JAWS and Udemy?

James Homuth

How accessible/useable is the Udemy online learning site with JAWS? I’m running 18 now, but plans to upgrade to 2019 in the near future. On win 7, so still have IE, along with firefox and Chrome, both latest versions. Suggestions, up to and including looking elsewhere, appreciated.

Re: Keyboard arrow Echo in JAWS 19

Hi, Barbara. I believe it is JAWS 2019 you installed. To turn off Phonetic announcements,

1. Press JAWS key plus six on the numbers row, just above the letter Y.
2. Press CONTROL plus SHIFT plus D to load the default JAWS configuration.
3. Type the following letters with no spaces between them:

p h o

4. Arrow down through the search results looking for the words

When pausing after character navigation, speak character phonetically

5. Tap the space bar until you hear the word Never.
6. TAB to the OK button, and press ENTER.

Now, as you arrow through a document and pause, you will no longer hear the phonetic announcements.

Hi Everyone,

I installed JAWS 19 on a Windows 7 computer and a Windows 10 laptop. I have not tested this on the laptop yet, but on the Windows 7 computer, I get an echo using the arrow keys.

Example. I use the right arrow and it lands on the letter b. After a few seconds I hear bravo. This is a minor thing, but I would like to turn that off. Any ideas how?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Barbara,

It's called phonetic announcement and here's how to turn it off:
1. Open the Settings Center with, Insert + 6, on the number row then press, control, shift + D, to open default all applications.
2. Arrow down to, Text Processing closed, right arrow to open, down arrow to, General closed, right arrow to open, down arrow to, Phonetic Announcement, and rightarrow to open.
3. With Phonetic Announcement open you have 2 choices so, up or down arrow to, When pausing after character navigation, speak character phonetically never, now tab to, Okay, and press enter to save and close.
Take care.  Go Rams!

Having some people abuse me.

A follow up: Related to the email address announcement bug in Jaws 2019

Cristóbal

Hello list,

A follow up to my issue outlined below. After a back and forth with Vispero tech support, it looks like while my issue was identified, a fix is going to have to wait for the next JFW update if that.

See:

Wanted to let you know this was sent to development.  It may be fixed in the next version of JAWS, as they already found a fix for newer versions of Office; we will see if this will apply to your version as well.

My concern and I expressed the same is with the language used. “may” and “we will see”. It’s not like I’m running Office 2003 and I reiterated to them that this issue, be it the autocomplete email address bug nor the calendar appointment subject field bug was not an issue in JFW 2018. I would hope/expect that a fix is forthcoming.

So basically for right now, if anyone else is dealing with the same issue, you have a choice to either live with the autocomplete email address bug or using the fix provided by Vispero and live without Jaws speaking the subject field info in calendar appointments. I find the missing subject field stuff to be more disruptive for my needs so am living with the autocomplete bug for now.

Hi.

You can use JAWS’s new-ish OCR feature to recognise text in photos. It works at least some of the time. The easiest way is to go to the file’s location using File Explorer, activate the context menu with the applications key or shift-f10, and pick the “recognise with JAWS option”. Wait a little bit, and a window should pop up that you can navigate. If the software is able to recognise any text, it will be displayed in that window.

I've never experienced this one, but if you type 'startup' at the start menu search box, a couple results come up for startup settings. One in particular looked promising to try to find a solution.

Debby,  I turned on the touch curser with Shift+PC Curser, but I guess that I don’t understand what the use is for the Touch Curser, because I did not hear anything except some funny little bumping sounds.  I could not get the PC Curser to come back on by just pressing the PC Curser key twice as instructed.  I got the PC Curser back by pressing the JAWS Curser key twice and I heard the Invisible Curser come on and then I pressed the PC Curser key once and got my PC Curser back.  This was after some other experamenting with key combinations and a bit of anxiety until I got it back.

in later versions, it is only accessible if you are using the torch cursor which is only available in windows 10 I believe. Our use it all the time and once I learned this it was fine but without the touch cursor it is totally inaccessible
