They definitely won't send you a USB stick which is also an authorization dongle every two years. As long as I have used Jaws I'd have a lot of these by now. I don't even think this should come with an expectation to lower the price of an SMA, chances they are sending these free matter for the blind anyways, but a DVD is a few cents if you buy large quantities and shipping is probably a buck in the US and a bit more to Canada, outside of North America it's probably the third-party distributors responsibility anyways and I certainly wouldn't think a $1 or $2 reduction of the SMA makes sense, but as I pointed out before, it's the waste which bugs me.

Please report back with your success with correcting the bookmark or with questions should you hit a bump while trying to do so.

Re: JAWS 2019 and tracked changes in MS Word

Edward Green

Hi Loreal,

Whether or not you are working with a .doc or .docx file shouldn't affect how track changes work.

To toggle track changes on and off while typing, press shift+control+e.

Probably the most efficient way to review changes in a document is to press windows key+semi-colon which brings up a JAWS dialog of things you can review such as comments and footnotes. From the resultant list, choose "revisions" and press enter.

The changes should now appear in the virtual viewer, with a numbered link above each. Activating this link will take you to the relevant part of the text in which the change appears.

I hope this is a useful start.

Cheers,

Ed

Re: Is there a reason to not upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10?

The fact of the matter is that if one intends to stay in the Windows ecosystem with an OS supported by Microsoft then getting Windows 10 is not optional.  You can put it off for a short while longer, but January 2020 is getting really, really close.

Anyone who elects to use an unsupported OS as a "daily driver" OS connected to cyberspace is just begging for trouble.

Re: Is there a reason to not upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10?

Sieghard Weitzel <sieghard@...>

That is the sort of blanket statement which has no value, Windows 10 is an operating system and different people have different needs, e.g. somebody may use their Windows 10 computer to do some web browsing, use email and maybe Skype or play some music others are working demanding jobs or like me are self-employed and need to use more or less complex software which may or may not work better with NVDA or Jaws. I am not an NVDA user, but I heard repeatedly that NVDA is slow and sluggish in Windows Explorer which Jaws is not. I believe there is some sort of OCR add-on for NVDA whether it is as good and useful as Jaws OCR I don't know, but I use Jaws OCR daily and sometimes multiple times daily for invoices which are in PDF image format or faxes I receive via the Myfax service.
I don't want to put down NVDA, but I just don't agree with such broad statements which may or may not apply to what I need to do.

Tom,

Under Firefox, CTRL+SHIFT+B brings up the bookmarks manager (which, oddly enough, has the window title "Library").  The structure of the Bookmark Manager is very, very much like File Explorer.

If you don't happen to open with it in the "From Internet Explorer" list of bookmarks, then Shift+Tab back over to the tree view, get yourself to that group, then tab back over in to the actual bookmarks list for that group.  Locate the bookmark for the page you need to edit.  Since I have no idea what you've called it or how it's stored I can't get more specific about what to search for.  Once you've landed on it, you can then hit Tab and start moving through the edit boxes for a bookmark:

  1. Name
  2. Location (the URL itself)
  3. Tags
  4. Keyword

I have never bothered with tags or keyword.  You will, of course, want to select all in the Location edit box and paste in the corrected URL.  There is no save button.  Just make sure to tab out of the field you've edited to make sure it "sticks" and you can then ALT+F4 to close the Bookmarks Manager window.

Re: Evaluating laptop keyboards for jaws functionality [adding applications key]

Thanks for these very good instructions. I only just had the chance to
test them out and it works perfectly. I now have my print screen key
functioning as an applications key.

Hi!

I use a Lenovo L440, and I really like it. The one thing it lacks is the
applications key. However, below are the steps to add this functionality to
the laptop's printscreen key; which in its native functionality I don't
think I have ever needed to use. This is from an email Ann wrote some time
ago on this list. And, I suspect this works on any computer. So, this is a
really easy and productive thing to do:

1. In any application (I used Eudora) press insert+0 to open the script
manager.
2. Press control+shift+d to get to the default script manager.
3. Go to the bottom of the file, so it's easy to find and delete if you
decide you don't like it.).
4. Type control+e to begin a new script.
5. Give it a name, no spaces: ApplicationsKey.
6. Tab. Can be attached to key, check it.
7. Tab, and type a synopsis
8. Tab again and type a fuller description.
9. Tab, and fill in a category (I chose system)
10. Tab. Assign to hotkey. (I pressed print screen).
11. Tab. Okay.
12. Control+s to compile.

Now you have this:

Script ApplicationsKey ()

EndScript

Which won't do a thing. You need to add the command {shift+f10} and compile
again.

Now it looks like this:

Script ApplicationsKey ()

{shift+f10}

EndScript
Close the script manager and test. If it doesn't work the way you want,
delete it.

Richard

Subject: Evaluating laptop keyboards for jaws functionality

Hi All,

How do jaws users evaluate a keyboard on a laptop you are considering?
I'm talking about the presence (or absence) of keys that are necessary to
the functionality of jaws commands.

I received a new Lenovo Ideapad and was dismayed to realize that the
keyboard is missing not only the applications key but also the dedicated
home, end, page up and page down keys. Strangely, my old Lenovo, the one I
am typing this message on, has all these keys so it never occurred to me to
try and verify that the new one would also.
But now I'm wondering, how do you check the keyboard specs when ordering a
new laptop that you haven't actually had your hands on?

Before someone suggests an external keyboard let me say that I require the
portability of a laptop that doesn't necessitate dragging around an extra
keyboard. I also don't really want to remap a bunch of keys to accomplish
everyday functions.

So what do people suggest? Do I really have to drag myself over to
microcenter or some other store so I can actually touch the laptop I'm
considering? Is there another way?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Re: JAWS 2019 disc

Cristóbal

Same issue of needless waste for an item that by the time you get it in your hands will be outdated. Besides, I would imagine that USB stick would be a way less economic option than disks and it's not like you think you can get over and score a free thumb drive. I mean, what's a full JFW executable in size? Vispero's not sending out thousands of 4 or 8 GB sticks either.
Besides, you have to make an effort at this point to get a laptop with an optical drive. Towers can't be too far behind.
Still this all dances around the same issue. Sending out DVD's has become a method that's outlived its use. If someone wants a Jaws installer, there's nothing stopping someone from burning it onto a disk if they absolutely want some sort of hard copy. No different than creating a Windows ISO. And yes, I know not everyone is on the same level of computer literacy, but even then, it's not like they get a hard copy for every update released between the major upgrades and yet, everyone survives.
Between the check for update feature built into Jaws, the .EXE file you can download and long established cycle of multiple updates throughout the year, still advocating for a mailer really is pointless.

I called Vispero yesterday and they said the shipment for the SMA
will be shipping Nextweek due to some delay.

I don't think it's a good idea to discontinue the Disk shippment. I
prefer receiving my SMA

via DVD.

You are right the waste of resource

So do you think they will lower their price for a SMA if you get no disk? I bet Not.

Re: Changed Bookmark Link In Firefox

Brian:

Do you know how I can change/correct the bookmark in Firefox?

It’s under the “from Internet Explorer” set of bookmarks.

Tom,

Just reporting back that the same page, for Grand Rapids, Michigan, opens in all four of the browsers I listed earlier and with the same format and information.

Heaven only knows how that glitch entered into the URL itself in your Firefox bookmarks.
