019 that does at least acknowledge that there is a graphic and it says it is in the local temp bla bla bla but I can’t seam to grab it, or coppy or save it at all.

The attachments save in office 2010 does not  scoup this sort of thing up in the save options.

I am using Jaws 2019 because I had to. I honestly am not as happy with it as I was with Window Eyes. IMO WE was a better product but… since it is gone I had to do something.

I am using windows 10 not because it is better but like you said it is what is being supported now. I think it is full of fluffy stuff but… mostly it works fine. Sometimes they just seam to change stuff for the sake of changing something, not to make it actually better but to make it different.

Yes, but there comes a time when software which is way past any update and support period simply will cause too many headaches, it will become insecure and you will ask questions about some issue which others have a hard time answering because you are using software which most others left behind 5 or 6 years ago.

I have multiple computers at work and my laptop at home as well as my iPhone and I use Outlook.com for my personal email. I stopped using Office 2010 as soon as Office 2013 offered native support for Exchange Active Sync accounts without me having to install the old Hotmail connector program first.

If it turns out that the Save attachments feature does not exist in Office 2010 and that Shannon could access all or even most embedded images and files using it if she used Office 365 and, as she said, she is missing important information by not being able to access them then I would say the statement “Why buy a new one when mostly this does the job?” is not such a good one because apparently it does not do an important part of her job. Keep in mind that I am just hypothesizing because I haven’t seen her emails with these embedded images, for all I know they are also not accessible in Outlook through Office 365. But in general my statement stands, at some point you have to move on and get away from older software. Shannon says she is using Jaws 2019 and I’m not sure if she is on Windows 10 or still on Windows 7, but the statement she made could also be applied to Windows and Jaws, I mean, if she is using Office 2010, why not use Windows 10 with Jaws 13 or even earlier, imaging all the money you could have saved not upgrading Jaws. Of course the same applies, eventually you have to get a new computer which nowadays means you get a Windows 10 computer and especially with version 1903 and what is coming this fall and next spring you really need Jaws 2019.

Is there a specific reason why you still use Outlook 2010? Usually I still hear that the email includes attachments if it has embedded images, maybe it’s not always the case, but when it does tell me I can save them with File > Save attachments.

Keep in mind that I use the most current version of Outlook via Office 365 and it’s been so many years since I have used Office 2010 that I have no idea if Save Attachments which saves all attachments whether attached or embedded exists in 2010.

Hello,

 

It has come to my attention that I am missing important   information in emails because they are actually including this information in an image format imbedded into the email body.

With Jaws 2019 and Outlook 2010 I am getting no indication that there are any images at all.

Is there at the least a setting that I can/need to change to be notified that there is more in these messages beyond the body text and the typical signature junk?

Once I find these images, is there a way to get to them and save them so I can possibly use OCR on them?

Hi.

 

I’m not sure when, but in a couple of weeks to a month or so I will be getting a brand new Focus 40 Blue 5th Generation, and I have questions concerning it.  Since this is a JAWS list, I’ll keep most of them to using it with JAWS.  I have used a Focus 40 before, but it was one that used USB to hook up to the PC, and that was over ten years ago, and this technology has sure changed.  So, here are my questions.

 

The first one is a general Windows question, but it is JAWS related, because The first thing I need to do is to get the Focus and the computer to communicate with each other, and then I’ll add JAWS to the mix.  The first is how should you set up connections for the Focus to work.  I want it to work with both USB as well as blue tooth, so is there a particular order to do these?  I have read the User’s manual, and I’m not sure what to do.  I’m pretty good at plug and play, but the documentation mentions to refer to the device manager in Windows and see what COM port the Focus is using.  Does that concern USB or blue tooth?  Also, I know that you can connect with blue tooth before setting up USB, but is it better to do it the other way?  Finally, how do I find out if my laptop has blue tooth on it in the first place?  I think I’ve seen it in a list or so, but I can’t find where to see if it is available or not.  If it is, but it somehow got turned off, how do I get it working again?  This is Windows 10 1803, and I’m not real familiar with network settings other than connecting to internet, so guidance would be appreciated.

 

Now for my JAWS questions.  I’m using the most current update of JAWS 2019, so I know it supports the Focus.  I think I understand how to get JAWS to connect with both USB as well as blue tooth, but is there an order to do it so both will work?  Also, just how do use this thing with JAWS and Windows.  I know that the Blue will let you control a PC using its keyboard, and I pretty well can figure out things like hitting JAWS and another key to do something, but I’m not sure about working in Windows itself.  My main questions have to deal with working with Windows Explorer and files.  First, how do you cut, copy and paste files?  Next, I have Windows displaying in a list view with certain details of files that I’d like to check.  This brings up two questions concerning this.  First, how do you do a right arrow to move to something in the details you want to read.  For example, I have a lot of music that I’m organizing, and I organize songs by year.  In the details, I have the year of the file, and next is how long it is.  How can I check this information.  Also, with speech, when I check out these fields, JAWS will tell me the position in the list they are, for example, the file is 100 out of 379.  Does the Focus display this as well, and is there a command I need to issue to hear it?

