Space marker.
Michael Munn
hi all, today in school i experienced this problem with my school use computer. I opened the new document that were sent by my Science and Geography teacher at different times. When I opened both documents I get this message. Every time I press down arrow Jaws told me there is a space marker. and my Braille display showed the Symbol of dot 4 and Dot1-6 sign. Can someone please figure out what is this and how to trouble shoot? All comments are greatly appreciate it. best regards michael Munn Michael Munn Member: Virginia Association of Blind students National Federation of the Blind of Virginia www.nfbv.org Member: Maryland Association of Blind Students National Federation of the Blind of Maryland www.nfbmd.org Students of: Hadley Institute of the Blind

Re: JAWS and Chrome
Chris Hill
Yep, deffinitely looks different on chrome versus firefox. It would be good to know if this is a jaws problem or a chrome problem.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
When I check it out with chrome and nvda, I see empty clickables under the university track heading, those aren't shown with jaws. Either way, you would have difficulty. I, personally, like the menu structure better in firefox, I'll use chrome and its ad-blocking little brother Brave on occasion, but I still do a lot in firefox just because it is easier to get to my bookmarks.

Creating a google doc in Chrome?
Maria Reyes
Hi! I am using Jaws 2018 on a Win10 laptop. I am trying to create a Google doc with Chrome. I can get as far as hitting the create new document button, and when I press enter, I get a template dialogue, Jaws says blank so I hit enter, but the document doesn’t come up, or at least Jaws doesn’t indicate that the doc has been created. Is it possible to do this without a pair of working eyeballs?

Hi Kevin,
Try the following:
1. Press, Control + A, to select the entire
document.
2. Now press, Control + 2, for double line spacing.
If you press, Control + 5, your spacing will
be a line and a half.
Pressing, Control + 1, will put your spacing back to
single line. Take Care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool. Book: a utensil used to pass time while waiting for the computer repairman!

Steve Nutt
Hi Brian,
Actually, if I am a fan boy of anything, it’s Window-Eyes, but that now no longer works well with latest versions of Windows 10.
Window-Eyes had features that JAWS still doesn’t dream of, but that’s another story.
But having used screen readers for years and years, right from the Vocal-Eyes days for DOS, I can tell you that VoiceOver lacks a whole load of real screen reading functionality.
All the best

I tell all my students that I tutor in JAWS that they would be well advised to learn another screen reader, at least for basic tasks, in addition to JAWS [and, I hasten to add, were I tutoring NVDA or Narrator would say the same]. I haven't seen a single one of them not get stuck somewhere that, for whatever reason, an alternative doesn't. Hi Brian,
As I said, the screen reader, is also inferior to JAWS, much like using Narrator to be honest, not a lot of configuration under the hood, unless you get into Apple scripting.

Regardless of which direction of change one is anticipating, it is well worth the effort to find a friend, or a library, or somewhere you can sit down for at least a couple of hours and take a test drive of the OS you're contemplating jumping to. It can save a lot of heartache (and, in the case of Apple products, a lot of money). Although I have, can, and do work with OSX/MacOS, it frustrates me to no end as a long term Windows user. A number of their choices with regard to the UI are completely counterintuitive to me and I stumble with them even though I know they're there. access? How old is your laptop? I have an Acer laptop from I think it was 2012 or 2013 with a second generation i5 processor and 6Gb of RAM and it runs Windows 10 just fine. Only thing I upgraded was the original hard drive which I replaced with an SSD and that is the single most big thing you can do to any computer which has a traditional hard drive. You can get a 500Gb SSD nowadays for $100 or $120 and with that and a new installation of Windows you might be surprised.

Sieghard,
Appreciate the suggestion, but alas, my Dell Latitude PC is not capable of supporting Windows 10 -- I gave it a baleful try about a year ago, with nearly disastrous results. Even the MS technicians threw their virtual hands up after trying to help.
So if I need to purchase new hardware, I'm inclined first to dive into the Mac and OS first, and if I really do crash with that, then go buy a reasonably-priced laptop with a separate numpad and the current Windows 10 OS...like I really have all that money...

Well, but now you did reveal it and I’ll post it on all the hacker forums so expect to be highjacked shortly *Smile* In a way I had better access to some of my applications with Jaws under Windows 7, but I still don’t regret upgrading to Windows 10 since it is such a superior operating system. Windows 10 as well as Jaws running under Windows 10 virtually never crash any more, of course there are always exceptions, but let’s say it’s something like 90% less than with Windows 7. I don’t want to tell you to do this since everybody has to decide for themselves, but before you spend all that money for a Mac you should probably give Windows 10 a try. Of course it also depends a lot on whether you are up to date on Jaws and SMA’s or if you mind spending $90 a year for a Jaws subscription. Yes, Voiceover is free, but Mac computers still are more expensive and there is a reason why even people like Jonathan Mosen who is proficient with both systems prefers to work with Windows when it comes to productivity stuff like word processing, spreadsheets and so on. If you don’t need them then maybe that is different although I also think Jaws with Chrome is way more efficient on the web than Voiceover with Safari.

A couple of days ago JAWS started giving me a message “new notification”. I get no other message. I tried the JAWS scanning option on the window, but JAWS said there is no window. Any ideas on how I access this message? I hate to just ignore it, in case it is some sort of security risk.
