It sounds like you installed JAWS when offline.

Try running the installer again and repairing it.  It won’t install the OCR components when offline correctly.

Subject: Now, sometimes I cannot convert to OCR an image PDF document

Hello List,

There are two ways to use the Jaws OCR to convert an image PDF file.

I have noticed a change when trying one way, the other still works.

I recently had to switch to a new hard disk. This meant I had to download and install: Windows 10 version 1809, the latest Jaws 2019 and Adobe Acrobat Reader DC v19.10.200.

Before this complete upgrade, I could open a PDF image file either as a Thunderbird attachment or by pressing ENTER on the PDF file in the directory tree. There was then a Yes/No prompt for Jaws to do the OCR of the document.

Now, there is no “alert empty document” message nor is there the prompt to do the OCR.

I get the Virtual cursor. It is a blank window but the Jaws plus page-down command gives: Start free trial.

When I turn off the Virtual cursor and start the OCR with

Jaws plus space bar then o.

Pressing “d” (for a document), I get: OCR failed to start.

Pressing “w” (for a window), gives me the OCR converted text.

The PDF document is converted but,

On the right of some lines are these statements:

   Create PDF

   Edit PDF

   With Acrobat Pro DC

   Start free trial

The second way to convert PDF to text, still works. Highlight the PDF file in the directory tree or File Explorer,

the applications key has:    select “convenient OCR with Jaws”.

When I do an OCR of the window, the PDF and Pro DC message share the window. This seems to prevent Jaws from converting the PDF document.

How do I get rid of the start free trial with Acrobat Pro DC?

Thanks,

Peter T.

Hi,

This is only true if you have Windows 10 Pro.  Home won’t let you connect unattended to another Home computer.

Remote Desktop allows you to connect to your computer provided you know your home computer’s IP address.

You probably also have to set up port forwarding in your router to allow the connection and of course you have to make sure Remote Desktop is enabled for the computer you want to connect to.

If you don’t have a fixed IP address which for a home connection is likely you would have to set up something called a “dynamic DNS” which allows you to set up an easy to remember name and if your IP address changes the service will automatically update this so that the name you set up still works, below is a website with more information:

https://dyn.com/dns/dyndns-pro-free-trial/

Lastly, if you use Jaws you may have to contact Vispero, I think Remote Desktop may not be something which works with a basic Jaws license, if I go to Jaws > About it says the following in addition to the version information etc.:

Upgrades Remaining: 2

Remote Access: Enabled

Tandem Direct: Disabled

Jaws 2019 not giving background color in Excel 2016 or 2019

Russell Solowoniuk

Hi everyone,

I am trying to use Conditional formatting in both Excel 2016 and 2019. I choose to use a formula to decide which cells are formatted, choose cells in sheet 1 that do not equal cells in sheet 2, and choose to fill the cells matching the criteria with a red background fill. The conditional formatting is working, but using Jaws 2019, I have no way of knowing whether or not it is working, because Jaws reads “text color black, background color white” when I press Insert + F, and “Black on white” when I press Insert + 5 on cells that have different values. If I load NVDA and press Insert+ F on these cells, NVDA says “black on bright red background”.

Has anyone else noticed this? I am getting so frustrated with Jaws not being able to do basic things like this when a free screen reader like NVDA is able to do it with no problem!

Thanks for any feedback.

Russell

Hi Karrah,

I currently use it at Capella University.

There are links to create, and view post.

Buttons to get to previous, and next discussions.

Checkboxes to get to individual post within a given persons post with reply buttons at the end of each post.

There is an okay button at the very bottom of the current persons post to get out of that post taking you back to the list of post for the given discussion matter.

Advisory: JAWS announces "Microsoft Candidate UI" if typing with hardware keyboard input suggestions enabled in Windows 10 Version 1809

Hi all,

The following issue was brought up on another list and was subsequently confirmed:

If hardware keyboard input suggestions is turned on, JAWS will announce “Microsoft Candidate UI” when you type text.

To resolve this:

  1. Open Settings (Windows+I)/Devices/Typing.
  2. Go to hardware keyboard grouping and turn off “Show text suggestions as I type” option (Version 1803 will show it as a different option).

Cheers,

Joseph

you can use a windows keystroke, windows-key+up arrow.

The issue is when I am composing an Email…

When putting in the addresses, JAWS says the full name  as  it auto completes, but when I tab it only reads a  small portion of the address.

Also in the body of  the message each line is really small.

When the message is sent and received, the formatting is as usual.

Any ideas about what I need to correct so the formatting is less confusing as I write out messages?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, John. To maximize the screen when composing a message,

1. Open the new message.

2. Press ALT plus SPACE.

3. Arrow up twice to Maximize. If Maximize says “unavailable” the screen is already maximized. Just press ESCAPE to return to the message.

4. If in step 3 you did not hear the word “unavailable”, Press ENTER.

You will be back in the message you were about to compose. The screen will be maximized.

At work I just got a  new computer with Windows 10.  It has Outlook 2013 installed.

John:

You may already have done this, but are you maximizing the screen?

I find that this sometimes helps with these sorts of issues.

You were correct.

That did not solve my problem, but thanks anyway.

I don’t  think it is related to compact view, as that is about the presentation of the messages list, but you can certainly turn it off to check.  It’s on the View ribbon, under View settings, which is the second button from the left.  Once on that, go to the button for other view settings and press enter to open a dialog of options.  Tab until you heard the checkbox for compact view.  Uncheck it and also be sure the next radio button is set to always show in single line.

Betsy:

I am doing good, but my wife had an accident where she broke both her wrists in a  fall.

I am working from home for the next few months so I can attend to her.

As for my Outlook problem…

Your suggestions are not  what I need.

This only seems to  happen when I send a forward or reply.

For example, if typing in my name in the to or cc field, I type J and  JAWS says my name and Email address as it should as it auto fills, but when I hit tab JAWS just says John and if I try to read the field with a say line it will read just John, but if I read with say word, JAWS says John Doering as  it should.

As for the body of  the message…

For my first few lines  of  this reply read by line with JAWS as…

Betsy:

I am good,

But my wife had

An accident

Get what I am indicating?

When you receive the message it should look fine.

I believe it has something to do with compact mode, but do not know how to turn it off.

Thanks,
