This can be a very useful option for braille users who want some speech but don’t necessarily want Jaws to speak everything and it was really designed with braille users in mind. It is not a useful option for a completely blind person who relies on speech only.

Say Character Say Prior Word Say Next Word Say Word Spell Word Say Prior Line Say Current Line Spell Current Line Say All
etc. So, you have speech muted, but when using navigational commands except for arrow keys, JAWS will speak normally.

Sieghard, Are you able to articulate to me what Speech on Demand really does? Even without following the steps you and Bill each outlined, I was finding that the JAWS spacebar then S would mute my speech. JAWS says Speech on Demand, but when this is active, I havent’ noticed JAWS speaking so it’s effectively been a mute function for me. I’m not clear how someone would use Speech on Demand and am guessing that you have to customize how JAWS will or won’t speak in this mode, but can’t imagine how it’s used.

Just for your information, you can accomplish what you described also in the following way:
1. Press Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by S – this will turn on speech on demand 2. Now press Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by Shift + S – Jaws will say “Speech off set to speech mute” 3. Press Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by S again – Jaws will now say full speech and from now on when you press this layered shortcut it will toggle between mute and full speech. If you want to go back to speech on demand simply repeat the above steps, first toggle speech to mute, then press the layered keystroke but with Shift + S and Jaws will say “Speech off set to speech on demand”, now the toggle is back between full speech and speech on demand.

speech.
4. Arrow down to Less Speech Options. 5. Press SPACE BAR to toggle speech from Speech On Demand to Mute Speech. 6. TAB to OK, and press ENTER to save settings.
7. Now, INSERT plus SPACE, followed by S will mute speech instead of setting it to Speech On Demand.

Or, Here is the quick and durty way to get JAWS to read the row
and columb titles.
1. Place the curser at the beginning of the row and at the top of the
columb that you want spoken.
2. To get Jaws to say the row titles, press and hold Insert, Alt,

Control and press C.

From a tutorial I put together for a former student. There is another way to do this via JAWS such that it "doesn't stick," but my client always wanted JAWS to read column headers (and, sometimes, row titles) every time he needed to touch a given spreadsheet, so this is how to set things up in the spreadsheet itself such that JAWS will read these any time it's opened:
You will receive many files where the column title row has not been defined such that JAWS can read it. Once you figure out which row contains the column titles, do the following: 1. INS+V, Bring up JAWS Verbosity Settings 2. Type column, in the Verbosity Search Box 3. Arrow down to Column Titles Row Range Set 4. Hit Spacebar, this should cause JAWS to announce the row number you were sitting on that contains the column titles. (If this is on the first row JAWS will say one but if it’s the fifth row it will say five.) If you also want JAWS to announce the rows by the data that you have in the first column, you will want to continue as follows: 1. Hit Down Arrow to move to the Row Titles for Column Range Set 2. Hit spacebar and JAWS will announce the column letter that contains the data that will be used to announce the row title. Hi tom, I agree with you regarding the Jaws cursor. At least in XP I was able to find some things with it, but as Jaws has progressed, or regressed, as the case may be, there is less and less functionality. I’m not sure why I even try to use it any more, as I get the blankety-blanke blanks 98% of the time. This has forced me to try the touch cursor more often, though I’m underwhelmed with it so far. Guess I just need to spend more time with it. Really liked your definition of the John’s curser. Very clever. Best, Norma

Hi, Going back even as far as Windows XP, I’ve seen many instances in which invoking the Jaws cursor and then using the arrow keys results in “blank, blank, blank” et cetera and I’ve never gotten a satisfactory answer regarding why that happens. I’ve tried tweaking the screen resolution and other settings, to no avail. As for the John’s cursor, I’ve never actually encountered one of those but I would speculate that it must be some device that kicks into high gear when a guy hanging out in the red-light district gets busted and hauled in for soliciting.

I do not know what goes on in those technology showcases, but at least wish some Canadian and American mates appearing in those places with their real comments and feed-backs. I sometimes listen FSCast podcasts, however, it is nothing more than a commercial session with some plastic questions and comments rather than a real community driven discussion on the product itself. But, actually, you could ignore all my comments above and could keep on offering your gratitudes to Mr. Dammery and to his team for their "magical job" enabling us to use notepad! Regards

I have encountered a similar situation, and have found it is the fault of another program that is interacting with my assistive technology. May want to see what other programs you have running that could be causing the lack of desktop shortcut

Otherwise, you can press Windows-key, plus r for the run dialog, and type jaws2019 and hit enter.
None of my desktop shortcut keys work when I use Jaws 2019, but they work fine if I run Jaws 2018. Neither Microsoft or FS can explain that.
I've done repairs, uninstall and reinstall, with no change.
So, the run dialog has become my friend.

Just for your information, you can accomplish what you described also in the following way:
1. Press Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by S – this will turn on speech on demand 2. Now press Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by Shift + S – Jaws will say “Speech off set to speech mute” 3. Press Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by S again – Jaws will now say full speech and from now on when you press this layered shortcut it will toggle between mute and full speech. If you want to go back to speech on demand simply repeat the above steps, first toggle speech to mute, then press the layered keystroke but with Shift + S and Jaws will say “Speech off set to speech on demand”, now the toggle is back between full speech and speech on demand.

no, that's why you should assign a shortcut to start JAWS. or if JAWS

was pinned to the task bar, pressing the windows key plus the number of the position of JAWS will start JAWS. I have JAWS set to the first position on the task bar, so windows+homerow 1 starts JAWS.

No. But unless you are on my computer, the Jaws hotkey will launch Jaws if you have one set up. Otherwise, you can press Windows-key, plus r for the run dialog, and type jaws2019 and hit enter. Otherwise, you can press Windows-key, plus r for the run dialog, and type jaws2019 and hit enter.
None of my desktop shortcut keys work when I use Jaws 2019, but they work fine if I run Jaws 2018. Neither Microsoft or FS can explain that.
I've done repairs, uninstall and reinstall, with no change.
So, the run dialog has become my friend.
