Re: JAWS Becomes Sluggish When Writing Emails in Outlook

I have been using Outlook for well over 20 years and just as you describe with Thunderbird, I have had the occasional issue here and there, but for the most part Outlook does work well and while I don't have need for all the features it has, I also don't come across many accessibility issues, either. Yes, there were times when the auto-complete list didn't read in Jaws and apparently some people still experience this, but it's working for me and many others. There are occasionally other forces at play when it comes to issues in a particular application. Is Outlook perfect, far from it, but I would have the same problem if somebody claimed this characteristic for Thunderbird.

No offense taken. But in my defense: If using something because it works is biased then I am biased. Yes I had an issue with corrupt files. first time in 5 years that I have had any problems. And it is not just me lots of us use it because it is easier and doesn't do all the weird things outlook does. People use outlook mostly because that is what the corporate world uses as part of the office suite. Doesnt have anything to do with accessibility...

I find this is a Jaws issue. NVDA works ok with Outlook without having to disable hardware graphics acceleration.

Like Rick, I use Outlook because it's the program used for emails in the corporate sphere. It also has the calendar which I find very useful.

Re: JAWS Becomes Sluggish When Writing Emails in Outlook

It is a free email client from Mozilla, the same organization or whatever you want to call it which makes the Firefox browser.
I hope Randy won't take this the wrong way, I don't mean any offense, but he is obviously somewhat biased towards it and suggested just a few days ago that if you use Thunderbird you have no more issues. But I also seem to remember him posting yesterday that he is having some issues with it which would proof my belief that no matter what you use there will always be issues, if there weren't everybody would use it and there would be no reason for groups like this one.

Re: JAWS Becomes Sluggish When Writing Emails in Outlook

No, it needs t be checked, the control reads as follows:
Disable hardware graphics acceleration
You "disable" it if you check the box.

At one point my I3 system did what you described and I don't know what happened, but without me doing anything this is for the most part not a problem any more. That particular system is still not nearly as snappy as my other systems which are I5 and I7, but I can understand that it is certainly annoying.

Re: JAWS Becomes Sluggish When Writing Emails in Outlook

Zel Iscel

Hi listers,

I can't thank you enough for your valuable tips on this topic! Jaws has been bugging me for years with various laptops I've bought in that time. Your tips have resolved my problems to a great extent although Outlook still crashes at times when I use it with Jaws. The answer for me was to ' Disable hardware graphics acceleration'.

I find this is a Jaws issue. NVDA works ok with Outlook without having to disable hardware graphics acceleration.

Like Rick, I use Outlook because it's the program used for emails in the corporate sphere. It also has the calendar which I find very useful.

Cheers
Zel

Alt + G will toggle graphics acceleration once you are on Advanced, you can entirely do it by keyboard shortcut:
Alt + F followed by T then A for advanced and then Alt + G

Alt + G will toggle graphics acceleration once you are on Advanced, you can entirely do it by keyboard shortcut:
Alt + F followed by T then A for advanced and then Alt + G

I haven’t had time to run the install on the latest update, but hopefully can get around to doing it tonight.

This particular email address issue is present on both my Windows 10 machines. Running a stand-alone Office 2016 license on both computers.

Hopefully, after I update and reboot, this will all be moot.

Hi Christobal,

Granted I am on a Jaws Beta built, but the auto-suggest feature has worked for me now consistently for many month and while you may not have the official April update (or May update since we are almost in May), this definitely worked for the March update and the February update. Here is an example, I start a new email and type the letter “j”:

JAWS Private Beta Group. JAWSBETA@.... (Recent People).
1 of 5
Jonathan Mosen. jmosen@.... (Recent People).
2 of 5
Johnna Simmons. johnnascat@.... (Other Suggestions).
3 of 5
James Robinson. jardatalearningcenter@.... (Other Suggestions).
4 of 5
Jenifer Barr. claudastar@.... (Other Suggestions).
5 of 5

As soon as I typed the “J” it read me out the address for the Jaws list, then I simply arrowed down through the other suggestions.

Regards,

Sieghard

This is a known bug that is still frustratingly present for some of us Jaws 2019 and Office 2016 users.

Every time a new JFW update comes out, I report it and it’s acknowledged and am told that Vispero’s working on a fix. I think the last message I got that hopefully it would finally be addressed with the next Jaws update was back in March of this year. Who knows.

Anyway, one partial workaround is to execute the alt+K command after typing out a few letters of an email address. You’ll then be taken to a list of emails where you can choose from. This won’t work if you don’t have that particular email saved in your address book though.

Hi All,

So I implemented your suggestion of disabling graphic acceleration, and that has certainly improved things, but it still becomes sluggish sometimes with JAWS. It does emit air when it does this. I also have to keep going to desktop or elsewhere and then coming up, for the short respite of being able to use Outlook seamlessly.

Dan, I think plain text, but I am not sure. Could that make a difference?
Also, my laptop emits some air from the vents on the side - more than
usual

Hi all,

I use JAWS 2018, Windows 10, Outlook 16. JAWS behaves very sluggishly
in
Outlook when crafting messages. I have uninstalled and reinstalled
Outlook, and that has not fixed the issue. I currently write my emails
in Notepad and then copy-paste them which is inconvenient.

Can anyone think of other workarounds? I know that this problem does
not
come up for most, but I would nonetheless like to know what you would
do in case you were facing this issue. Thank you so much.

Best,
Rahul

Hi,

There was only 5 add-ins so I ignored them. I got the graphics accelerator box checked and the other unchecked. I'll let you know and thanks for your help.

Another thing that can be attempted is to disable Outlook add-ons. These can sometimes monkey around with Outlook.
Obviously you don't want to disable an add-on that you need, but you'd be surprised what gets enabled. Poke around and turn off what you don't need.

Disable hardware graphics acceleration check box checked Play animated GIFs check box not checked I as you can see, also have the JIF's disabled and in general, I have pretty much anything having to do with visual indicators or animations turned off wherever I find them.
I believe there's another place in Outlook options where you can access the hardware acceleration checkbox, but this is the one I know of off hand.
