If you are talking about online chat for tech support or customer support then these systems either work or they don't at least that is my experience. You should probably give a bit more information, e.g. what version of Windows, what exact "older" version of Jaws and which browser? An older version of Jaws could be Jaws 18 which now that Jaws 2019 is almost out is almost 2 years old or it could be Jaws 2014. Also, what is the website, is it public where other could try to check it out for you?

There is a Paprika app for Windows. I purchased it at one point and it was basically completely inaccessible and I was able to get a refund. They apologized for it not being accessible, but it didn’t sound like they were interested in putting too much of an effort into accessibility. Of course by now it might be a UWP app in the Windows 10 store, not sure, unfortunately these apps don’t have a great trck record of being accessible as of yet. Hopefully this will change, maybe Microsoft who also is fairly serious about accessibility at this stage could make it a condition for developers to considder accessibility if possible.

They were all lost, and I still need to type them in, again. While trying to do this, I also tried to export from Paprika to Paprika3, and somehow the only recipes that remained were the ones from Paprika3. Hey.
Nice observation with the task manager. I too noticed the two instances you mentioned, but I never checked to see what CPU % they were using. You’re right that when you can see, you would just naturally notice something crazy was going on with it, but it’s a little less obvious for us unless you look at the whole line showing the process info with, say, the JAWS cursor.
I use Process Explorer instead of the regular Task Manager, and it has a “restart” feature, which kills the process but immediately restarts it. Usually firefox just returns exactly to its previous state. Sometimes it asks me if I want to restore the last session, and I just let it do that.

I’m sure the percentage stuff for the sighted is quite visible and pretty straight forward, but it wasn’t until I was poking around with the Jaws cursor trying to figure out how to avoid not closing out the entire browser did I come across this less inconvenient workaround. Also, I upgraded to Firefox Version 62.0.2 and this hanging thing is still present. Anyway, there you go. This is what I do for this rather annoying Firefox bug.

Hi:
I’m using it successfully with both the beta and earlier versions of JAWS.
There are a few issues, such as not being able to press Enter on some links, but not all. Also, JAWS doesn’t read the address fields very well when I’m composing a message.
For simple reading and replying, which is a large percentage of my mail actions, it works adequately. when I want to compose a message.

Hi:
No mystery as to why MicroSoft wants to use Edge as default pdf reader.
For the average sighted user, Edge is able to handle pdf’s, and MS wants it that way.
I am sure the accessibility team knows about this and will recommend installing Acrobat Reader instead if asked.

Dean’s methods should work, and the one using the properties and accessing the change button, should change the default to Adobe Acrobat rather than Edge so future PDF’s will open correctly.
I think everyone may want to write accessibility@... and mention how useless Edge is for PDF files to open in Edge.

In Windows 10, there are several ways to get a pdf document to open in Adobe Reader, which is what you want. I’ll mention a couple.
First, when in the e-mail client, focus on the attachment and use the application or context menu key to see what choices are offered. One will likely be to save the document. Once you do so, go to Documents where it prob ably resides and focus on it. Use the application key and press H until you hear Open With. Adobe Acrobat Reader will probably be among the first choices, if it isn’t, the menu allows you to choose another app, and you can locate it there. If you do so, you can tab to a check box to always use this app to open pdf files.
If you can get the pdf saved, or if you have another one on your system, focus on it and press alt+enter to bring up its properties. Once there, tab once to the Change button and press space. Tab to the list of potential apps to use to open pdf files and choose adobe acrobat reader.

Now, for another challenge (to me, anyway). A medical person has emailed me an important pdf attachment. I’ve been able to open them in the past. But I haven’t needed to for a while. I’m running JAWS 2018 and Windows 10. I started using Gmail just recently and am still learning to use it.
Meanwhile, I started importing the Gmail into Windows Mail for quick and simple emails—it’s faster for me right now.
Anyway, my problem is this: PDF attachments won’t open. I press enter, and the word “EDGE” is read at the top and that’s all. So I went directly to my Gmail account, and the same thing happened. How did Edge get involved? Is there any way to be able to read this pdf attachment? Help!

