Re: Unable to quit JAWS using Insert+F4

Van Lant, Robin

The problem is that the laptop has function keys set to be media keys by default. So, you need to press the FN key with the JAWS key and F4. I do this on my personal laptop.

Hi all,

I hope this Email finds you all in good spirit.

My friend has recently purchased a laptop equipped with Windows10.
Since he is not that tech savvy, he wanted me to install his prefered
apps and do all the necessary settings according to his liking. I
installed JAWS and NVDA successfully; however, I was unable to perform
the Insert+F4 command to quit JAWS by any means, even when setting
keyboard layout to laptop. As I hit Caps lock+F4, JAWS speaks
"Windows+P" and opens a projection listbox with 4 options like,
"Computer only," "Extend" etc. I tried the same via an external USB
keyboard, but to no avail. Besides, Application key for bringing up a
context menu is non-functional, I can easily launch the same with
Shift+F10 though. Now, it really makes me wonder why such a strange is
happening. Your tips and tricks will be highly appreciated.

Yes, I thought I was accidentally hitting caps lock somehow, but maybe that's not the case. I'm also seeing where JAWS says that I have control and/or alt held down. I just had this happen and tried someone's idea of hitting the left and right Alt keys repeateadly back and forth and surprisingly, that cleared it. I then did it with the control key and, again, it seemed to clear the issue. ItCertainly is an odd issue.

Creating a signature in Outlook 2010/2013/2016

1. Alt+f=file menu.
2. T=options.
3. Down-Arrow once to mail, or press m=mail.
4. Tab several times until you get to the word signature, or, pres alt+n.
5. Press you're spacebar or, enter key.
6. Tab a few times.
7. "you will hear/see "new signature alt+n".
8 Press enter or spacebar.
9. Press enter.
10. Type a name for your signature. Example; the account/email address,
11. Press tab then spacebar or, enter on the okay button.
12. Now you are placed on the signature page. As you tab/navigate read
your choices for font.
13. When you arrive within the edit box here you can type in your signature,
then tab and press the okay button.
14. You're now given a screen of various choices. Tab through to decide
whether you wish to check or uncheck any of these boxes. Once you tab to
the okay button and press enter, you are placed back into the inbox and have
created you're signature.

Re: Unable to quit JAWS using Insert+F4

James Bentley

Are you not running Jaws from the system tray? If doing an insert/jaws key plus J doesn't put you in to the Jaws options, that is telling you that all you need to do is put Jaws in to the system tray. Then, insert/Jaws F4 will work the way you want it to.

If you can alt tab to the Jaws options menu, then go in to basics and tab to run Jaws in the system tray and check that check box.

Good luck,

James B

hello;

if your friend has a HP computer, I believe you'll need to have sighted help to turn off the Funtion keys.

you do this in the BIOS Setup Utility

to find out whether this is the actual reason why you can't perform the jaws keystroke, try pressing the FNKey with the insert&f4 keys. note you will need to do this with any jaws keystroke, example, getting the time, system tray, etc.

Hello; I forgot to mention, if you tell us which model of computer your talking about, obviously it's a laptop,
there is a function key keystroke to turn on and off certain behaviors.
example, mousepad,
volume up and down, etc.

Hi all,

I hope this Email finds you all in good spirit.

My friend has recently purchased a laptop equipped with Windows10.
Since he is not that tech savvy, he wanted me to install his prefered apps
and do all the necessary settings according to his liking. I installed JAWS
and NVDA successfully; however, I was unable to perform the Insert+F4
command to quit JAWS by any means, even when setting keyboard layout to
laptop. As I hit Caps lock+F4, JAWS speaks "Windows+P" and opens a
projection listbox with 4 options like, "Computer only," "Extend" etc. I
tried the same via an external USB keyboard, but to no avail. Besides,
Application key for bringing up a context menu is non-functional, I can
easily launch the same with
Shift+F10 though. Now, it really makes me wonder why such a strange is
happening. Your tips and tricks will be highly appreciated.

Hello; although you didn't say what model of computer your friend is using,
it sounds like you need to change the behavior of the function keys.

using a dell computer, you can,
1, go to desktop,
2, hold down the FNKey,
now press the escape key.
now try the keystroke insert+f4.
you can also do, FNKey+insert+f4.

well, if your using outlook 2016,
and you follow the steps, when you do a shift+tab, jaws perhaps will not say edit box,
but, if you use your arrow keys, you should see the text, now you can edit the wording.

Re: Editing signature Outlook2016 JAWS2019

For me using Office 365 I go to File > Options > Mail category and then I tab to the button "Signatures..." and activate it.
It puts me immediately on the OK button, if you tab forward you go to Cancel, than the email signatures tab, then the list of signatures, after that you have buttons for "New", "Delete" and "Rename", after that the drop-down fields where you select the signature you want for new messages and replys.
After that you have Font, font size and so on, eventually you get to a "Picture" and "Hyperlink" button and one tab after Hyperlink you are in the edit field.
Alternatively, you can simply press Shift+Tab once when you are on the OK button and that takes you into the edit field.
Now, for me when I just tried it the first time I arrived in the edit field either by tabbing forward or pressing Shift+Tab, I could not review the text of my signature. However, if I pressed tab and then once I was in the edit field I pressed it once more to get to OK and then pressed Shift+Tab to go back then I cou;ld review and edit the signature. Similarly if I pressed Shift+Tab right away I could not review the text, but pressing Shift+Tab once more to the "Hyperlink" button and then pressing tab again to go forward into the edit box I could then review and change the text.
I know this sounds complicated and I don't know why it doesn't work the first time you get to the edit field regardless whether it's by pressing tab a lot of Shift+Tab once I don't know, but this is how it works for me.

I tried to use winzip to zip some files. I use to be able to use winzip with windows 7 and for some reason it is no longer working. I’m using Windows 10 and Jaws 2018. Is there something I need to setup on Jaws or is there another zip program that works with Jaws?  Thanks, Kevin

Re: Jaws not talking when tabing through the network section

Yes, enter may give you these two options, but selecting the “left double click” option let’s you easily choose a Wi-Fi network if you are at a hotel or somewhere else without ever having to open Network Settings.

Hi,

Again, working for me.  I went to the JFW system tray list with JAWS Key and F11, then selected my network, pressed enter, and got Troubleshooting, or Open Network Sharing etc.  Everything speaks fine.

All the best

Go over to your system tray then arrow to where jaws says your network name and press enter and try to tab around the screen. Jaws 2018 will not say anything unless I turn narrator

Can you explain in more detail what you mean by “Network area”? I just went to Settings > Network and Internet” and Jaws reads many things when tabbing through these different categories although I am using Jaws 2019.

Yes, a good example of where one needs to launch Narrator since Jaws through 2019 seem to be mostly useless in there.
