Thank you for all your efforts to make Quicken accessible to us who cannot read print. It is a program that I need to use.

JAWS pronounces things a lot better than a lot of people I know do, so the occasional flub doesn't really bother me too much.

what to o when win 7 won't talk on startup
Robert Logue <bobcat11@...>
My computer was working well enough. But I just installed a windows security update and now it won't talk when booting. No windows sound either.
To further complicate things. I recently added a new user account and removed my original account. I'm giving the system away and wanted to clean it up. It was working ok with the new account till I rebooted after the windows update. Hope I get some eyes on this. Have to connect a monitor and mouse just to get someone to look at it. Just wondering if there are any magic keystrokes at the start-up screen to get Windows talking. Bob

Yes, I know the cost is more. But FS gave me the price for either upgrade from where I'm at. So, my question. Does it make sense from the operating system point of view? For personal use, is it better to just stay with the standard editions of both Jaws and operating system? Or to rephrase, what do the professional versions of the operating systems provide. Is it just more for networking and things like that? Jean

QuickBooks accessibility
Raewyn Whisker <Raewyn.Whisker@...>
Hello Curtis, Marilyn, Chris and everyone interested,
I have to say it is good news to hear that someone is making QuickBooks more accessible, but please remember, that when a script is written it is quite often relevant for that version only. This is not to say that is the case here, but it is quite often. As a lot of you will know I am the representative of Accomplish CashManager, and I just wanted to remind everyone that CashManager is a product that is accessible out of the box - no scripts required to make it work at all. We have been working with the National Federation of the Blind, the Blind Merchants Association, and all the other major organisations within America to ensure our product does the job required of it. If anyone wants to have a play with the product you can download a trial without any obligation. Go to either our website www.accomplishglobal.com or our distributors website http://www.handytech.us/new.html#cashmanager If you want to hear what some of our current customers think about the product, please have a read of these testimonials. http://us.accomplishglobal.com/about/what-people-are-saying-about-cashma nager.html Regards Raewyn Whisker Account Manager Accomplish Limited Phone +64 9 571 4560 X 715 Email raewyn.whisker@... <mailto:raewyn.whisker@...> Website www.accomplishglobal.com <http://www.accomplishglobal.com> Skype cashmanager.sales ##################################################################################### Scanned by MailMarshal - Marshal8e6's comprehensive email content security solution. Hi guys

I see a few problems with the mentioned Dell laptop and have a few recommendations which would give you a better machine. Firstly it comes with 32 bit windows which can only use 3 GB of the 4 GB installed RAM so I would recommend 64 bit windows. Then another thing, as a jaws user you don't need a graphics card like that, you can rather get one with a smaller graphics card and a bigger hard drive maybe 750 GB or even a TB in this laptop class. The final thing which is a small technical point and depends what you'll use the machine for, the processor is 2.2 GHz core i7 with 6 MB cash, if possible rather look for something with 8 MB cash even if it's only a 2 GHz core i7. I'm pritty clued up on computers so just ask if you need any further help. Nickus

Subject: QuickBooksand quicken accessibility for JAWS I might as well announce it but Quickbooks and Quicken scripts are on the way, however I am not releasing them as of yet. They are still in testing and development. The quickbooks scripts are towards the end of development and testing but quicken is more of a challenge. Quicken uses a lot of graphics and it takes time to find them all to label them my special way. Quickbooks works wonderfully with 2011 and development for Quicken 2012 is going good so far. Quickbooks 2012 is coming soon. The NFB National Federation of the Blind is participating in this particular project. I flew out to Baltimore and they were very interested in this new development. I might be coming under fire for even releasing this information, but I'm not scared. I have complete faith that what I'm doing for the blind community is justified and backed up legally. Besides, wouldn't you all like the option to use such mainstream software that could even give you more freedom? John Martyn -----Original Message----- From: jfw-bounces@... Sentence reading can behave differently from line reading. I think

Sentence is the default for Word, and may be the only choice. Another word to notice is wind-either what one does to a watch, or that which glows. Sentence mode is slightly better at judging context.

Subject: Re: Read and Read I don't know a solution to this. The same problem exists with St. for saint or street and Dr. for doctor or drive. You can have JAWS pronounce any of these the same way every time, but that does not solve the problem of which should be spoken in a particular context. It is just one of those screen reader quirks we have to tolerate as far as I have been able to determine. Joni -----Original Message----- From: Dondi Sent: Thursday, January 19, 2012 4:21 AM To: JAWS mailing list Subject: Read and Read Hello Everybody. What does everybody do for the word read? When I type the word r e a d my JAWS13 always pronounces this word in the past tense as r e d. I have gone so far as adding the word read to the dictionary and told JAWS to pronounce it as r e e d. But that's very limiting as far as sounding partly right. Is there a way to use read in both it's present and past meanings. Re: Selecting text and files
dave grossoehme
The windows key+ the Pause key will take you to the system menu in windows 7. If you wish to print anything from anywhere in windows control+p will print for you. Control+f will find an item inside a window. A lot of times control+w will givfe a list of windows keys. Control+s when you are in a document will save your information. Control+b will let you type something in bold depend upon what version of Word you are using.
I hope these will help. Your Friend Dave -------------------------------------------------- From: "Dondi" <zidnod63@...> Sent: Wednesday, January 18, 2012 5:46 PM To: "'The Jaws for Windows support list.'" <jfw@...> Subject: RE: Selecting text and files Hi Dave,

Dave...
Yes, this is all based on how well the speech engines were designed.

Contextual pronunciation is a step above simple word-for-word pronunciation, and thereby requires greater processing power. I suppose you could set up your own rules in the JAWS dictionary if you added word combinations like "will read", "I read very", "I read the", or "go read". However there will still be many word pairs that are pronounced differently on their context, as Peter points out. I just tested this by adding the phrase "I read very" and set it to "I reed very" and it now distinguishes that phrase correctly in the sentence: I read very well. However if I have a sentence like I read very few books last year (the past tense of "to read" then of course it's wrong once again. So it's proves to be a real rat-hole when trying to use the JAWS dictionary to set up contextual-based phrase pronunciations except in fairly simple and often-occurring mistakes.
