Re: retaining old copy of jaws

Richard Turner

Well, many people's experience with Jaws 2019 seems to confirm this quite clearly.
This is one of the many things about these huge conglomerates buying up companies and insisting on deadlines for new releases that truly ticks me off. They could not care less about their customers. Atleast they recognize it is a good idea to keep a previous working version around.
We no longer have any real competition in the screen reader market, so they don't have to be concerned. Too many jobs now depend on Jaws scripts so one cannot easily switch to NVDA or Dolphin and be productive, though I'm not sure how productive people can be when they have to spend so much time dealing with buggy new releases only to have to go back to the previous release to get anything done.

I'm done complaining for today.

I guess being a newbee with Jaws I was quite surprised when I was told by Jaws support that it was a good idea to keep a earlier version of Jaws when installing the newest version as the new version may have issues. I know that is always a possibility with new releases but they made it seem that new releases of Jaws were always quite buggy.

To be perfectly blunt, JAWS 2019 was probably released prematurely.  Vispero seems to have a firm October 31 deadline by which they insist on releasing the latest version of JAWS, regardless of whether or not it still has known bugs that they haven’t have enough time to fix.

In my very humble but opinionated opinion, Jaws 2019 is buggy as hell.  I’ve gone back to using 2018 and will wait for the update to 2019 to see if they fix anything.

I’ve mentioned some of the issues I’ve had on this list, so won’t waste anyones time rehashing them.

Hello all,

Just now, I found that JAWS 2019 and Microsoft Word won’t work together nicely in some aspects. When I’m reading a document, of my own making, JAWS misses some words at times and repeats others—almost as if it’s wrapping up a few phrases/words. I have the document maximized when I’m reading with “say all.” Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening? It doesn’t happen with JAWS 2018 as I’ve checked.

Thank you,

Re: Protected files

Hi Richard,

I purchased Leasey years ago, but I must say that I don't have it currently installed since I only used a tiny subset of all it offers.

Hi Mario,
I'm running Windows 10 home 64 bit on a Dell laptop with an SSD drive. I just installed this Jaws 2018 update and it took maybe 2 minutes and went without a hitch.
I don't recall where you live, but I'd call Microsoft Accessibility and have them remote into your machine so they can see what happens and I'll be surprised if they can't fix the issue long before Monday.

correction. the code is 8070643. running the installer without JAWS running uses a "built in voice" which eventually speaks an error code.
however, JAWS nor NVDA does not read this code, not even using Speech History, Virtualize mode (insert+alt+w) or Convenient OCR.

This used to happen a lot to me under Windows 7, Windows 10 rarely ever crashes any more and Jaws under Windows 10 while offering reduced accessibility for many legacy applications I use rarely ever crashes, either.

I assume you don't yet have Jaws 2019?

I always have installed from the offline installer, and this time is no
different. I even redownloaded it twice but it always stops at 31% with
an "installation failed" message. and yes, the installer matches the
operating system I have(64 bit JAWS for a 64 bit Windows OS).

My experience has been that if the update doesn't install, I can
download the full version from the web site and that install will work.
I sometimes get a message telling me to run a JAWS repair when the
update doesn't work.  I have done that, but it doesn't help.  So I just
go download the whole stinkin' thing.

[Leasey] Potential Training Course: Microsoft PowerPoint with JAWS for Windows.

David Goldfield <david.goldfield@...>

The following message is from Brian Hartgen and was posted to the Leasey mailing list.

Several weeks ago, we were asked if a training course could be created to teach people how to use Microsoft PowerPoint with JAWS. People not only wanted to learn how to prepare visually appealing PowerPoint presentations, (including adding graphical images), but also how to add music or sound to them, run the presentations as slide shows and add or review Speakers Notes.

This training course has now been researched and it is possible this could be produced in January of 2019. Teaching this subject however is very high risk in a number of areas.

As blind people managing our small company, we will need to ensure that visual assistance is obtained so as to include visually appealing graphics of the required dimensions. But most importantly, it is our view that the support currently provided in terms of screen-reading with PowerPoint from Office 365 is simply not sufficient for what we need to do. Conveying this subject in easy to understand terms was always going to be tricky, but to do so when the access you will receive in this area has shortcomings is even more problematic.

A basic example would be accessing the Speakers Notes. These are notes or reminders to you, the person delivering the presentation, as to what you can say above and beyond what is stated in the slide the audience is viewing. There used to be a keystroke which would allow focus to be set to that area of the screen. This is no longer possible. Moreover, if you are using a Braille display, how are you going to read those notes without disturbing visual focus away from the application? A mechanism for listening to those notes also needs to be found. There are also a large number of other inaccessible areas which need some attention.

To that end, as with all our training courses, we would need please a commitment from anyone interested to make the project viable. This would allow for the delivery of the training course together with bringing the existing JAWS support up-to-date.

We have had a small number of people expressing an interest in this subject so far, but whether it goes ahead really does boil down to what kind of commitment we do receive.

The training course would be delivered over a four-hour period in January of 2019. It would include details of many aspects of creating presentations in an accessible way, identifying (as far as possible) whether the presentations were visually acceptable, navigating through slides, working with visual themes, using tables and bulleted lists, editing presentations, delivering your presentation to an audience, and more. A full course outline would be presented if the training course goes ahead.

If you would like to purchase this training course, please write to brian@.... We will then send to you an invoice for payment. Assuming we have enough committed people to make the course viable, then we will present the details formally on our website with a full course outline. The cost would be £50 which is currently $62. We would ideally need to hear from you by 7 December 2018 because that will give sufficient time for the JAWS scripting work to go ahead prior to the commencement of the training course in 2019.

If we do not receive a sufficient response, unfortunately we cannot take this project further because there are many hours of work ahead even before a training course of this magnitude can start to be prepared.

We very much look forward to hearing from anyone interested in what could be an interesting venture.

Re: curious about today's update for JAWS 2018

We’re still in 2018. I don’t know what the cut-off point is, but it’s somewhat over a year from the previous JAWS release. It was promised that jAWS 2018 would work with Firefox Quantum; until now it’s been almost-but-not-quite-there, as many people (including me) have been experiencing persistent crashes. I believe they have addressed the issue in this update (I hope so, still testing), thus keeping their promise. I don’t know what else has been fixed, but I suspect this will be close to the last JAWS 2018 update.

People tend to complain about the JAWS company, whatever name it goes by, for their upgrade policies.  (Nobody has done so here at present.) So they have annual upgrades, but still make some efforts to maintain the experience of those who, for whatever reason, don’t or can’t upgrade.  So it is with this upgrade to 2018.

The purpose is to improve the experience for people who are still using Jaws 2018 because they have for some reason not yet upgraded. This could be because they don't have an SMA left and currently can't afford or don't want to buy one or maybe they work at larger organisations where often such updates take longer. One of my best friends in Germany used to work at HP and each time he needed an update he had to go through a big application process to get HP to authorize it.

JAWS Tablet Compatibility

Kolby

Hello,
I am looking to purchase a tablet computer to replace my old iPad. I would like to use something that comes with a keyboard if possible but also am curious as to how people are finding using JAWS with tablets without keyboards. I would like to know which tablets work best with JAWS 2019 and what technical specifications I should be looking for the device to have for the fastest performance.
Thank you,
Kolby
