As some of you may remember, I’m continuing to set up a new Dell Windows 10 computer with Jaws.

 

The computer has an Intel I7 processor, 16 gigabytes of ram, a 12 gigabyte solid-state drive, and a 1 terabyte mechanical hard drive.

 

I mention this right from the start, because this computer should have plenty of horse power to work well with Jaws.

 

I have noticed that, when typing something, after I stop using the computer for 30 seconds or so, I do not get Jaws feedback until I press at least four or five keys.  In other words, there’s a considerable delay until Jaws starts speaking again.

 

I am thinking this is a Jaws issue, but am not totally sure.

 

I’m currently using Jaws 2018, and plan to upgrade to Jaws 2019 soon, although I’m a bit hesitant to do so right now because of other known problems with Jaws 2019 and MS Word.

 

Are there some settings I should look at to try to address this issue?

Many sighted people genuinely don't know the difference between photo-text and 'real' text (as we may call it), unless it is explained to them.

.JPG files can vary quite a bit in resolution, which would affect the quality of the text (if any) gleaned from converted OCR.

I have had good experience with this. Following Don's suggestion, without opening the file press the applications key and arrow to "recognize with JAWS" or just type the letter J. For me, it worked like a charm!

If you are sure that a jpg file has text, you can OCR it with the onboard OCR in JAWS.

Using the application key and highlighting the jpg file, press the letter j and it should work.

John, try pressing insert+spacebar, o, f. I'm not sure if the JPG needs
to be opened with an image editor like Paint or the OCR commands can be
issued on the file without opening it first.

the synopsis for this command is "Captures an image from the selected
file in Windows Explorer and recognizes the text from the image using
the OCR component."

Actually, my church uses a software which allows text layout as in a magazine, and the contents are not readable by a screen reader because they are captured as images. The reason for this is to allow the appearance as in a periodical but the text isn't accessible.

Hi John,
 
I thought the, Recognize with Jaws, feature came out with Jaws 18 but, it didn't come until Jaws2018.  You could also try using Openbook to extract any text from the file as well.
With Openbook open the file, press, Control + P, to open the print dialogue, navigate to, Freedom Import Printer, and press enter.  Wait a little bit for Openbook to get started and to scan the image.  If it finds any text it should read it.

I have had good experience with this.  Following Don's suggestion, without opening the file press the applications key and arrow to "recognize with JAWS" or just type the letter J.  For me, it worked like a charm!

Hi Mich,

technically, you're correct. However, since a photo could also be a hpotographed copy of a document, it may well be something OCR readable.

JAWS 2019 seems faster after log in but problems and delays still remain at log on. FS had a lot of hype about start up but not as great as the hype.

Hi,

  As an aside if you use Office 365 or Word 2016 you can open a pdf file directly in Word.  Most formatting is intact and you can then edit.

I have been following the messages in this thread but find that I do have a question.

 

My default PDF reader is Adobe acrobat DC. I use this to have the capability to edit PDF forms and other PDF files.

 

I am completely new to using Adobe acrobat, rather than adobe reader.

 

When I try to access a PDF document online through Internet explorer, and the PDF displays, I find that all JAWS will do is to say something like “open parent document button.” When I press enter, hoping to access the text with JAWS, all I get is “blank” when I arrow up or down.

 

Any advice/thoughts please? Perhaps I need to install an extension?

Hi, Tom. Make sure Adobe Reader DC is your default program to open pdf files. This can be done by searching for the word default in the start menu.

2. Arrow down to Manage AddOns, and press ENTER.

3. Make sure you are displaying all AddOns, it should look like this:

 

Toolbars and Extensions radio button checked

 

All add-ons

 

4. Disable any AddOns which pertain to Adobe.

Depending on how you have your browser set up it might open up in the browser or the file can be handed off to whatever you have set as your system's default PDF viewer.  If the latter, you can use the Save As feature of the system PDF viewer (e.g., Adobe Acrobat DC).  If the former, there's generally a download control in the browser's PDF presenter, but I haven't played with getting to that control via screen reader.
