For my own personal machines, yes. For my parents, though, probably not. And honestly, outside of RDP I don’t see a reason to upgrade to pro, and I say that now as someone still running Win 7 Ultimate.

The best approach is NVDA Remote. You just have to leave it on and connected all the time while you're away.

Hi Bill.  I know how you feel.  I'm surprised that you actually lost the sound device drivers.

It is very frustrating to loose speech!

Here are my thoughts on using more than one sound card.

I use more than one sound card.  The trick is to choose which is going to be your default sound device.  Then you can choose what apps will be heard.

Narrator, NVDA, and Jaws can be set to a specific sound card which can be different than your default.

Windows now has a way to set the output sound device for some things including screen readers.  I can't say how to use it as I find the whole sound system in Windows 10 to be very confusing.

One problem is loosing speech during logon as the screen reader often reverts to the default device at the logon screen and when the UAC screen appears when installing or using some programs.  If my default device happens to be off or turned down; I won't hear the prompts.

I have some inexpensive Logitech USB powered speakers that are also USB sound device.  So, I can simply unplug and plug them back in if I loose speech.  But then, It sometimes becomes the default sound device and I need to reset a bunch of sound settings again.

Sometimes screen readers switch sound cards as I'm working. Even jumping back and fourth between then inside one app.  Hard to recreate this.

In short. You can use more than one sound device but it is challenging.

I really have a complex setrup now that makes it more chalenging.  I have 2 computers. I have them both connected to a USB mixing board.  OK Now. What did I turn down or off?

Hi, Amanda. I currently use Total Recorder for recording captured Internet

for which I want to record the stream, press JAWS key plus SPACE, then S to
turn speech off, then press ENTER to go to the website.
I know there is supposed to be a way to get Total Recorder to exclude JAWS
from what it records, but this has not worked well for me. What happens when
I try to do this is this. I follow the instructions for installing Total
Recorder the way you're supposed to, to only install the Curnel mode driver.
When I start Total recorder that way, it does not record JAWS. It also
records the stream, when I can get it to play. Often, though, the stream
will not play in this mode, plus, when I want to use WinAmp to play my
music, the music won't play. This is why I just let JAWS record at the
beginning, and edit JAWS off the beginning of the recording, after I have
completed the recording.
I have used Total recorder for about eight years now, and although there
have been bugs now and then, I am satisfied with its operation.
If you should decide to purchase Total Recorder Professional Edition,
which is about $39, I would be happy to help you with the learning curve. I

I used it.  I made some Jaws frames to monitor different areas of the interface. It didn't take much to make it work for me. TotalRecorder is a pretty accessible program out of the box.

However, Total Recorder's functionality is not as good as it was in Windows 7.  Some of the driver modes don't work now.  That is a limitation in Windows.  I don't know how long it has been since it was updated. I haven't needed TR since I rebuilt a clean system.

Hello List,

There are two ways to use the Jaws OCR to convert an image PDF file.

I have noticed a change when trying one way, the other still works.

I recently had to switch to a new hard disk. This meant I had to download and install: Windows 10 version 1809, the latest Jaws 2019 and Adobe Acrobat Reader DC v19.10.200.

Before this complete upgrade, I could open a PDF image file either as a Thunderbird attachment or by pressing ENTER on the PDF file in the directory tree. There was then a Yes/No prompt for Jaws to do the OCR of the document.

Now, there is no “alert empty document” message nor is there the prompt to do the OCR.

I get the Virtual cursor. It is a blank window but the Jaws plus page-down command gives: Start free trial.

When I turn off the Virtual cursor and start the OCR with

Jaws plus space bar then o.

Pressing “d” (for a document), I get: OCR failed to start.

Pressing “w” (for a window), gives me the OCR converted text.

The PDF document is converted but,

On the right of some lines are these statements:

   Create PDF

   Edit PDF

   With Acrobat Pro DC

   Start free trial

The second way to convert PDF to text, still works. Highlight the PDF file in the directory tree or File Explorer,

the applications key has:    select “convenient OCR with Jaws”.

When I do an OCR of the window, the PDF and Pro DC message share the window. This seems to prevent Jaws from converting the PDF document.

How do I get rid of the start free trial with Acrobat Pro DC?

Thanks,

Peter T.

You can download a zip file of any size for free. It’ll just take longer if it’s a large one, which is why they recommend the hard drive. It’ll let you download a 4 TB zip file, but I wouldn’t want to be the one downloading it.

Hi,

How big are the zip files you can download for free?

I’m thinking of trying it.

Thanks,

Jessica

They don't have a phone number. They do have about 45000000000000 pages of

documentation online, including prices for drive shipments. As I don't have

exact figures handy just at the moment, you might start at their website.

Hi,

Do they have a phone number?

I didn't know that you were allowed to keep the drive.

What would you do with it, since it has your data on it?

How much does it cost to receive a drive?

Thanks,

Jessica

Hi,

Did you use the jaws cursor to see the backup progress?

The backblaze website updates every day or two, so far as I know, and not every minute or even every hour.

You also need to keep your pc turned on and make sure it doesn't go to sleep.

Hi,
My iphone app says nothing has been backed up, and when I go to hte website, and click the “fix this” link, it tells me I need to connect an external drive.

Is that true?
I thought backblaze was supposed to eliminate the need to do this?

Thanks,

Jessica

Hi

I have it set to backup my C & D drives, but according to the iOS app, it’s not making any progress.

What do I do?

Jaws won’t tell me anything either, other than announcing a “pause backup” button.

Are there Jaws scripts for this program? If so, where can I get them?

Hi,

No you do not. It will back up all drives if you do connect one, though. And the drive will need to stay connected for a time if you do want to back it up so it can index and start transferring the files.

hope that helps!

Do I have to connect a drive to my computer in order to use backblaze?

Or will it just backup to backblaze itself without a hard-drive?

Re: Enable Editing button in a protected spread sheet

What you described and were looking for is not strictly speaking the button to unprotect a spreadsheet which was protected. A spreadsheet can be protected or certain cells can be protected with or without a password and that is the option which was described under the Home tab.

What you were looking for, the Enable Editing, is simply a way to safeguard against potential issues which can arise from spreadsheets you get via email, you can also enable editing by pressing F12 and saving them first, this will prompt you to enable saving and after doing that you can also edit the spreadsheet.

Hi John,

Try alt +f and then tab to and hit enter on the info button. Tab down to enable editing and hit enter. This should hopefully be the answer to your dilemma.

Good morning:

I am using Windows 10 and Excel 2013.

Can anyone tell me where the Enable Editing button would be on a protected spread sheet?

Any help would be appreciated.
