I have played an ElBraille before and the unit itself is very sturdy. In my opinion the ElBraille is a talking Focus Braille display from Freedom Scientific. The unit come's with both 14 and 40 cells. There are things that I need to tell you about this unit. The unit itself can get very hot. If you are sensitive to hot like me i suggest not getting it. The good news about ElBraille is that You can Purchase an ElBraille in conjunction with a copy of Jaws for windows that you can activate for 2 PCs. I know for 14 cells ElBraille you can detach the docking station which is the brain of ElBraille and use it as a 14 Cells Braille Display. Conclusion: this unit is for those people who want a braille display and Jaws on a single packaged Windows10 device. if you are in a need for a braille display and a and a Windows 10 computer plus jaws license you can go ahead and get this unit. Hello, I do enjoy using mine. It is no speed demon, but it also gets well over 12 hours of batterylife, can handle a sim card for mobile internet connectivity, and is very stable.
TLDR: It is a solid workhorse that will get you through a work/schoolday no matter what you do with plenty of battery to spare in a small footprint that runs the Windows programs you know and love.
Now for some negatives. Charging time can take quite a while with the included adapter. It doesn’t actually have a standby feature – but boot times are reasonably quick with the EMMC solid state storage. (Maybe others have this feature and mine is a fluke). My first recommendation, especially if you’re going to be around a huge crowd of people, is disable the silly vibration and beeping you get when powering on. Or at least turn them to low.
Yes, they will probably release a new version. Yes, it will probably be much more expensive as those processors, while higher powered, are also significantly more expensive to purchase and yes, you can probably upgrade the current one (at a lesser fee). And you will get worse batterylife as they will consume more power.
I really enjoy the keyboard. The space bars placement can take a little time to get used to under the braille display, but it isn’t terrible. All the keys are nicely placed and everything is in reach using a finger. It’s an amazing feeling to have a braille display and computer hanging by a strap from your neck, typing on it in the grocery store. Yes, sure, you can use a separate braille display and phone or laptop, but this is seamless. They’re both together. And that brings me to my last thing.
Separating the two of them is a breeze. Actually getting the machine you might think something is broken, but there’s a little magnetically attached lid that, when popped off, hangs by a rubber band of sorts. Underneath this is a tiny micro USB connector that connects the braille display to the elbraille itself and charges the display, if it needs it. You can switch from Bluetooth to USB mode while retaining the connection to the elbraille, too, so there’s no need to separate the two of them unless you know you won’t be needing Windows.
I know that was a little more detail than you asked for, but with something this expensive I always like to be thorough and realistic. Any other questions let me know!

In this regard, I understand that Freedom Scientific is introducing a new model in the near future. If anyone here owns this device, I would appreciate some honest feedback/perspective regarding its ease of use, versatility etc. I have a Brailliant BI 32 which I have used off/on in conjunction with a laptop. However, I find this set-up cumbersome and I’ve never felt all that comfortable using the Brailliant, as there are times while I am using it, that it will jump to a new page in a Word document where I am taking notes. I am considering selling it. The ElBraille is more or less like a laptop, using a Perkins keyboard which I appreciate. I would appreciate any and all responses.

Re: Graphics and pictures on a web site
Jaffar Sidek
Hi. You might even consider the use of CSS or Cascading Style
sheets. These are documents that will allow you to determine the
layout and look of your page, and you could do amazing things with
them: like hiding text from the sighted viewer, yet exposing
those texts to screen readers. Many web pages take this approach
when implementing the "Skip to navigation" or "Skip to content"
links. This wold mean that while your web page is well described
for your blind visitors, all those info considered unnecessary to
the sighted would be hidden from them. So they would see your
images, while those images would have descriptions tagged and read
out to the low vision or the blind without any apparent
unnecessary clutter. Contact me off list if you are interested to
take this approach. Cheers!

Kevin,
As for colors, mainly you want to be sure there is a clear contrast between the words and the background.
Don't use dark gray on light gray. If possible, set up a way for people to adjust it on the fly for themselves.
I don't know the coding to do that.
Test your page in several browsers.
Label graphics that give meaningful information; like if a link is going to a PDF file, or what it is to.
If it is just a blue line to separate sections, I wouldn't tag it with anything but a blank tag.
If it is a logo, like Dave's, then you want to give it a useful tag.

