Could you send the URL for blind tunes to me privately? I am looking at

looking at next month, though. I currently do not have ITunes on the

Jaws and Clicable Links

Hi,

I'm using JFW 12 on a Toshiba netbook, with Windows 7.
How do I navigate clickable links?
I don't recall.
When I press enter, nothing happens.
Thanks.

Re: Advice needed

Marquette, Ed <Ed.Marquette@...>

Sorry to be a little late here. I really think you have to try the applications with demonstration installation. Usually, these will run for 30 days and then die. You can talk to the software vendors and ask about accessibility, but that is usually a waste. Sighted developers almost never have a clue. At the same time, you do not want to take months installing and uninstalling demo packages. From my experience, here is how to put a priority on your testing:
1. Anything that is "on-line" or "web-based," meaning that you really don't install anything locally, but access everything through a browser should be immediately sorted to the bottom of the list. There are a few exceptions, but my experience is that anything which is Web-based is slower, more awkward, and likely to be loaded with inaccessible garbage that some programmer thought was cute or pretty.
2. Do your research and read the reviews on the software. If sighted reviewers are excited about the interface, sort those near the bottom. There almost seems to be an inverse relationship between how the sighted world rates an interface and accessibility. If a reviewer criticizes an interface as "old-fashioned" or "clunky," sort those applications toward the top.
3. Again, gleaning from reviews of the software, the more times you hear "drag and drop" the further down the priority list the software should go.
None of the above is fail-safe, and there are always exceptions, but if you follow the above, you should hit something that works sooner rather than later.
You should also remember that JAWS has some amazing features that make some pretty bad applications work pretty well.
For instance, fields that have no labels can be labeled in JAWS. Some fields that appear to be inaccessible can often be reached using the JAWS cursor. It doesn't always take longer with the JAWS cursor. The Applications Key is your friend. Some functions that require lots of mouse clicks can be reached in a menu with the applications key, which is the rough equivalent of a right mouse click.
Your pastor is right, church records cannot be handled effectively with Excel. You need a relational database that handles one-to-many relationships. There used to be a DOS-based integrated package called Enable, with a little thought, you could design a church database application that could (and did) run circles around the commercial databases. Relational database theory, alas, is outside the scope of this list.
Good luck!

Does anyone use this type of software with Jaws? I have looked at several

"Church Windows", "Excellerate", "Fellowshipone" and "Church Management

We need one that will integrate financial records with the membership

Blind Tunes hits over 10,000 users

John Martyn <johnrobertmartyn@...>

It has been months since I checked all the stats of the website and It is
easily over 10,000 users now. I didn't think it would be that big but it
keeps growing every month. Thank you all so much for downloading this thing.

On another side note RhapsodyBlind has seen action of at least 4500 users
itself, but it has been out longer and it is a paid subscription service, so
I understand the free thing being more popular.

Wow, it just keeps getting more popular. Plus I've been chatting with an
apple developer by the way. Gotta make this thing better.

Dondi,

Sounds like you have "correct spelling mistakes" turned on. I never use this
mode myself so can't advise. You can turn this off in the options dialog, I
think under proofing.

Turning it off in Word should also turn it off in Outlook.

Hi Everybody,

I got a real puzzle going on in Word 2010 and outlook 2010. When I'm typing
and I hear a misspelled word I will go back to correct it by doing
control+back space. This is all fine but JAWS will sometimes pronounce the
word correctly as this is going on. My question is there some key I can
press to have this correctly spelled word inserted in place of the
misspelled word I just deleted?

Re: Ninite

Adrian Spratt

Roger,

You're probably accustomed to keeping your music files on your computer.
Apple has a relatively new service that enables you to store music in what
used to be called the cybersphere but is now known more atmospherically as
the cloud. Storing files somewhere in the digital cloud means you can access
any audio or other file you purchase from any device you have, from your
windows computer to your iPhone. Amazon has also initiated such a service.

At any rate, I'm guessing this is what that option takes you to.

As Dave Carlson says, this is not a JAWS question, but I hope I've steered
you in the right direction to make queries elsewhere.

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

That issue pertained to 11 and 12, but I haven't had enough experience
with other Windows database managers to generalize. I guess my reason
for optimism is JAWS overall track record. It's inherent in the nature
of the list that we spend most of our time analyzing gotchas and
glitches, but it handles obscure programs better than most.

Ted,

I'm surprised to find you this optimistic, considering your past
comments here on access to MS Access.

These applications are, indeed, obscure. It was a good idea to contact
this list, just in case someone does have information. I'd also call
Freedom Scientific to ask if they have experience with any of them.
Then, as you said, I'd contact the application's tech people to see how
aware they are of assistive technology.

Recently I had to upgrade to Windows 7 and it turned out that my Open Book 6 was not compatible with it. I knew that there was a discount for Kurzweil if you were an Open Book user, so I looked into it. Even with the discount the price came to over 600 dollars. After having just bought a new computer that was entirely too high. I went ahead and upgraded to Open Book 9 for just a little over a hundred dollars.

In response to the initial question, I feel I can with some knowledge
compare Open book 9, Kurzweil 12 and DocuScan Plus. The latter is clear and
simple, not for complicated work. Between the other two, if you can afford
Kurzweil and your scanning needs are serious, you will have far better
results than you will have with Open book 9. There are also off-the-shelf
solutions which enable you to input text from the printed page, and many
people use them. I would suggest, though, that if you can afford Kurzweil,
the sheer power and capability of the program outstrips all the others when
used by a blind person.

Now, to stretch and keep this post marginally on topic, note that when you
use Kurzweil, the scripts invoke JAWS sleep mode, so you can either let JAWs
snooze in the background or you can use JAWS to interface with it, though I
don't recommend this approach.

You know, somehow I do not think any version of OpenBook is as easy to use
or as accurate as the release just before the Ruby Edition.
The
Ruby Edition was as close to useless as any product FS has ever released
other than JAWS 4.0. (LOLLOLLOL)
I worked as Editor of a small town newspaper using the release before
Ruby and it worked fine and was quite accurate.

The only thing good about Openbook 9.0 is the Pearl Camera capability. It
really speeds up reading. However the user interface of OB9 as compared to
OB8 really sucks. They have hidden away many of the capabilities to tweak
the settings to improve the recognition on-the-fly.

Also the so-called audio file creation is a joke, since the speech synth
engine routinely mispronounces apostrophe words and words with quotes.
Listening to one of these is painful.

Other than that, I don't know how it compares to other OCR since many are
expensive and comparison would be financially irresponsible.

anyone on this list using OB, if so could you let me know how you like it
and how do it compare with other OCR programs? Thank you:
