Re: looking for others using Jaws 2019 and track changes in Word 2016
Amy Bower
there are many functions that I can still use successfully with Jaws 2019, Word 2016 and track changes. The only thing that seems broken to me is that when I am reading through a revised document, Jaws reads both the deleted and inserted text. In the past, Jaws read only the new text. Now that it is reading both, it can be quite impossible to figure out if revisions have been entered correctly. the text is very difficult to understand. For example, if the original text was I went to the store yesterday, and the word yesterday was deleted and replaced with today, Jaws would read, I went to the store yesterdaytoday. In the past, Jaws would just read the new version of the sentence, I went to the store today. Hope this makes sense. I've tried every setting of how changes are displayed: simple markup, no markup, etc, and get the same result every time. I'm using the retail version of Office, not the subscription version (365), which might be part of the problem. I read that there are now separate scripts for 365 and retail Office 2016...my guess is that the scripts for retail Word 2016 (called Classic) are broken.

Hi Michael,

the start up speed is due to the type of hard drive that you have. There are hard drives with lower revolutions per minute and higher revolutions per minute and then there are solid state drives which are quicker. There are settings that can be adjusted
to change how your windows machine loads.

Re: Processor speed

Well, don't give up. If the slow machine doesn't have one (most likely) you should consider having a solid state drive (ssd) installed. Your boot speed will go up a lot. You can often get away with a much smaller drive if you aren't using all of what you have. I went from a 1tb drive on my old laptop to a 512gb ssd. At that time, 1tb was more than i wanted to spend. It helped a lot. I eventually took that drive and put it in my wife's machine and gave up on my 8-year-old laptop, it was way slower than what you have.
Good luck.

Actually, your screenreader’s virtual buffer will let you copy text that sighted people can’t normally copy from a webpage. Only thing is, you will have to reformat it yourself afterwards.

It worked for me yesterday with JAWS 2019 (January update) and a current installation of Microsoft Word for Office 365. I used Windows+semicolon and chose to review revisions. This gave me a list of the changes in the document.

If applications are running more slowly than you would like, it would be best to find out why before investing in any new hardware.
If I recall correctly, Performance Monitor will show you how much
your CPU, memory and storage are being used over time. Some of the
same information is in Task Manager as well.

That is a decent computer. With those specifications, you should not have any problem surfing the web and doing productivity tasks.
My question to you, is why do you ask? Is your computer not fast enough for your needs? Is it freezing? Is the start up time bothering you?
I have used many computers with similar specs like yours if not a bit lower and they were fine when using JAWS.

Re: Processor speed
Sieghard Weitzel <sieghard@...>
And if you are gaming over the internet and you are on a 6 Mbps ADSL connection a super-fast computer with the latest processor and 32Gb of RAM won’t do you much good. Computers are a system and they are made up of various components and they all play a roll. To again use my car example from the previous email, the high-end Mercedes or BMW which can go 160 or 180 miles an hour won’t do you much good if you are taking the Road to Hanna on Maui. For those who don’t know of it, it’s a 2-lane highway which over a distance of just over 64 miles has approximately 620 curves many of them hairpin turns and you can rarely go faster than 30 miles an hour. In this case that highway would be equivalent to your internet connection speed. I can take my 7-year old laptop on my 275 Mbps fiber connection and download things a lot faster than somebody with the latest 9th generation I7 system on a much slower connection.

all depends on what you are doing. If you're into gaming on line real-time over the internet, then you need one heck of a lot more speed and memory. So it really depends. You're better off than if you still had an Apple II+ with 64k RAM and a 6052 processor.
What I'm saying is that this is a very open-ended question, and your answers will vary. For now, you have plenty, and actually more memory than I have, but then I'm a senior citizen.

Subject: Re: Processor speed That isn’t really a question you should ask, especially the “how fast can it run”. How fast compared to what or doing what? The information you provided tells me you have an I5 processor and the number, 5200U, tells me it is a fifth generation processor. Currently we are on 8th generation processors with the 9th generation coming out soon. What you have is more than sufficient for most anything you would want to do, maybe if you were running complicated statistical or graphical design applications this might be a bit underpowered, but for office, the internet, email and all that sort of stuff it’s fine. Asking if that is enough and how fast it can run is a bit like saying that you have a car with a 1.9 Liter engine and 110 Horsepower and whether that is enough and how fast it can go. The fact is that it can go faster than the speed limit on most highways allows (at least here in North America) and even in Germany where freeways don’t have a speed limit unless they do on certain stretches or it’s bumper to bumper traffic such an average engine can still go easily a hundred miles an hour. Can a high-end Mercedes or BMW go faster, sure it can, I once drove with a business associate on a rather empty freeway south of Munich in his 7-series BMW and he took the car up to 260 Km/h, approx.. 160 miles per hour. In the same way an 8th or brand-new 9th generation I7 processor would of course be a lot faster, but processor speed alone does not make the day. The question I would ask is what issues you have and does your laptop have an SSD (solid state drive) or a traditional hard drive? If it has a hard drive then spending $100 or $150 to upgrade to a 500Gb SSD would give you a very significant performance boost.