To me it is very accessible, but I know Sage 50 like the back of my hand because I have been using it and its previous version, Simply Accounting, for well over 20 years. There are things you have to do with the Jaws cursor, sometimes the touch cursor and under Windows 10 you are generally better off not to use the traditional accessibility display driver which is still the default. The new so-called “GDI Hooking” method reads more in Sage, for example, if I lookup a transaction I entered in the purchases journal or bring up a trial balance or vendor aged report then I can read this information with the Jaws cursor if I don’t use the accessibility display driver, if I use it the Jaws cursor only reads blank. You can of course get around this as well by bringing up the report and then press Alt + F followed by “O” which is the command to “Open in Excel”. It will ask you to save the file, but once you do Excel opens and loads whichever report you have on the screen. If I have to really do a lot of detailed checking of data and maybe search for something this is my preferred method. Also, the main screen of Sage does not read at all, this is where you select if you want to use the General Journal, Bank Reconciliation, the Purchases or Payments modules/journals etc. I know that if I open Sage I have to tab 5 times for the general journal, 6 times for bank reconciliation, 7 times for the Suppliers list, 8 times for purchases and 9 times for payments. Somebody who wasn’t as familiar with the program and who tried to use it for the first time would probably be very frustrated and conclude that it is largely inaccessible. I haven’t upgraded because I was sick and tired of paying them hundreds of Dollars every year for their so-called support which I never use and to get a new version which essentially was no different than the previous one. I also used to use their payroll module and during that time I had no choice because my annual payment also included the updates to the tax tables for Canada and so on. But for some years now I use a payroll service called Payworks where all we have to do is log in and enter each employees hours and they do the rest. A few days later (I do payroll every 2 weeks) the wages are auto-deposited into each employees bank account, Payworks does the monthly payments to the government for employment insurance, Canada Pension Plan and the income tax deductions and if an employee quits they file the Record of Employment and all that. I am a member of the Canadian Federation for Independent Business and as such I get a pretty big discount for this service, it only costs I think $11.95 per pay period (26 per year) and 99 Cents per employee for the auto deposit etc. If you need a comprehensive accounting solution and are not invested in one yet I would absolutely recommend Quickbooks. They have an accessibility department and have done a lot to make their online solution which works via a monthly subscription accessible. If you want to use their desktop version you do have to pay for scripts which some company developed. Intuit also sponsors Aira so if you use their software or service you can call Aira for free to get help with anything. The person you want to contact about accessibility is Ted Drake:

Kevin, My business “The Diamond Touch Dog Rehabilitation Centre” is training problem dogs. My logo is a picture of my former guide dog. On my website thediamondtouchdog.ca I have my grad picture with him in it and a brief text for the screen reader users to describe the picture. For me, nothing more annoying then when the screen reader just reads out graphic or link. The screen reader users have no idea what the graphic is. I believe in 022 all websites in Canada must by law be accessible for the blind. The text is imbedded. So both groups, the sighted and screen reader users are happy.

There is a picture used for decorative purposes. The screen reader recognizes the picture and says graphic. Sometimes there will be text and other times no text. Would you prefer the screen reader saying graphic and then the text explaining the picture? Or just the graphic? Or nothing at all?
When the graphics do have text do you like it to be very detailed? Or is it okay to just say something like “more information”? I say “more information as I have seen this many times.

Hi,
I just noticed that when I begin to type in an email address, Outlook 2010, it does not automaticly store and yes, this is checked in settings to do so. Another big frustrating point is the total inability to get spellchecker in Outlook, to work. All freezes up until I either hit escape or alt tab back to the email being proofed. This is by hitting F7.
Suggestions or fixes highly appreciated,

Fascinating, since I actually find that something in the vibration Eloquence causes in my ears is hard for me to tolerate. I was a huge DecTalk fan for 20 years, but now that I’m on JAWS, I have moved to Vocalizer Nathan. Not crazy about some of the assumptions Vocalizer makes for abbreviations and pronunciations, but there is just something about Eloquence that I find fuzzy with the way my hearing works.

Re: copy JFW settings

Hi Mark,
Try the following:
You export all your settings by going
into the Jaws context menu with, Jaws key + J, if you run Jaws from the system
tray. Then go to, Utilities / Import
/ Export settings submenu and press enter. Now arrow down to, Export settings..., press enter, now make sure that the, Export all settings radio button is selected. Tab to, next, press spacebar. You're now in a dialog to select a name & save location, but the file will already be named and the default location is the desktop, so tab to finish , press enter and all your settings for that Jaws version will be saved to the desktop. After you install Jaws just import this settings file. Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool. Go Dodgers! I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.

Re: copy JFW settings

Hi, here is what you need to do, to get your jaws settings to your second computer. Step number one, go to the utilities menu in Jaws. Press enter on that, in go to export settings. You need to export these settings as a vial that will be stored on your default storage folder. Now, find that file that just got exported to your computer, and copy it, and paste it in Dropbox, other cloud service, or a external drive. Now, go to your second computer, go to the utilities menu of Jaws, and select import settings. Now, make sure you know where your file is in the cloud or you will have to hook up your external drive to that second computer. when you press enter on import settings a dialog will open and you can find the file of settings that you exported. press enter on open, and your settings will be imported into Jaws on your second computer. I hope that makes sense.

But no it doesn’t allow anyone access to anything it just gives you full access as a licensed user to the office suite that’s it nothing else. And it’s just temporary just let you know if you want to switch if that’s your issue or not. After a few days I’ll disable it. As we use the family plan with Pam gets her subscription and then we have five other ones we can share. And we don’t use all of them so that’s why I can offer you one temporarily. I received an invitation, from her, where she is sharing her Microsoft 365 program with me. As so damned nice of you to offer this Pam, this truly makes me nervous where I have to click on this tab or that and click to accept your invitation. Am I offering someone to get into my network? As much as I love your offer Pam, I'm nervous as hell to do anything. Your biggest fan, Rick
