Re: a big cursor problem
And, in case it helps Jed, I just had a look at the screen resolution on my laptop which has the 4K Touch Screen display and noticed that scaling was set to 250% which also was the recommended setting. I am pretty sure I had tried to set the resolution lower before without fixing the Roboform issue, but this time I set the scaling to 100% and that fixed it. I don't know how that makes a difference visually, but my wife has her own login and I'm pretty sure these settings are specific to the user account so unless she is trying to help me with something and it looks horrible this solution works for me. Here is the exact wording from Jaws speech history:

Hi Jed, It's possibly a screen resolution issue, and I can't remember exactly where the setting is but it will be under "Display", and try lowering the resolution quite substantially. Failing that though, if you know the cursor is jumping up a few rows, can't you just DownArrow a few times until it's back where it needs to be? Matthew

Hey guys,
OK, i'm having a very strange problem, that i need some help with. Noone can seem to come up with the anser, but it's driving me crazy. I use a program to program radios called contact manager. The long and short of it is, i have to add channels to a particular zone in the radio. I can access the zones and the channels. I can get to the zone in the radio, and access the channels that i need to add. The way i did it in the past on my old laptop, i go to the channel that i want to add, route jaws to pc, and do a right mouse click. Now when i route the jaws to PC, if you're looking at it visually on the screen, the cursor jumps up several places on the screen and as a result it highlights the wrong channel. This never use to happen on my other laptop. I'm running the same version of the software as well as the same version of jaws on both machines, both running win 10. I can't think of anything that would make this happen. Today, we shut down jaws, and i had someone just do a right mouse click on the right channel, and the cursor didn't jump up several places, it highlighted the correct channel. Any ideas here guys?
Thanks, Jed

Re: a big cursor problem
Hi Geore,
Can you substantiate the statement " you need to have 1200 /800 or less for jaws to work well" I have mostly 24 inch displays at my store and the recommended screen resolution is 1920 by 1080 and I never noticed having any issues with that resolution. I may agree that on my 4K laptop display the super-high resolution could be what causes the Roboform menus aren't read properly, but again, I have not noticed anything else strange, it's a 15 inch Asus Zenbook with a 4K Touch Screen display and I have it at the default of 3840 × 2160 which is the Recommended settin.

Re: JAWS2018.1811.2 Update Download Links + What's New In This Release
Both the people at Microsoft Accessibility and at Freedom Scientific are technical support specialists, they deal with problems such as yours and many others every day. What Microsoft Accessibility might be able to do better than the people from FS support is to deal with any potential problems which might be caused by Windows or its components hence his recommendation. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people on this and other lists, but I would say as a last resort calling FS support and, if that still doesn't solve your issue, Microsoft Accessibility is always a good idea.

Hi!
I am using JAWS 2019 with Excel 2016. Every time I exit Excel (alt+F4) after saving my workbook (Controls), both Excel and JAWS crash. I do not know which crashes first, if that matters. JAWS automatically restarts. Excel comes up with the dialogue box saying that the program has stopped working and asks me if I would like to restart the program.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi Richard,
And since in Windows and Office there are always numerous ways to skin a cat, you can always just use the keyboard shortcut for Wordcount/statistics, Control+Shift+G.
From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of Richard Turner
Richard, F6 works for me too, but Word Count may not show up if it wasn’t checked after getting to the Status Bar settings with F6 and then doing shift+f10 to bring up the context menu and checking things like Word count, column, (which I find helpful as it tells you how far across the line you are, etc.
If you cannot get there with f6, alt+r then w will give you the word count, or it should anyway.

