New Facebook behavior with screen readers and pictures

Cristóbal

Hello list,

So maybe it’s been around for a bit, but I barely noticed it first on the FB iOS app and now while browsing FB on my PC with Firefox and Chrome, but it looks like VoiceOver and Jaws at least are reading the included text in image postings. I know one could always add the alt text, but at least for the few memes and pictures my friend’s and family are posting, I don’t have to do anything special. The text is simply being read. In iOS it was kind of a hassle since you had to first save the picture to your camera roll then navigate to the photos app then use the Seeing AI app to recognize text only to find out that the picture you saved was just of someone’s dog with the word woof on it or something like that. Jaws was way more hit and miss if you were lucky.

Is anyone else seeing this as the saying goes or have I been in the dark and this is simply old news?

Yes, you can read equations presented as MathML on Web pages using nemeth Code. If you move the virtual cursor to the equation and press enter to navigate the expression, the Nemeth code braille is displayed.

Hi listers, This is michael. I have a question about using the Nemoth Code with Jaws and Focus 40 Blue Braille Display. Is that possible to use nemeth code with  my Focus 40 Blue Braille Display with Jaws? If it's possible where can I download the software?

All answers and feedbacks are greatly appreciate it.

Re: surveying about Flexible Web use

I use flexible Web like almost daily. If I saw a Web page that I think it's clutter; I just using the Flexible Web By pressing the Insert Space Layer key and X to toggle the  Flexible Web.
This feature was introduced in Jaws 14 I believe.
I was rifling threw the Old FSCast the other day and I heard the demo that Jonathan Mosen Did back in 2012.

If any of you who are interested Here is the correct link to download the FSCast 2012 September  Edition.

I’m curious, if people use Flexible Web, where they use it.  I used it a bit when the feature was first available, but lost interest because of what I perceived to be the effort involved and the little gain.  Mostly, I was using it on newspaper sites, and with Firefox and Edge containing Reading Views, and thanks to the Mercury Reader add-on for Chrome, so does it, those browser-based features seem to obviate the need for Flexible Web.  But am I misanalyzing this?

No, it is not possible to type in Nemeth braille with JAWS. However,
you can learn UEB math which JAWS does allow you to enter. Here is a
link to a free online course for learning UEB Math braille:
https://uebmath.aphtech.org/ Note that the course assumes that you
know EBAE braille (yes, a strange combination).

Hello All
Just for your information and I do not remember it being stated by Vispero but on contacting Vispero support I was informed that they no longer will support Office 2010 or earlier, only Office 2013, 2016 and 2019 problems.

Keep Smiling!

Yes, there are some bugs.  As we all know new software often has bugs at first launch.  Many times when an issue is fixed, another string of code is broken although this is done by accident and often unknowingly.  Many times too programmers cannot predict how a program will perform in all circumstances since there are so many possible scenarios.  Now I know that Vespiro has not always been the greatest at catching bugs before release but I remind myself and others that while JAWS 2019 has a ways to go the release most likely was ready to the best of their knowledge.

To be perfectly blunt, JAWS 2019 was probably released prematurely.  Vispero seems to have a firm October 31 deadline by which they insist on releasing the latest version of JAWS, regardless of whether or not it still has known bugs that they haven’t have enough time to fix.

In my very humble but opinionated opinion, Jaws 2019 is buggy as hell.  I’ve gone back to using 2018 and will wait for the update to 2019 to see if they fix anything.

I’ve mentioned some of the issues I’ve had on this list, so won’t waste anyones time rehashing them.

Hello all,

Just now, I found that JAWS 2019 and Microsoft Word won’t work together nicely in some aspects. When I’m reading a document, of my own making, JAWS misses some words at times and repeats others—almost as if it’s wrapping up a few phrases/words. I have the document maximized when I’m reading with “say all.” Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening? It doesn’t happen with JAWS 2018 as I’ve checked.