 

My final Windows Explorer question concerns moving through a list.  When I tried to use a braille display way back when, I would have liked it to navigate through the entire whatever, and not just what was on the screen.  How do you simulate pressing the arrow keys on a regular keyboard so that focus is moved to the next or previous item?  This doesn’t just apply to Windows Explorer, but other programs such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.  I know the Focus keyboard can do this, but I don’t know how, and I’ve read the Braille In help, and most of it makes sense, but some of it doesn’t.  Can anybody tell me what to do, or give me a comprehensive tutorial concerning this?

 

That’s pretty much all I can think of concerning the Focus Blue and JAWS.  I do have a question about something that you can get to work with Windows itself, as well as some other questions regarding the Focus 40 Blue itself.  I don’t know where else to ask right now, but since the same company makes both, I figure here’s a good place to ask.  If this would be considered as off topic, or clutter on the list, either let me know of a better group to join, or send your answers directly to me.  Let me put my email address here before I ask my questions.  My email address is

Now for my first question, and it has to do with translating a text file into contracted braille.  Is there a good, inexpensive translator that works with Windows to do this?  I have a .txt file that I want to work with on the Focus scratchpad, and if I just had it as a text file, when I opened it, it would be in computer braille.  I’d like it translated to grade 2 braille so I can transfer it to the scratchpad to work with it.  Any suggestions out there are appreciated on this one.  The translator doesn’t have to be really fancy, doing things such as math or other languages, or even UEB.  I just want good old grade 2 braille.  Come to think of it, a grade 3 translator would be fun to have, and I would like to learn that form of braille just to know it.  That way I could have stuff that hardly anyone else would understand, so any grade 3 tutorials or translators would be fun.

 

My next general question concerning the Focus concerns transferring files to it.  I know you can export from the scratchpad to a file in Windows, but can you go the other way?  Let’s say I get my nice file translated to grade 2 on Windows, and I want to work with it on the Focus.  Can I do it, and if so, how do I do it?

 

I do have a final question, and that’s simply, where can I learn more about refreshable braille displays, and using them in general, and specifically the Focus 40 Blue 5th Gen.  I want to learn how to use it completely.  Another thing I want to do is to pair it with my iPhone X so I can control my iPhone with it.  Where do I learn to do this?

 

That’s it from me.  I’m so glad I happened to think of this group for most of my questions, and I figure people will steer me to Focus email lists, web sites, and other good resources.  I’m one of those who wants to learn as much as I can before I get new technology, so I can be that farther ahead.  I know, however, that you can do only so much without actually having something to work with, and I figure the Focus is such a device.  I do understand panning buttons, and I have seen cursor routing buttons, but I’m not as familiar with these.  Other things like select buttons, the menu button and navigator buttons really don’t make sense to me, and oh yeah, there are those SHIFT buttons that are used with the keyboard to do some JAWS stuff.  I don’t understand a lot of this stuff, but I will when I get my Focus.  I just wish I could find someone who could help me learn, but I don’t have that, so I’ll have to go it alone.  That’s part of the fun, though.  I know a lot about the Echo and Alexa, for instance, because I did find a great tutorial for it, and I just tinkered around myself to see what would happen, and now if someone has some questions about Lady A, I can tell what I know in simple terms.  I want to do that with the Focus, so others can ask questions on the proper lists, and I can help.

Not to mention they'd be killing the goose that has assisted in incubating the golden eggs.  I cannot foresee a time when desktop apps (formerly called installed programs) supplied by third-party makers will not be a huge part of the Windows 10 ecosystem.

Mind you, some of those makers are transitioning toward UWP apps distributed through the store, but those are mostly in addition to, not in replacement of, the installed type.

I have often said of Apple that they make great products, if overpriced, but I couldn't ever "go there" permanently because I refused to become one with the Apple borg.  There is but one way, the Apple way, and the ecosystems for every one of the operating systems they make are far more tightly controlled than I'm willing to accept.  Different strokes for different folks.

If Windows went the way of only allowing apps to be installed from the app store, I am pretty sure many of us would stop using Windows. I think the reason a lot of us like Windows is that it’s not so proprietary, notso completely controlled by Microsoft that your experience begins and ends with them.

