Re: a big cursor problem

Go to your desktop and press control plus spacebar and you will hear not selected Now press shift plus f10 and choose display in the menu
Now look in there for screen resolution and you need to have 1200 /800 or less for jaws to work well
Test a couple of those choices to you find the one that works best.

Hi Jed, It's possibly a screen resolution issue, and I can't remember exactly where the setting is but it will be under "Display", and try lowering the resolution quite substantially. Failing that though, if you know the cursor is jumping up a few rows, can't you just DownArrow a few times until it's back where it needs to be? Matthew

Hey guys,
OK, i'm having a very strange problem, that i need some help with. Noone can seem to come up with the anser, but it's driving me crazy. I use a program to program radios called contact manager. The long and short of it is, i have to add channels to a particular zone in the radio. I can access the zones and the channels. I can get to the zone in the radio, and access the channels that i need to add. The way i did it in the past on my old laptop, i go to the channel that i want to add, route jaws to pc, and do a right mouse click. Now when i route the jaws to PC, if you're looking at it visually on the screen, the cursor jumps up several places on the screen and as a result it highlights the wrong channel. This never use to happen on my other laptop. I'm running the same version of the software as well as the same version of jaws on both machines, both running win 10. I can't think of anything that would make this happen. Today, we shut down jaws, and i had someone just do a right mouse click on the right channel, and the cursor didn't jump up several places, it highlighted the correct channel. Any ideas here guys?
Thanks, Jed

Re: JAWS Tablet Compatibility
Matthew Horspool
Hi Colby, I don't have any experience using tablets with JAWS. However, as far as I'm aware, JAWS will only work on X86/X64-based systems and not, for example, on ARM processors. Specs for these sorts of systems are pretty much the same as specs for regular laptops. So in a nutshell, go with a tablet that has an Intel Core something in it (I3, I5, I7, M3 or something like that), and a few GB of RAM, and you should be OK. In the worst case, install JAWS right after you buy the tablet, and if it doesn't work return the tablet in the return window. Matthew

Hi Dean, I find the name "Flexible Web" rather ironic as the reason why I don't use it is because it is not "Flexible" enough! I did use it very extensively when it was launched, but got fed up with rules not applying between browsers, and also I found I was having to create dozens of rules when only one would suffice if only I had a bit more control over how the feature worked. For example, I want to be able to create a rule that says: on all web pages, in all browsers, suppress any frame with the word "google" in its URL. Thus suppressing all Google ads in one rule. This is not possible. I'm a Chrome user and am just waiting for it to implement a reader mode. In the meantime I know about the Greesemonkey add-on and, when I get enough time to sit and play, I will get that working. Surely it will be more effective than Flexible Web. Matthew

I’m curious, if people use Flexible Web, where they use it. I used it a bit when the feature was first available, but lost interest because of what I perceived to be the effort involved and the little gain. Mostly, I was using it on newspaper sites, and with Firefox and Edge containing Reading Views, and thanks to the Mercury Reader add-on for Chrome, so does it, those browser-based features seem to obviate the need for Flexible Web. But am I misanalyzing this?

Re: Where's the Dvorak keyboard in Windows 10?

Hi Lee,

to add a new keyboard layout using version 1803 of Windows 10: 1. Go to the Region and language settings in the settings app. One way of doing this is to open the start menu, type some or all of region and language settings, and press Enter. 2. If you then tab through the settings, then after the add a language button, there's a list of installed languages. There may well be only a single language, English (United States). I'm assuming that you want a keyboard layout for the English United states language. Move to this item in the list and press Enter or Spacebar to expand the item. 3. Tab to the options button and press it. You are taken to a page for that language. 4. On this page, there is an add a keyboard button, followed by a list of installed keyboard layouts for the language. 5. Press the add a keyboard button. A pop-up list of keyboard layouts opens. 6. Arrow down this list till you find the keyboard layout you want, and press Enter. This keyboard layout has now been added to the keyboard layouts available to you. 7. You can now switch between keyboard layouts using the windows key + spacebar. David.

I doubt that is a Jaws issue if it worked before, maybe something to do with the hardware on the two different laptops.

I, for example, use Roboform as a password manager. On all my desktops at work and my old laptop the Roboform menu which I access from the system tray is read just fine. But on my new laptop which has a 4K display Jaws only reads the first letter of each menu item and I have to do a page refresh and a say line for Jaws to read the menu item I am on. A small thing which is annoying and only happens on this one laptop. Have you tried to use the Jaws touch cursor to see if that helps?

Richard, F6 works for me too, but Word Count may not show up if it wasn’t checked after getting to the Status Bar settings with F6 and then doing shift+f10 to bring up the context menu and checking things like Word count, column, (which I find helpful as it tells you how far across the line you are, etc.
If you cannot get there with f6, alt+r then w will give you the word count, or it should anyway.

Is it because of NVDA that you always put replies at the end of a message? I rarely ever read your messages because I typically don't feel like going through all the previous messages in the thread to see where you started writing. Also, and just to point out that I'm deliberately sarcastic here, if NVDA never fails why are you on a Jaws list?

Re: Excel 2016 and JAWS 2019 Always Crashing on Exit
Exactly, this happened a lot or maybe I should say it happened almost always in Windows 7 but it's not an issue in Windows 10. That is why I asked if this was Windows 7 or Windows 10. Windows 10 almost never crashes and Jaws 2018 and Jaws 2019 crash very rarely. Of course there is the little problem that in Windows 10 there are a number of other accessibility issues including greatly reduced usefulness of the Jaws cursor, but strictly when it comes to how stabil it is I have no complaints. I wouldn't hold my breath that anything will change with respect to this issue of Jaws/Excel in Windows 7 given that Windows 7 is very much on the backburner these days.

Atleast they recognize it is a good idea to keep a previous working version around. We no longer have any real competition in the screen reader market, so they don't have to be concerned. Too many jobs now depend on Jaws scripts so one cannot easily switch to NVDA or Dolphin and be productive, though I'm not sure how productive people can be when they have to spend so much time dealing with buggy new releases only to have to go back to the previous release to get anything done.