Thank you,

it seems that activation problems are pointed at more often than
anything else for this error code.

I always have installed from the offline installer, and this time is no
different. I even redownloaded it twice but it always stops at 31% with
an "installation failed" message. and yes, the installer matches the
operating system I have(64 bit JAWS for a 64 bit Windows OS).

My experience has been that if the update doesn't install, I can
download the full version from the web site and that install will work.
I sometimes get a message telling me to run a JAWS repair when the
update doesn't work. I have done that, but it doesn't help. So I just
go download the whole stinkin' thing.

Below is one of the search results.  I don't know if this will help but, it seems that activation problems are pointed at more often than anything else for this error code.

Take care.  Go Rams!

So I just
go download the whole stinkin' thing.

no error code, just the message "31%. the installation failed".
I'll call them Monday.
hope I get someone who will help and not just say to try to install 2019.

Hi Mario,

I don't have a clue! Maybe call FS tech support. Are you getting any
error
codes / messages? I just updated 4 computers, 2 Windows 10 and 2
Windows 7
without a problem.

Do you use Windows 7 or Windows 10?

This used to happen a lot to me under Windows 7, Windows 10 rarely ever crashes any more and Jaws under Windows 10 while offering reduced accessibility for many legacy applications I use rarely ever crashes, either.

Hi!

I am using JAWS 2019 with Excel 2016.  Every time I exit Excel (alt+F4) after saving my workbook (Controls), both Excel and JAWS crash.  I do not know which crashes first, if that matters.  JAWS automatically restarts.  Excel comes up with the dialogue box saying that the program has stopped working and asks me if I would like to restart the program.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks,

Richard

Thank you all for posting. I’m grateful for the 2018 update, and I plan to wait a while before upgrading to JAWS 2019. Maybe the company will have the bugs worked out by then. I depend on MS Word and don’t want to risk dealing with bugs when I have a version that works well for me. I never upgrade just to have the latest—waiting until some bugs are fixed.

Hi!

I too have found a few bugs with Word, Excel, and Outlook 2016 with JAWS 2019.  However, I think it is *really* important for us all to first see if there is a solution to the problem to be found on this list, and failing that then to send the issue into JAWS for a spot on the bug fix cue.  I have sent-in about three myself.  We all want JAWS to be functional and stable.  If we do not take the time to help fix things, they won’t be.

Respectfully,

Richard M.

Thank you,

Ashleigh Piccinino

Michael,
Your messages are ending up at the very end of the quoted messages, so probably not being read by very many people.
Make sure when you write your reply, you are above the quoted text.

I deleted one of your messages because it looked to be empty. When you sent a second that looked the same, I jumped to the end and arrowed back up and found your reply.
I won't be doing that again since it is somewhat of a drag.

Just hoping to help.

Well, many people's experience with Jaws 2019 seems to confirm this quite clearly.
This is one of the many things about these huge conglomerates buying up companies and insisting on deadlines for new releases that truly ticks me off. They could not care less about their customers. Atleast they recognize it is a good idea to keep a previous working version around.
We no longer have any real competition in the screen reader market, so they don't have to be concerned. Too many jobs now depend on Jaws scripts so one cannot easily switch to NVDA or Dolphin and be productive, though I'm not sure how productive people can be when they have to spend so much time dealing with buggy new releases only to have to go back to the previous release to get anything done.

I'm done complaining for today.

I guess being a newbee with Jaws I was quite surprised when I was told by Jaws support that it was a good idea to keep a earlier version of Jaws when installing the newest version as the new version may have issues. I know that is always a possibility with new releases but they made it seem that new releases of Jaws were always quite buggy.

I kind of agree with you.
If you purches the new home annual license you probibly be able to keep up with the current version.
Freedom Scientific or Vispero™ is very logical of coming up with this method.

Its always a good idea to keep backup copies of all your important files , as you never know when things could go wrong.

But as a newbie you should know this anyway 😃