 

That said, there is a special version of Windows designed for educational purposes that I think only allows programmes from the store to be installed. And even my own Windows tried to point me more in that direction before I changed things. Now I can just install anything I like, from anywhere; that’s the way I want my computer to behave. *grins*

Thanks for explaining. I asked about getting apps becaus eon Mac, if something isn’t in the app store, it’s a pain to install. I know with Windows 8 it was very easy to install programs you got off the Internet, but I wasn’t sure this still works in Windows 10.

The Windows app store seems quite accessible, but really, I do not use it for much. I can say though that you can successfully find and install apps from this place if you want to.

Where do we get our apps? That depends on what they are. I generally try to go to the source on the internet for whatever programme I am interested in.

I have some questions. I need to make the choice between a Mac with VoiceOve ror a PC with Windows 10 and JAWS. Background: hav eused PCs with JAWS ever since 2002, but had been waiting for approval from my health insurance to get a new JAWS version ever since late 2017. In the meantime, last January, I bought a Mac, which I can’t get used to. Long story short, I was finally approved for JAWS and now my husband is willing to get me a Windows PC and to take over my Mac. Keeping both the Mac and PC is not an option for practical reasons.

 

As the purchase of the Mac was quite a desperate action and I don’t want to repeat it, I want to get opinions from people as to how useable JAWS is these days? Is there a browser that works well? I cannot get used to the way Safari works on the Mac, but I don’t want to have to have three different browsers on my PC like I did with my last Windows PC and way old JAWS. What about Windows Mail? Is the Windows app store accessible nowadays, and if not, where do you get your apps?

 

Is there a way to keep files synchronized between PC and iPhone? I like my iPhone and really use it ll the time.

 

What feed reader(s) is/are accessible with JAWS? Is Kindle for PC still accessible (Kindle for Mac isn’t)? Just some random questions. Will ask more if I think of any.

I don’t believe the op was asking about the facebook app; in any case, this is a JAWS list and I think posts about the app are probably considered too off-topic. I myself don’t use the app; it seems bloated and I don’t really want that stuff on my phone.

 

As to sending out e-mail notifications, your friends are in control of that, not you. Basically they can set whether they want to receive notifications by e-mail or not. Not much you can do on your end, and that’s probably as it should be, or else everybody would be getting loads of crap in their inboxes that they don’t really want.

I have been using Jaws 2019 exclusively ever since it came out and have no major issues and certainly at this point in the game I would say it works as good as Jaws 2018 ever has except it of course has new features like Photo Smart which I find extremely useful, same goes for the new ways to deal with headings on web pages where you can set it so that if you go to a heading level 3, for example, it goes straight there even if that heading level 3 is in an area of the page where previously you might have to first use heading level 1 and 2 to find it.

The new Jaws online installer has worked perfectly for me each time, it’s a small download and when  you run it Jaws downloads whatever components it needs during the installation, but you can still download a 32 bit or 64 bit off-line installer which includes everything for a completely offline installation.

I find that with changes in Windows and Office happening quite frequently it definitely is worthwhile to be on the latest Jaws update because it will also contain all the latest fixes to address things Microsoft does. And, as you know, you don’t have to uninstall Jaws 2018 in order to install and use Jaws 2019 so there is no risk really to install and use it and, should something really not work, you can go back to Jaws 2018 and see if it works better.

If you have major issues with Jaws 2019 and continue to experience them I would say you need to take a good look at your PC overall to make sure there isn’t anything which might cause said issues.

I would open an admin command prompt and run the typical repair tools like chkdsk c: /r and system file checker, sfc /ScanNow to make sure you don’t get any errors and, if you still have problems try a non-destructive repair of Windows 10.

Also, I don’t think you mentioned it, but which version of Windows 10 do you have and what are the basic specs of your PC, e.g. I3, I5 or I7, which generation is your processor, how much RAM do you have and do you have a traditional hard drive or do you use an SSD?

I dislike JAWS 2019 too right now.  When I press the Windows key JAWS doesn’t speak.  I type in a search & it will open & then it talks.  If I open 2 or more items at first JAWS works but then freezes & won’t talk at all.  I’ve uninstalled 2019   & reinstalled & get the same thing.  I haven’t gotten very far with tech support.  I’ve written an email through their contact page & they tell me to call tech support.  I’ve gone back to using JAWS 2018.  It seems like every time they update something stops working & it either doesn’t get fixed or it takes many complaints to fix it.  I know a lot of people don’t have problems & really like the new changes but this version makes me very mad.

Hi all! I currently have JAWS 2018 installed on my computer alongside JAWS 2019. I have tried JAWS 2019 3 or 4 times. So far, I'm not impressed! Each time I tried JAWS 2019, I have run into bugs. The last time that I tried it, the update was a bad corrupted version. It wouldn't work with my Dell laptop PC computer at all. My tech teacher also got the same exact result. Because JAWS 2019 is one of the worst worst versions of softwhere that I have run into, into, I want to know the latest news from the user’s point of view. I don’t need someone sending me Freedom Scientific resources because they have overlooked some major bugs. I want feedback from users experiences before I give that vertion of JAWS another try. I have stuck with NVDA and JAWS 2018 instead.