I remember turning off this Thunderbird option when first starting to use Thunderbird. I don't know what TB version it was but it was during Windows 7.
I have just had to install Thunderbird to a

I've gone through the TB options, to change
the settings to my preferences. I cannot find where to turn off
the automatic getting of mail on the startup of Thunderbird.
I prefer to start TB to finish dealing with
the unread messages. Then, at my convenience, I press the F5 to

HP puts up some wallpaper before the logon screen, Mike Dell does not do that that’s why think this is unique to HP. This gives jaws part of the problem at logon. May want to try narrator or as I mentioned earlier shortcut keys at
start up.

i've been unable to use Chrome since lastweek. And google voice is not quite right on my phone. I switched to Edge for now. Think google is effecting some functions. My son's phone does the same thimg.

One thing you could try is to uncheck all the automatic startup in JAWS, then reboot the machine. JAWS won't load. Load it manually then recheck it. I've seen this work sometimes. Also, make sure you set JAWS to start Always, not just For This User. All the best Steve

Do you have to unload JFW, then use the shortcut to load it again? I am running JFW17 and have to use Seeing AI to see what is happening. JFW doesn't start speaking till the desktop is loaded. From what I can tell, JFW only will give tech support for the current version. I e-mailed them regarding an issue I have with Word 2016 and JFW17 and was told they don't support JFW17, and that I should get the latest version of JFW. So I haven't contacted them to address my JFW logon issues with Win10. Hi,
I think what is going on here is that JAWS is loading before the sound driver.
Not sure there’s a lot that VFO can do about this easily, because it only happens on certain machines.

Yes, when this occurs, which is often, I use my shortcut keys to get JAWS to speak and JAWS then speaks the LogOn screen information. Do you have an HP machine? VFO has never given me any great assistance in the matter. Even if I hit any key JAWS will not speak until I use the shortcut method. Like you, JAWS is set to start at logon.

I posted yesterday about a problem I was having whereby JAWS wouldn’t speaking on the lock screen. However, JAWS did speak when I pressed any key to dismiss the lock screen and bring up the password field.
I have since disabled the lock screen, but JAWS doesn’t speak at all on the logon screen now regardless of how long I leave it. JAWS does speak when I enter the password and the desktop comes up. I have checked, and JAWS is set to load at the logon screen.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
HP Spectre laptop, Windows 10 latest version, JAWS 2019 Beta.

In Windows 10, there are several ways to get a pdf document to open in Adobe Reader, which is what you want. I’ll mention a couple.
First, when in the e-mail client, focus on the attachment and use the application or context menu key to see what choices are offered. One will likely be to save the document. Once you do so, go to Documents where it prob ably resides and focus on it. Use the application key and press H until you hear Open With. Adobe Acrobat Reader will probably be among the first choices, if it isn’t, the menu allows you to choose another app, and you can locate it there. If you do so, you can tab to a check box to always use this app to open pdf files.
If you can get the pdf saved, or if you have another one on your system, focus on it and press alt+enter to bring up its properties. Once there, tab once to the Change button and press space. Tab to the list of potential apps to use to open pdf files and choose adobe acrobat reader.
Let us know if this doesn’t work.

First, thanks to those of you who answered my question about using convenient OCR. It’s awesome!
Now, for another challenge (to me, anyway). A medical person has emailed me an important pdf attachment. I’ve been able to open them in the past. But I haven’t needed to for a while. I’m running JAWS 2018 and Windows 10. I started using Gmail just recently and am still learning to use it.
Meanwhile, I started importing the Gmail into Windows Mail for quick and simple emails—it’s faster for me right now.
Anyway, my problem is this: PDF attachments won’t open. I press enter, and the word “EDGE” is read at the top and that’s all. So I went directly to my Gmail account, and the same thing happened. How did Edge get involved? Is there any way to be able to read this pdf attachment? Help!
