i don't know if this would effect jaws. but be aware that some del and hp computers do not have a numlock key so you can not turn the number pad off to use the jaws functions. you would have to use the laptop layout even with a desktop keyboard.

Also, you mentioned you bought a 13 inch model, anything less than a 15 inch laptop will never have as complete a keyboard just because it's not large enough. There are plenty of 15 inch laptops out there which have full keyboards including a numeric pad. My Asus Zenbook has an application key, but I'm so used to pressing Shift+F10 that I rarely use it.

ordering a new laptop that you haven't actually had your hands on?

Before someone suggests an external keyboard let me say that I require
the portability of a laptop that doesn't necessitate dragging around
an extra keyboard. I also don't really want to remap a bunch of keys
to accomplish everyday functions.

So what do people suggest? Do I really have to drag myself over to
microcenter or some other store so I can actually touch the laptop I'm
considering? Is there another way?

The Asus ZenBook is one I'm considering. I can live with a 15 inch
model for the better keyboard. I don't carry my laptop around all that
often, but sometimes when I attend conferences the portability is
essential. So for those situations a good keyboard is a must.

Are you happy with the ZenBook overall?

My HP envy doesn't have this issue. From what I recall, I didn't have to go into the bios to change anything either when I first got it.

And the Shift F10 combo on an HP sometimes requires the FN key as well ans sometimes not. That's probably my biggest issue with my HP laptop at home is sometimes the FN key is required and sometimes not. I often accidentally turn on airplane mode when trying to use JAWS F12 to check the time. I really do need to go get the bios changed.

I am trying to assist a tax accountant who uses Jaws 2018 and Adobe Reader Pro 11 .  She is often give pdf files that are up to 1000 pages to read and extract pages as necessary!  While Jaws reads as normal for smaller documents, less than 500, at 1000+ we only get a Document Empty message.  We know that the document has been OCR’d, in fact when we extract a page from the large document it works well.  We have:

1.       Tested this with NVDA as well as the Adobe Read Out Loud.  We receive the same message.

2.       Tried all of the Adobe reading settings, e.g. process one page at a time, read from left to right, raw stream, etc.

3.       Ran Accessibility Checker which indicated that it indeed it is not an image

4.       Checked the Adobe security settings, which indicates no protection at all.

5.       Behaves the exact same way in Adobe Reader versus Pro.

 

I cannot test this document in Jaws 2019 because they are confidential tax documents, and at this time she does not have Jaws 2019 installed.  (We are working on that now.)

 

If anyone has any ideas at all, we would truly appreciate it.

While I find an applications key incredibly nice I can get around
that, doing without the numpad would be much more troublesome.

A full-size regular US qwerty keyboard (but without function specific
keys like volume up/down) has 102 or 103 keys.

I beg to differ, for the US to call themselves America that is to me no problem, after all, we call them "Americans" not US'ers" or "United Statelers" and
Also, if you feel they should include Canada in America because we are part of North America then how about all the countries of central amd South America, that is still America or the American continent.
Furthermore, there are plenty of places overseas where English is the primary language, e.g. England, Australia, New Zealand.
Let's just let them figure it out, I'm sure if a subscription-based model is what Vispero wants to move to it will be offered here in Canada and elsewhere in due time.

In the US they love to identify themselves as America which is far from being correct. If they want to call themselves America, let them include all of North America. If they don't want to go overseas with this, due to language problems, that is their business but they should at least include all of North America in at least English which is the international language of computers.

HP "Action Keys" can only be toggled on or off via UEFI.  It requires sighted assistance.

Why don't you go where you bought it and ask them to make sure the function keys are enabled, as others pointed out it most likely is set up by default so you have to press the FN together with whatever function key combination, e.g. Jaws Key+FN+F7 would give you your list of links.

As for the application key that is just not there on many laptops and even desktop keyboards, just use Shift+F10, it does the same thing.

I cannot seem to find the application key where in the past it has always been two keys to the right of the space bar. I have my keyboard set to laptop. I have had no luck trying to search these issues online. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Jaws and Very Large PDF documents

Good Morning,
 
I am trying to assist a tax accountant who uses Jaws 2018 and Adobe Reader Pro 11 .  She is often give pdf files that are up to 1000 pages to read and extract pages as necessary!  While Jaws reads as normal for smaller documents, less than 500, at 1000+ we only get a Document Empty message.  We know that the document has been OCR’d, in fact when we extract a page from the large document it works well.  We have:
  1. Tested this with NVDA as well as the Adobe Read Out Loud.  We receive the same message.
  2. Tried all of the Adobe reading settings, e.g. process one page at a time, read from left to right, raw stream, etc.
  3. Ran Accessibility Checker which indicated that it indeed it is not an image
  4. Checked the Adobe security settings, which indicates no protection at all.
  5. Behaves the exact same way in Adobe Reader versus Pro.
 
I cannot test this document in Jaws 2019 because they are confidential tax documents, and at this time she does not have Jaws 2019 installed.  (We are working on that now.)
 
If anyone has any ideas at all, we would truly appreciate it.

Thanks, but I think I am still going to go for a different laptop. It
looks like if I go for a 15 inch instead of a 13 inch I can get all
the keys I want and maybe even save a few dollars.

Just guessing here, but there may not be an application key at all. I
just bought a laptop that doesn't have one and it's going back to the
seller.

As for the function keys, they may be set to perform hardware
functions rather than the application specific functions you would
expect. I'm not sure how you would change that on an HP laptop. But
you can get the app specific function by holding down the FN key while
pressing the function keys.

Hi Nick and all,

In the US they love to identify themselves as America which is far from being correct. If they want to call themselves America, let them include all of North America. If they don't want to go overseas with this, due to language problems, that is their business but they should at least include all of North America in at least English which is the international language of computers.

I sent a message to FS support asking why the new Jaws yearly subscription plan is for US customers only, but I haven’t received any reply yet. Your thoughts on this?

As I see it, they are basically saying that us users outside the US don’t really require a more affordable way to purchase Jaws and that they are only giving this more affordable option to people in the US.

I’m also wondering what for example will stop me from simply using a friends US address when signing up for this plan. I doubt they’ll be monitoring where a user is located while using it, I think the only important thing to them is the address at sign up.

I believe that the only way Microsoft Edge will start automatically is if you have an account and password set up within Microsoft Edge. Even if this is the case, and Microsoft Edge starts automatically, this should not conflict with JAWS starting at login.

Earlier I posted a message about some problems I was having with J2019 right after automatically loading at start up.

 

Recently, after an W1803 update, Edge has been loading automatically at start up. Could this create a conflict which would cause problems for J2019 loading properly?

 

Also, how does one stop Edge loading automatically?