Hi gang: As often is the case for me since I filter my list messages, I may be late in the game to offer my suggestion, but here it is based on a spreadsheet I made up for bank info where I wanted to be able to update the spreadsheet as I was getting the info over the phone.

I had 15 columns, a-o. I figure that, to start with, it will take me a long time to fill up 100 rows, so that is what I decided I needed.

Place cursor on first column title. Alt to upper ribbon. Right arrow to Formulas. tab to Define name split btn. Enter. Enter again, type exactly minus the brackets: [TitleRegion1..o100 which means I estimate that O will be the last column needed, and row 100 the last row needed for this spreadsheet.
So, if you add another column after the 15th column plus another 50 rows, just change what you type: [TitleRegion1..p150 which means I estimate that P will be the last column needed, and row 150 the last row needed for this spreadsheet.

Now, Jaws will read the column titles correctly as you tab from row to row.

First I have to get it to work in the first place. For some reason I can’t get automatic readings of row and column headings to work using this method at all.

I already have a template of this workbook set up and I usually just open it each time a new month starts and then use F12 to save it but giving it the name of the month.

For example, my template is Sales Summary and I then save it, for example, as Sales Summary June 2019.

I wouldn’t mind setting up the row and column title reading on each sheet separately if I could just get it to work.

I’m not able to set this up by defining a name on a worksheet and then copying that sheet multiple times. Even if I set the scope to the worksheet rather than the workbook, Jaws doesn’t read column or row headings on the next sheets.



What you want can be done easily manually by first creating copies of your first sheet 31 times, one sheet for each day of the month. Then, place your cursor in the cell of the first sheet where you want to define the name, press the applications key, up arrow to “Define name…” and press enter. Type “Title” if you wish both column and row headings to be read by Jaws and press enter. Now, move to sheet two and do the same, except this time type “Title2” as the name. Continue doing this on subsequent sheets, each time increasing the number after “Title”. Note that there is no space between “Title” and the number.



Not sure if this helps or if you wanted a more automatic method, but I can’t seem to do it any other way. I even tried grouping the sheets and then defining a name, but this doesn’t work.

Pardon my error, that last technique is the "when I only want it during this session" method with JAWS. This is how to set them in the spreadsheet itself such that JAWS will recognize their existence and announce them whenever you open a specific spreadsheet:

Assigning a Title Row (Column Titles) and/or Title Column (Row Titles) in Excel

You can assign column and row titles in Excel. These are nice because they always work with Excel and are saved to the workbook. There's no risk of losing a setting in your screen reader.

To add column and row title names:

a. Focus on the first cell in the row or column or at the first cell where the title row and title column intersect
b. Open the Name dialog:

i. Open the Formula ribbon (ALT-M)

ii. Activate the “Define Name” command (M)

iii. Within the drop-down list, activate “Define Name”

iv. The “New Name” dialog opens



Focus is placed in the name field. Within the name field, you can name the focused cell or selected range of cells. In this case, we’re naming the column or row title:

a. Name the cell using the following rules

i. Start the range name with the label that tells Excel you’re creating a title range

1. Title – This tells Excel the column and row that intersect at the active cell are a title row and column
2. ColumnTitle – This tells Excel the focused column contains the titles for the rows within the range
3. RowTitle – this tells Excel the focused row contains titles for the columns in the range

ii. Add a name for the range

1. Title_WidgetSales
2. ColumnTitle_WidgetSales
3. RowTitle_WidgetSales

iii. Optional - Add the last cell in the range preceded by two periods

1. Use this when you have multiple regions in a worksheet
2. Title_WidgetSales..J25
3. ColumTitle_WidgetSales..h32
4. RowTitle_WidgetSales..r12
5. Remember the cell address referenced is the last cell in the range for which you are creating titles

The next field in the dialog sets the scope for the name. this is a combo box. Use UP and DOWN ARROW to choose from between:

* Workbook - the title Is unique and can’t be used elsewhere in a workbook
* A Specific Worksheet - the name can be used elsewhere in a workbook

You can add a comment for the named cell or region, this is strictly for your personal reference and doesn’t affect the echo of the column or row title name

The last field references the cell name or range of selected cells you’re naming. You can leave this field alone.

Activate the OK button to save the name and close the dialog.

Save the workbook and the titles are permanently saved and will work on any computer.

If you have titles set to echo in JAWS, the titles will echo and you won’t lose the settings.
