Re: alt text

Rick,

The only reason you would not get "format picture" showing up in a context menu is if a picture object is not selected.  Context menus are directly based upon, well, context - and the picture object must be checked before the context menu for same will appear when you hit SHIFT+F10, the context menu/applications key, or right click.

As JM Casey has already noted, if actual or emulated right click is used, the mouse pointer itself must be hovering over the selected picture.  If it isn't, the moment the right click is performed focus shifts to wherever the actual system mouse pointer is located.  The context menu key and SHIFT+F10 are not dependent on mouse pointer position at all, only on what object is currently selected, so it a picture is currently selected the Format Picture is one of the items in the context menu that appears.

Something to do with the autodetect language setting, maybe?

Although I have no idea why it would only effect certain words in the resumé, and those ones in particular!

Still, maybe try turning it off?

I just ran into something I don’t think I have ever encountered before and I’d love to see if someone can explain why this is happening.  I’m calling it a synthesizer behavior, but I’m not really sure if that’s correct, given that I get different, but related results as I change synthesizers. Running Win10 with Office 2016 and one of the first releases of JAWS 2019.

In my job, I review resumes for summer interns.  I got one today that is in Word.  JAWS reports the fond as Garamond.  Most of this resume reads fine, but there are a few lines that are not reading as they appear on screen, based on what I can see and also what JAWS says as I arrow through the text letter by letter.

Here are two examples.

Summer Intern |  Lone Tree, Colorado

In Word, Vocalizer and SAPI read the above as “German Summer Intern |  Danish Lone Tree, Colorado”

If I switch to eloquence, the word “German” is not said before “Summer Intern”, but Eloquence sounds like it’s saying “Summer Intern” with a French or German accent

When I pasted the line into Outlook, it reads correctly.

FINANCIAL SERVICES RELATED EXPERIENCE

In Word, Vocalizer Nathan reads the above as “German FINANCIAL SERVICES RELATED EXPERIENCE“.  It reads correctly in Outlook and Notepad.

Again, if I switch to Eloquence, the word “German” is not said, but Eloquence reads the line with an accent.

In my voice profile, I have the language set to English.  Ever seen something like this?  Kind of reminds me of how sometimes VoiceOver on my phone will read something as if it’s type in another language; Havent’ figured out that oddity either, but that’s a topic for another list.

I know I was able to get to this in the past when I had to work with annotating some pictures, but I don’t have a word file to test it on at the moment.

Not sure if this is your problem or not, but when you use the right mouse button on the numpad, you have to actually make sure your mouse pointer is in the right place to activate that particular item. With JAWS, that’s why it’s usually best to route the JAWS cursor to the PC one before pressing that simulated right mouse button (or, really, you could just use the actual right mouse button at this point yourself).

I don’t exactly know how this works with the touch cursor though because I am rarely in a position where I have to use it.

Re: jaws updates

Hi Bill & All,

You can try assigning the shortcut keystroke from a different Jaws icon, and
I believe it will solve your disappearing keystroke problem.  I assign my
pin to Taskbar shortcut from this Jaws icon and never have to mess with it
after a Jaws build update.  Try the following:
1. Open the Start menu, navigate to the Programs folder and open it.
2. Use first letter navigation to the version of Jaws you want to assign the shortcut keystroke to.  Press the letter, J, until you reach JAWS2019, for example.
3. With the preferred version of JAWS highlighted Press enter or right arrow to open, up or down arrow to, JAWS, and this is the icon that you want to
use for creating the shortcut keystroke.
4. So, with the JAWS icon highlighted press, Alt + Enter, to open the JAWS
properties, or press the applications key or Shift + F10 to open the context
menu, and press enter on properties.
5. Assign your keystroke, tab to, Apply, press the spacebar, tab to, Okay,
and press Enter.

Take care.  Mike.  Sennt from my iBarstool.

Hi all,

I am sorry if I've missed any recent talk regarding alt text but I am needing to add some alt text to a photo within a 2010 Word document. Using Word 2010, can anyone explain the short-cuts using Jaws latest version and Windows 10? Reading information on the web, it says to right click on the image and I've tried this. It says to then click on the format picture, I cannot find the format picture button. It then says to add the alt text. Is there any way to get this done more easy?

Thank you for putting up with me,

Rick
