Re: can't hear jaws when I get a skype call

Mario

from another list, unfortunately there isn't any shortcut key to answer
a call. however the method to use is:

1. Make a shortcut key that immediately puts focus on the Skype 8
window. Do this by assigning a shortcut key to the Skype 8 Desktop shortcut.

2. When a call comes in, type your shortcut, tab for caller ID, then tab
to the Answer button and press Space.

JAWS does the same thing with Skype version 7.  There is a key
combination, alt + page up, to answer, so it is not an issue to not be
able to hear JAWS.  I do not know the Skype 8 answer call command, but I
know it exists.

Hi,

So I’ve recently installed the latest version of skipe onto my PC, but
when I get a skipe call come through I can’t hear Jaws any longer  to be
able to answer the call. It seems like the volume of jaws is lowering
when the skipe call comes through. Does anyone have or know of a
solution to this? Also on a similar note, to answer an incoming skipe
call  I usually use jaws key and f11 to view everything in my system
tray, then scroll down to skipe click that and then from the skipe
dropdown menu which appears I select answer call, is there a quicker way
to answer a call, maybe a key combination/shortcut I’m not aware of?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Maybe reboot your computer now that you set this to Do Nothing and see if that helps.

Here is one solution.  Go to control panel press the letter S untill jaws says sound.  Press enter control tab until jaws says communications page.  By default the radio button that says reduce  the volume of other sounds by 80 percent is checked.  Arrow down untill jaws says do nothing radio button checked.  Press okay.  Hope this helps.

Remember that Microsoft has announced that Skype 7 will finally go away later in November.

There is no global hotkey like Alt+PageUp in Skype 8 to answer a call, but you can put Skype on the desktop and set up a hotkey for it like Alt+Control+S so when a call comes in you can press that hot key to focus/open the Skype app, then use Control+Shift+P to answer the call.

As for taking care of the issue of Jaws being muted or very quiet when a Skype call comes in that is easily fixed and I explained how in my reply to Paul which is more detailed.

Hi Paul,

First of all go to your Sound Settings > Communications tab, here you will probably find that it is set to reduce the volume of other sounds by 80%, arrow down to “Do Nothing” and tab to OK and activate it, this should fix the issue about you not being able to hear Jaws. Probably easiest way to get there is to type “Sound” in the Windows/Cortana search box, arrow down until you find “Sound, control panel”, it will most likely open on the Playback tab, press Control+Tab three times until you get to Communications, Jaws will speak this information:

Windows can automatically adjust the volume of different sounds when you are using your PC to place or receive telephone calls. When Windows detects communications activity:

Do nothing radio button checked

This is what I have it set to, the options are as follows:

Mute all other sounds radio button, 1of 4

Reduce the volume of other sounds by 80% radio button 2 of 4

Reduce the volume of other sounds by 50% radio button, 3 of 4

Do nothing radio button, 4 of 4

As for answering calls, here is what Jaws recommends (taken from the What’s New in Jaws 2019 public beta):

Skype

Skype now offers three options on Windows 10.

1. You can continue using Skype Classic which is version 7 and works very well with JAWS. Note that Skype Classic is expected to be retired at some point not yet known.

Comment: I just read that while Microsoft had postponed Skype 7 retirement, it is now again set for I think late November.

2. You can download and install the new Desktop version 8, which is now supported in JAWS. See details below.

3. You can install the Universal App from the Microsoft Store. However, this is the least accessible at this time and we recommend you install Skype 7 or 8 for the best support.

For users moving to Skype 8, please be certain to download the version referred to as "Skype for Windows" which works well on Windows 10. Note that the Universal App we are not recommending is referred to as "Skype for Windows 10".

For those using Skype version 8, we have added some additional keystrokes to help with navigation since these options are not offered in Skype. These commands are:

• Move to the chat entry field: CTRL+INSERT+E

• Move to the chat history list: CTRL+INSERT+Y

• Move to the conversations list: CTRL+INSERT+N

You can also use the JAWS commands INSERT+W and INSERT+H while focused on Skype for a list of most of the keyboard commands you would want to know when using Skype. For a full list from Microsoft, please visit the

Skype Hotkeys Web Page

Comment: I put the table with the Skype Hotkeys on this website at the end of this message, but removed the Hot Keys for the Mac which are also listed here..

Tip (this is what you asked and want to implement):

You can assign a keystroke such as ALT+CTRL+S to the Skype icon on the Desktop to quickly open Skype to answer an incoming call.

If you are in another application and you receive an incoming call alert, you can press your shortcut keystroke to open Skype, press INSERT+UP ARROW or INSERT+TAB to read the caller information.

Then press CTRL+SHIFT+P or use TAB to choose Answer or Decline.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Howdy,

From our win10 sister list and other reputable sources in the wires and
colleagues from my personal network there have been loads of reports
about people losing their data when they upgrade from windows 10 version
1803 to version 1809. Microsoft has put the version 1809 update back on
the shelf until they figure out what is happening. This seems to be
happening to folks who are signed into one drive while they run the
upgrade. Systems that are not signed into one drive appear not to have
the issue. You can read more of this here.

I had forgotten that Steve Matzura posted a direct link to a download site for Windows PE (Windows Preinstallation Environment) versions that are set up to talk when they run using NVDA.   That site is:  http://www.opopanax.net/download/

I have not used any of these talking Windows PE ISOs, but I have no reason whatsoever to believe they would not work.  The correct one for your system could be downloaded on its own, and then you could just download the Macrium Reflect software without Windows PE.

You would still need to create the Macrium recovery media, which should then use the talking Windows PE to build it.

I just tried this with jaws 2019 beta 2 and after the UIA confirmation
window (nothing they can do about that one) the up to date message box
was focused.

I suggest you provide this feedback to Freedom Scientific, it could be more
a result of how Windows 10 does things, but it certainly won't hurt for them
to take a look at it and, if it is a bug they can do something about then
hopefully it will be fixed in a future update. I am on the Jaws beta list
and will provide this feedback as well, but you should as well via the JAWS

Form<https://www.freedomscientific.com/Forms/JAWSBetaReport>, clicking on
this link takes you straight there.

When I open the Jaws 2018 or 2019 beta ui and go to help then check for

updates Jaws presents a dialog that jaws will not read until you do a

couple of alt tabs to get focus on the dialog box. Why doesn't Jaws

automatically read dialog boxes it creates?

Now, for anyone wanting the latest version of the Macrium 7.1 installer, who doesn't want to have to dig through the steps at the website to eventually download it, I've put it on my Google Drive: Macrium 7.1 Full Installer <https://drive.google.com/uc?export=download&id=1ZyAnnQdVZg766iRVVUW_x54iYf2M2xuu> .

When you activate that link you'll probably get a blank browser tab, followed moments later by a save dialog that asks where you'd like to save the .exe file.

Yes, and I use Rufus to create these routinely.  I prefer to download the ISO and keep it in case I want a second (or Nth) bootable USB drive.

Lots of folks prefer to allow the Media Creation Tool to create the bootable USB media.

I am pretty sure Rufus can do this, but then again if you use the Media Creation Tool it can also do it.

Sieghard,

Just FYI, in reality the two options with regard to not
upgrading this machine now are having the MCT directly create a bootable
USB drive, or downloading the ISO.  If you want the ISO on optical media
you have to use a burning utility to transfer the image file to DVD.
That, or you can use Rufus to create a bootable USB.  There is no
"direct to DVD" option.
