2 problems with Jaws 2019 and Microsoft Teams

Delaunay Christophe

Hi all,

My PC is a Dell laptop running Windows 7 Entreprise Edition and Jaws 2019.

I was recently added to a Microsoft Teams group and I need to edit Word documents which are shared in this group.

The leader of this group sent a mail to all the people he invited with a link to the list of documents he initiated. The first time I clicked this link, I was requested to download the Microsoft Teams application. I did it and then installed it. Second time I clicked the link, Microsoft Teams opened up and showed me the list of document. I clicked on one of them and saw a menu with three options: Edit in Microsoft Team, Edit in Microsoft Word and Edit in Microsoft Word Online. I chose the second but, while Word was opening and loading the file, Teams showed a dialog box saying something like “Also feel free to edit the document in Teams” with a “close” button and a “ok” button. I clicked the “ok” button but nothing happened. Same with the “close” button.

During this time, Word could finish loading the document and I edited it as I wanted before saving it and then closing Word.

Back to Teams, Jaws did not show me anything, neither speaking, neither in Braille. When I tried to move the cursor, it always said “blank”. A sighted colleague got me out of this trap by clicking a “close” button in the document pane and Teams got back to the file list presented in a table.

However, does anyone know how to get out of such a trap when there is no way to have sighted assistance?

Another problem with Teams is that when I right click on its systray icon, Jaws says “menu” but no menu item is spoken. Is there a way to determine which items are displayed in the Teams systray icon context menu and to interact with them?

Many thanks in advance for any advice. Have a nice day. Chris D

Thanks, I’ll give this a look-see. Need a full extractor. Probably something that can create an ISO or where I can have the full DVD content (including all extras) available for streaming. It’s fairly rare that we need this now. Thus my reluctance to pay for a full blown player or software, but so it goes. If I have to pay for a license, I guess.

Hello list,

I’m in search of a program that can rip DVDs with region codes. Is anyone aware of such a thing? The wife and I had a region code free DVD player for years, but that thing has long since died. We don’t want to buy a new DVD player for the odd-ball DVD she gets from Germany and figured it would make more sense to try to rip it for playback on other devices. Be it a computer or to burn on a new disk. We’ve tried Hand Break, but that doesn’t seem to work.

Again, to be clear, it needs to be able to bypass the region codes that restrict playback on devices in certain parts of the world. This is the particular issue we’re trying to overcome.

I’m a Jaws user, so anything that’s accessible would be preferred. Really though, just looking for something that will do the job.

Thanks,

Cristóbal

The only method that I've found to get JAWS to speak the number of items in a list is either to read the current line (insert-up arrow) or to press insert-tab.

Links in Footnotes No Longer Have the Underline nor are They Announced "Link" in MS Word 2016 with JAWS 2019

Richard B. McDonald

Hi!

Once I began editing my Word document in MS Word 2016 after starting it in MS Word 2007, it seems that the format for a link within a footnote (at least there) are not the same.  The links created in 2007 are blue with a single underlined and JAWS announces “link” when I navigate to it, all as expected.  However, the newest links I created in 2016 are not underlined nor does JAWS announce “link.”  They are blue, though.

Does anyone else have this problem?  Does anyone know how to make the format and JAWS behavior for my 2016 links like those for my 2007 links?

Thanks,

Richard

Hi, Sharon. To remove special characters with the Find/Replace in Notepad:

for page breaks type ^p in the Find box; for paragraph breaks use ^m

The Caret is the number six on the numbers row with the Shift key.

In the Replace box don't type anything. Then TAB and click Replace All to
remove all page or paragraph breaks

I don't think you can remove soft page breaks. The keystroke to insert, and
presumably locate, a hard page break is ctrl+enter.

He meant JAWS key plus three on the NumPad, not JAWS key plus three on the numbers row.

JAWS Key plus three on the NumPad reacts differently. It is like PageDown, it is not bypass.

I don't know yet how to make JAWS read the item counts automatically. Using 2019, with Details view as my choice, I can use insert+up arrow or insert+tab to get the information, and it is accurate. It might be interesting to try to analyze which settings on the View tab of the ribbon are different if you can't do this with those keystrokes.

Re: Excel 2016 and JAWS 2019 Always Crashing on Exit

Hi Amanda,

Maybe you have already tried this, but have you gone to the file menu and exit and tried to get out from there? I remember a couple of years ago I had a similar problem with Acrobat professional. I think that is the way I had to exit because if I used alt+f4 everything crashed and I would have to restart the computer. That was before the days that JAWS could right itself.

Good luck!

Hi!

I am using JAWS 2019 with Excel 2016.  Every time I exit Excel (alt+F4) after saving my workbook (Controls), both Excel and JAWS crash.  I do not know which crashes first, if that matters.  JAWS automatically restarts.  Excel comes up with the dialogue box saying that the program has stopped working and asks me if I would like to restart the program.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks,

Tom,
Usually, you will see the FSCast notifications the first time you run JAWS
with a new version. So for instance, if you have JAWS 2018 open for the
first time that box will come up.
Once you dismissed it, you won't see it again until another update or
version is installed.

checkbox, check it and tab to OK.
You can also do it by searching default settings for "FS", the
following is the only option which shows up:
Notify about new FSCasts not checked
Miscellaneous- that means it's in Settings under the Miscellaneous group.

Subject: How To Disable Automatic F S cast Announcements

Hello, everyone.

I'm setting up a new Windows 10 computer with Jaws, and would like to
know how to disable the automatic FS Cast announcements.

I have other ways of getting this information, and am trying to
simplify things as much as possible.

I'll likely have more questions as I continue the computer setup
process, but, I promise, I'll try to keep my questions to a minimum.

Thank you!

Sorry, Tom, I thought you knew that when I said default settings I meant to go into settings and press Control+Shift+D, sometimes I assume too much instead of providing step-by-step instructions.

Thanks, Larry.

I went into Jaws settings and disabled the auto FS Cast announcements, so
we'll see if the change sticks.

If not, I'll wait for the next time one comes up, and disable them at that
point.

Tom,
Usually, you will see the FSCast notifications the first time you run JAWS
with a new version. So for instance, if you have JAWS 2018 open for the
first time that box will come up.
Once you dismissed it, you won't see it again until another update or
version is installed.

I shut down and re-booted my computer for another reason, and this
time, when Jaws opened, I did not get the FS podcast notification.

I wonder if it just comes upp periodically?

I've looked for default settings, but can't seem to find them in the
Jaws menus.

If you can tell me where I can find them, I'll make the change that way.

When it first comes up you Shift+Tab once to Not show this in the
future, might be slightly different wording, but it's simply a
checkbox, check it and tab to OK.
You can also do it by searching default settings for "FS", the
following is the only option which shows up:
Notify about new FSCasts not checked
Miscellaneous- that means it's in Settings under the Miscellaneous group.
