Odd Issue: JAWS 2019 Sound When Pressing Insert+Space Frequently Disappears

David Goldfield <david.goldfield@...>

Hello.

I am using JAWS 2019 with Windows 10 Pro. I am finding that the short sound which is heard when pressing insert+space frequently disappears. If I switch to another sound scheme or to another speech profile the problem seems to be fixed and the sound is once again heard. However, after a while it is no longer heard again and I need to switch profiles again in order for it to play. My default synthesizer is Eloquence. If I switch voice profiles to Microsoft Mobile the problem is fixed and it stays fixed for a while when I switch back to Eloquence. Has anybody else seen this behavior?

I Googled it but found no solution.  It is annoying.  Perhaps if you are *reading* a document it may be a good thing, as others have pointed out.  But, if you are *writing* a document as am I it is not a good thing.  There ought to be some sort of a way to terminate this!

I just wait a moment and it goes away. I figured that was a "new feature" that is a tiny bit annoying since I usually don't want to resume reading. I have not checked to see if it is something to uncheck.

Have you googled it?

It is unreasonable to believe or expect that SMA pricing stays the same forever. I don't even remember how long an SMA for Jaws Home has cost $120 for 2 major upgrades, but I wouldn't be surprised or blame Vispero if they announced that the cost for a 2-upgrade SMA would go up from $120 to $150 in which case it is not so far from the subscription pricing. I also would not be mad at Vispero if they announced in 2 or 3 years that all licenses are being converted to an annual subscription because it would be simpler to administer it especially if they also offer the same subscription in other countries and at basically the same cost after the currency exchange adjustment.

If a brand new JAWS user purchases the product outright for $900 and pays $60 per year for an SMA for 30 years, he will have spent $1,800 on the SMA making the total cost $2,700.

If he pays $90 per year for 30 years the total cost is the same, however, the first method involves laying out $900 up front and one is losing the interest he could have earned on the original outlay.

As I have been using this product since the mid 80's, it is far more economical for me to keep the SMA current. If I were a new customer, I'd definitely go with the yearly license.

Hi Richard,

I'll be damned!  I was running Jaws 16 and the Virtual Cursor options does not show in FF62, but it does show in FF52 ESR.  But, with FF62 the Virtual Cursor options show using Jaws 18 and newer.  In Chrome the Virtual Cursor options don't show no matter what version of Jaws is running.

I use Firefox and after hitting insert+v the first thing is virtual cursor options.

Win 10, latest Firefox.

Hi Steve,

I'm sorry for assuming that you're running IE11, I should of asked what browser you're running from the start.  If you're running Firefox or Chrome, I don't know about other browsers, but these 2 don't have the options in the quick settings I described.

Hi Tom,

I don't know if this will help but, if you go into Word options/ Advanced tab and tab to, Disable hardware graphics acceleration check box, and if this unchecked, check it, tab to, okay, press enter to save / close.  Now, see if this helps any.

Larry:

I tried these steps, and they wouldn't work for me.

However, I turned the preview pane off in Windows Explorer using another set
of steps from another list member, and was successful.

However, my problems with smooth reading of long Microsoft Word documents
and e-mails when using the insert numpad 2 command continues, and I have now
reported it to Freedom Scientific.

I also continue to have my issue of Jaws bogging down after message 30 in a
long listview of e-mail messages.

Once again, I'm using Jaws 2019, and Microsoft Word and Outlook 2016 with
Office 365 on this Windows 7 Dell Lattitude computer.
