I listen to JAWS, most of the time, using a headset with a microphone.
Lately, I've had difficulty getting proper balance in the sounds from my laptop.
I set the volume so that JAWS sounds fine, but the error messages blast my eardrums.
I'm plugged into an external USB sound card.
I don't see where volume can be adjusted separately.

Sharon,

A couple things:

First select your entire worksheet and Press Alt+o, then c then a. This auto
sizes all columns in the sheet.

then with everything still selected, Ctrl+1 to open the Format Cells Dialog.

Ctrl+Tab to the Alignment page. Tab to word wrap and check the box.

These things may help.

Also somewhere there is a "shrink to fit" option for fonts, but not sure
where it is. Perhaps on the print dialog.

Re: [Bulk] [Bulk] [Bulk] [Bulk] Help with jawssettings

rixmix2009@...

Thanks for taking the time to explain that, Dave.
I hear you!

I agree about the business of using the insert plus spacebar. It is a bit of a danger when I forgot that I have Jaws shut off this way.
But I confess I have made a bit of a habit with it and really have not had too much problem with it.
But I wondered if there was any change in say now the computer would act, and if say a web page was still reading though jaws was not speaking.

It is not my experience, however, as to what you say about the switching between applications when using the insert plus 2 method to stop my typing echo.
It may well be the case that JAWS stays silent for the Scree Echo. But not ditto for typing echo, as you say. Not for me anyhow.

Just now, for example. I turn off typing echo with insert plus number 2. I type to this point. Then I alt plus tab to my open wordpad file where I was pasting some information from a web page for later reference. I peck out a few words. The characters are all echoed. I alt tab to return to this email. And my characters are all echoing again. No problem to just turn it off again. But when I go back and forth quite a bit, I find that the insert plus spacebar then letter S keeps Jaws off until I say to come back on by repeating that keystroke set.

So if it, the typing echo, is supposed to stay off between applications, it is not for me.

Thanks.
Rik

Subject: Re: [Bulk] Re: [Bulk] Re: [Bulk] Re: [Bulk] Re: Help with jawssettings

Rik,

A number of things here...

Insert + s is a global setting that is maintained regardless of what
applications you run. It sticks until you change it back, or until you
reload JAWS. It should not change when you switch from one application to
another.

Ditto for typing echo.

Both screen echo and typing echo can be set individually in a configuration
file for a specific application. If you would rather have screen echo set to
none for a particular application, then use the settings center to make and
save that change. Much better to do it that way if you want it to happen all
the time.

Insert+Space and the letter S completely shuts down JAWS from any speech --
almost the same as exiting JAWS, but just a lot quicker to turn it back on
again. So of course your typing is quiet -- just as is any other JAWS
information that might be spoken, such as reading a line of text in an
E-Mail. I personally don't like to use this mode, as I'm not comfortable
with a situation when my computer appears to be unresponsive. I guess I like
noise.

Yes, that is good to know.
I tried that.
It did work.
Nice and quiet with the None setting on Screen Echo while the process did
its thing.

One thing I noticed about the Typing Echo toggle using INSERT + number 2.
If I used that method, and happened to ALT + TAB to go and check something,
then I come back and Typing Echo would be back to ON again.
Whereas the INSERT + SPACEBAR, letter F did not do this.

Thanks.

Rik,

No problem. In general, if you do have text that is appearing on your screen
during some sort of processing (which is what I think you were describing)
then you can silence it temporarily by setting screen echo to None.

You can drive yourself crazy by setting it to All.

Oh, my apologies, Dave, and list.
I was being lazy.
I write that email, then I go and look up the keystroke in Jaws help.
I see. INSERT + S is for Screen Echo. INSERT + the number 2 is for Typing
echo.
Got it.

I can reach up for the number 2 and hit it until it says "None." Or I can
hit INSERT + SPACEBAR and press S to turn ON and OFF the speech in general.

I need to review all I do not know. I need to learn more and stop being so
lazy.
Or just get my pea brain on board more of the time.

I really do not quite understand what Screen Echo is, exactly.
So I need to just find a bit of time to do nothing else but review all of
the stuff in that there JAWS Help program.
Maybe some of it will sink in and I will be a smarter user of the program.

Thanks.

Sorry if I was not clear.
I use the key sequence to temporarily turn off the Typing Echo.
And sometimes I will do it when I am walking off while a process is on and I
know JAWS will be talking stuff I do not need to hear.
such as like a ripping or something.

Sure. Quick CTRL key is the good and quick Shut Up key.
Probably the first JAWS command I ever learned! And a good one, still.
Thanks.

I wonder this.
I have been just using that command where you type INSERT and SPACEBAR, and
then press S and JAWS says SPEECH OFF, or SPEECH ON when I repeat the
keystrokes.

I have been stopping my typing echo this way, and sometimes just doing that
when JAWS is reading a lot of junk on a web page that I may not want to hear
at a particular moment.

I wonder if this is not a good practice for any other reason.
I used to configure my Typing Echo settings for different programs. But
lately I have just been doing this, turning speech off and back on.

Thanks.
Rik

If it's a later JAWS, 12 or 13,

1. Move your cursor to the row you want as column headers, usually 1 or 2.
2. Press insert+control+alt+c
This will set the row, and set JAWS to read it automatically.

To set the row headers
1. Place your cursor in the column with the important info, usually 1 or 2.
2. Press insert+control+alt+r.
This will set the row header and tell JAWS to read it automatically.

If you have headers in two rows instead of one, select a cell in each row
and press all those keys together.

OK, the keystrokes for announcing column and row titles are control alt insert C for column titles, and control alt insert R for row titles.