Re: JAWS Tablet Compatibility
Matthew Horspool
Hi Colby, I don't have any experience using tablets with JAWS. However, as far as I'm aware, JAWS will only work on X86/X64-based systems and not, for example, on ARM processors. Specs for these sorts of systems are pretty much the same as specs for regular laptops. So in a nutshell, go with a tablet that has an Intel Core something in it (I3, I5, I7, M3 or something like that), and a few GB of RAM, and you should be OK. In the worst case, install JAWS right after you buy the tablet, and if it doesn't work return the tablet in the return window. Matthew

Hi Dean, I find the name "Flexible Web" rather ironic as the reason why I don't use it is because it is not "Flexible" enough! I did use it very extensively when it was launched, but got fed up with rules not applying between browsers, and also I found I was having to create dozens of rules when only one would suffice if only I had a bit more control over how the feature worked. For example, I want to be able to create a rule that says: on all web pages, in all browsers, suppress any frame with the word "google" in its URL. Thus suppressing all Google ads in one rule. I’m curious, if people use Flexible Web, where they use it. I used it a bit when the feature was first available, but lost interest because of what I perceived to be the effort involved and the little gain. Mostly, I was using it on newspaper sites, and with Firefox and Edge containing Reading Views, and thanks to the Mercury Reader add-on for Chrome, so does it, those browser-based features seem to obviate the need for Flexible Web. But am I misanalyzing this?

Re: a big cursor problem
Matthew Horspool

Thanks, Jed

Re: surveying about Flexible Web use
Matthew Horspool
Hi Dean, I find the name "Flexible Web" rather ironic as the reason why I don't use it is because it is not "Flexible" enough! I did use it very extensively when it was launched, but got fed up with rules not applying between browsers, and also I found I was having to create dozens of rules when only one would suffice if only I had a bit more control over how the feature worked. For example, I want to be able to create a rule that says: on all web pages, in all browsers, suppress any frame with the word "google" in its URL. Thus suppressing all Google ads in one rule. This is not possible. I'm a Chrome user and am just waiting for it to implement a reader mode. In the meantime I know about the Greesemonkey add-on and, when I get enough time to sit and play, I will get that working. Surely it will be more effective than Flexible Web. Matthew

Re: Where's the Dvorak keyboard in Windows 10?
David Bailes
Hi Lee,
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
to add a new keyboard layout using version 1803 of Windows 10: 1. Go to the Region and language settings in the settings app. One way of doing this is to open the start menu, type some or all of region and language settings, and press Enter. 2. If you then tab through the settings, then after the add a language button, there's a list of installed languages. There may well be only a single language, English (United States). I'm assuming that you want a keyboard layout for the English United states language. Move to this item in the list and press Enter or Spacebar to expand the item. 3. Tab to the options button and press it. You are taken to a page for that language. 4. On this page, there is an add a keyboard button, followed by a list of installed keyboard layouts for the language. 5. Press the add a keyboard button. A pop-up list of keyboard layouts opens. 6. Arrow down this list till you find the keyboard layout you want, and press Enter. This keyboard layout has now been added to the keyboard layouts available to you. 7. You can now switch between keyboard layouts using the windows key + spacebar. David.

Using latest 1803 version, Jaws 2019 and MS office 2016, what is the most efficient and Jaws friendly way to search the calendar for a past appointment? Used to do this on Office 2010 and have not since updating to Office 2016 but old way does not produce the same results. Googled this but did not find any good answered so before doing more advanced searches figured I’d check with the list.

Re: a big cursor problem
I doubt that is a Jaws issue if it worked before, maybe something to do with the hardware on the two different laptops.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
I, for example, use Roboform as a password manager. On all my desktops at work and my old laptop the Roboform menu which I access from the system tray is read just fine. But on my new laptop which has a 4K display Jaws only reads the first letter of each menu item and I have to do a page refresh and a say line for Jaws to read the menu item I am on. A small thing which is annoying and only happens on this one laptop. Have you tried to use the Jaws touch cursor to see if that helps?

Re: How do I get to the Status Bar in MS Word 2016 with JAWS 2019?
Hi Richard,
And since in Windows and Office there are always numerous ways to skin a cat, you can always just use the keyboard shortcut for Wordcount/statistics, Control+Shift+G.

F6 works for me in current Microsoft Word for Office 365 with JAWS 2019. Alternatively, you can use Insert+Numpad-3 to read the status line.

Hi!
I seem to remember that pressing F6 would cycle me around the ribbon, document pane, status bar and so on. Now, when I press F6 all I hear is “document pane.” I want to get to the status bar so I can check on some statistics (e.g., number of words) in my document. How do I get there?
Thanks, Richard
