I fixed this one before.  I don't have the exact page I used, but this one has the gist:

By default, chrome blocks files with names that google doesn't know are safe.  Disabling it is the only way to download things like pdf's from places that seem to randomly generate the name on request.

Re: sounds for Firefox

There are no settings that I can find in Extra Sounds, and from the reviews it seems as though it's intended to bring back navigational sounds as they were.  It is experimental but was updated last in December 2018.

Sonance appears to be an ambient sound generator, not tied to user actions.  I can't find anything under the name Noise and Click.

sounds for Firefox

Mario

I'd like to add sounds to Firefox such as we had in Navigational Sounds
for the older versions of FF. I stopped using the Quantum versions
because of the lack of sounds which used to indicate what was going on.
I found one called Extra Sounds, Sonance, Noise and Click but can't
figure out how to access it's settings to mod or just see what sounds it
can use. maybe there's one that's more usable for us blind users. does
anyone have any suggestions or can help with the ones I mentioned?

having a problem using chrome to download the latest update to jaws.

Jim Rawls

Hi all,

I’m new to chrome, so bear with me. When I select the download link to download the latest update to jaws, I hear a message that says, this type of file could harm your computer. Do you want to allow, and then it gives the name of the update? Where do I say yes? I see a keep button so I hit enter on it or space bar, and it keeps asking me the same question. How do I get past this? I am using windows ten and jaws 2019 previous update. Jim

place marker doesn't work in word anymore

mike mcglashon

Hey guys:

I don’t know what I did, but,

My place marker in word doesn’t work anymore;

I get the following message.

A protected document or form cannot be marked for returning to a marked place later.

I thought this has something to do with protected versus unprotected files, for read only and such;

When I go into the properties, it doesn’t say protected under file attributes;

Also,

When I hit the f6 in word, I don’t get a thing that says “be careful, files from the internet can be unsae” or whatever that is that I have to hit to unprotect the file;

Please assist;

Without this feature, it is difficult to copy and paste from one doc to another?

Please advise as you like.

Hi Guys,

You could always try setting it to read-only.

Go into the properties for the shortcut, with Alt+Enter, then left arrow to the General page and tick the box that says Read Only.

I don't know if it will work, but there you have it.

I don't use the shortcut any more, because it's just as easy to go to the Run menu Windows+R and type JAWS2019, all with no spaces then enter.

All the best

You need to select everything you want to have double spaced and then, ctrl + 2 will double space it.

Re: alt text

I am using "that other screen reader" for testing, as I cannot afford a full licensed copy of JAWS and haven't installed in 40 minute mode on this machine.

When I am in a Word document and have encountered a picture I hear "Graphic" announced, but that picture (graphic) is not selected just because I have focus on it.  It gets selected when I immediately hit SHIFT+Right Arrow after hearing Graphic.  At this point bringing up the context menu includes all items appropriate to a picture/image/graphic.

I would presume that selecting a pre-existing image in MS-Word 2010 using JAWS would be very, very similar.  When you originally insert an image it is already selected upon insert, until you navigate off/out of it.

Rick,

          The only reason you would not get "format picture" showing up in a context menu is if a picture object is not selected.  Context menus are directly based upon, well, context - and the picture object must be checked before the context menu for same will appear when you hit SHIFT+F10, the context menu/applications key, or right click.

           As JM Casey has already noted, if actual or emulated right click is used, the mouse pointer itself must be hovering over the selected picture.  If it isn't, the moment the right click is performed focus shifts to wherever the actual system mouse pointer is located.  The context menu key and SHIFT+F10 are not dependent on mouse pointer position at all, only on what object is currently selected, so it a picture is currently selected the Format Picture is one of the items in the context menu that appears.

Sounds great but here is what I do, you tell me what I’m doing incorrect.

I arrow to the picture and then route the jaws kurser to the pc kurser. I hit the right mouse button, no format picture.

I arrow to the picture, I hit shift F10, and still no format picture option.

When I hear image when I am on the photo/picture, what key or keys do I hit so this will be correct?

Something to do with the autodetect language setting, maybe?

Although I have no idea why it would only effect certain words in the resumé, and those ones in particular!

Still, maybe try turning it off?

I just ran into something I don’t think I have ever encountered before and I’d love to see if someone can explain why this is happening.  I’m calling it a synthesizer behavior, but I’m not really sure if that’s correct, given that I get different, but related results as I change synthesizers. Running Win10 with Office 2016 and one of the first releases of JAWS 2019.

In my job, I review resumes for summer interns.  I got one today that is in Word.  JAWS reports the fond as Garamond.  Most of this resume reads fine, but there are a few lines that are not reading as they appear on screen, based on what I can see and also what JAWS says as I arrow through the text letter by letter.

Here are two examples.

Summer Intern |  Lone Tree, Colorado

In Word, Vocalizer and SAPI read the above as “German Summer Intern |  Danish Lone Tree, Colorado”

If I switch to eloquence, the word “German” is not said before “Summer Intern”, but Eloquence sounds like it’s saying “Summer Intern” with a French or German accent

When I pasted the line into Outlook, it reads correctly.

FINANCIAL SERVICES RELATED EXPERIENCE

In Word, Vocalizer Nathan reads the above as “German FINANCIAL SERVICES RELATED EXPERIENCE“.  It reads correctly in Outlook and Notepad.

Again, if I switch to Eloquence, the word “German” is not said, but Eloquence reads the line with an accent.

In my voice profile, I have the language set to English.  Ever seen something like this?  Kind of reminds me of how sometimes VoiceOver on my phone will read something as if it’s type in another language; Havent’ figured out that oddity either, but that’s a topic for another list.
