hmmm, I cannot seem to get the screen shot
function to work on either windows 732 bit or
windows 10 64 bit. I have pressed all kinds of
combinations of alt, ctrl, and windows keys along
with the print screen key and get no results
anywhere, lol! Maybe I am not holding my mouth correctly, lol!

I repeat:

Under Windows 10, as of Version 1803, you can take both a full screen
screen shot with WinKey+PrtSc, and the resulting screen shot will be
saved in Pictures\Screenshots, and a windowed screen shot with
WinKey+Alt+PrtSc, which on the vast majority of machines I've done it on
still gets saved in Videos\Captures.

Re: sending a screen shot

Mario,

You're not alone in that.  It makes no sense at all, but it is what it is.  I have reported this through the Feedback Hub quite a while back.  So far, on every machine I've worked on (and I have one report of a machine that does something else), the windowed screen shots are taken via some mechanism that involves Xbox, and I suspect that's how this weird dichotomy came to be.

What's funny, at least to me, is that the naming convention used by the windowed technique that employs Xbox is much more sensible, though the place where the files are dropped is not.

At this point I'm in the, "I couldn't care less, so long as I know where to look for the resultant screen shot," phase.  I have a sneaking suspicion that eventually both techniques will be merged with the resultant screen shots going into Pictures\Screenshots but with the file naming convention currently used by the windowed technique.

A Microsoft employee who frequents the Windows 10 for Screen Reader Users group even commented when I first reported on this that he was as confused by the current dichotomy as you and I are.

Re: Jaws 18 and Jaws 2018 sounds so difference

If you refer to audio ducking, I did give you the exact steps, here they are again:

Open the Jaws settings Centre by pressing Jaws Key+6

Press Control+Shift+D to make sure default settings are loaded

Now type the word “lower” into the search box, of course without the quotation marks

Tab once to the result, Jaws should say this:

1 Search Results list box

Lower audio volume of programs while JAWS speaks not checked

User

If this setting is checked then press the spacebar to uncheck it, then tab to OK and press the spacebar or enter.

Lastly, unload and reload Jaws or simply reboot your computer and see if this helped. I hope you can follow these steps because that is about as clear as I can make it.

Sieghard

If you are using Windows 10 make sure audio ducking Is turned off in Jaws 2018, it could be that it is lowering the volume.

To check go to settings with Jaws Key+6, press Control+Shift+D to make sure default settings are loaded and type “lower” into the search box.

You will have 1 search result which says “Lower audio volume of other programs while Jaws speaks”, make sure this is unchecked.

JAWS not speaking on Windows 10 logon screen

Edward Green

Hi,

I posted yesterday about a problem I was having whereby JAWS wouldn’t speaking on the lock screen.  However, JAWS did speak when I pressed any key to dismiss the lock screen and bring up the password field.

I have since disabled the lock screen, but JAWS doesn’t speak at all on the logon screen now regardless of how long I leave it.  JAWS does speak when I enter the password and the desktop comes up.  I have checked, and JAWS is set to load at the logon screen.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

HP Spectre laptop, Windows 10 latest version, JAWS 2019 Beta.

Thanks a lot,

Ed

No, I think he does mean Jaws 18 and Jaws 2018.

Jaws 18 was released in the fall of 2016, Jaws 2018 was released a year ago, in the fall of 2017.

I guess going forward this will be less confusing since the change to using the upcoming year for the version which is released in October continues, just so happened that this year, 2018, we had Jaws 18 and then Jaws 2018 starting in October of 2017 as the upgrade for Jaws 18.

Re: sending a screen shot

The windowed screen shots on all the systems where I've taken them, and where they end up in the Videos\Captures folder, have a file name of the format:
Window Title Date Time Stamp dot png

Some examples:   Administrator_ Windows PowerShell 9_17_2018 12_58_30 PM.png
                              Device Manager 9_19_2018 5_15_09 PM.png
                              Feedback Hub 8_22_2018 11_22_30 AM.png
How to create a capture screen via the screen button and or via the snipping tool_ - Google Chrome 8_28_2018 4_59_13 PM.png

That last one was of a Chrome browser window and the whole "How To . . ." part was the tab title for the webpage.

Even though they can get ridiculously long, it's easier to know what they're of than the full screen screenshots which get named Screenshot followed by Screenshot(1), Screenshot(2), etc.

A full screen screen shot is exactly what it sounds like - you get a shot of your whole desktop including what's showing in the taskbar, etc.

A windowed screen shot is exactly what it sounds like - the image is only of the window (or dialog box) that currently has focus, and nothing else.

Are you running Windows 10? If so then just press Windows
Key+Printscreen, go to your pictures folder > screenshots to look for
the file.
If you are still on Windows 7 tyhen taking a screenshot is a bit more
complicated, you have to press Printscreen, if I remember correctly
this will take the screenshot, but you then have to open Paint and
paste it in there, then save it as a file.
If you have OneDrive you can also configure OneDrive to take
screenshots, but as long as you are on Windows 10 there is really no
need for that.

Does anyone know if that is the same as using just the print screen key?

a minor addition: I believe if Windows 7 is used, pressing the print
screen key takes a screen shot of the entire screen, and alt+print
screen takes a snapshot of the active window that's in focus.

Hi Richard I just download and installed jaws 2018 on Monday afternoon when I was only used jaws 18!! When I was using jaws 2018 I setup all my speech and jaws pitch and etc like I have on jaws 18  but jaws 2018 isn’t loud enough for me to hear with my hearing aid  so I had to turns up the speaker volume up louder to hear better . Then 2 day later I switch back to jaws 18 it was too loud I had to turns down the speaker volume to hear jaws better so there is something strange I have to turns up louder on jaws 2018  less than jaws 18 !! In the body of your message, you only say 18. I am guessing you mean 19 sounds better or louder?

I will have to check, but did you migrate your settings from 18 when you installed the 19 beta? Otherwise, it sounds like the volumes are set differently.

Re: sending a screen shot

I repeat:

Under Windows 10, as of Version 1803, you can take both a full screen screen shot with WinKey+PrtSc, and the resulting screen shot will be saved in Pictures\Screenshots, and a windowed screen shot with WinKey+Alt+PrtSc, which on the vast majority of machines I've done it on still gets saved in Videos\Captures.

Re: Thinking of upgrading to 019

The JAWS 2019 beta fixes at least one bug related to Microsoft Word, where it wouldn’t reliably read lines of text containing comments.

In Microsoft Outlook, there was a bug whereby, upon opening a mail message, the cursor would be placed somewhere other than at the start of the message body. So far, I haven’t encountered this in JAWS 2019 beta, which suggests that it may have been resolved by the transition to the new Microsoft Office support.

I love the JAWS 2019 beta! I am an Office 365 user, and JAWS is much more responsive in the entire Office suite.

Well, it won't erase your current version, so you have nothing to lose but a little time and space.  The beta fixed my thunderbird problem, and hasn't broken anything I can find yet.

I have been having problems with 018 for a while as in, it gives an error message of needing to install a driver.  If the computer is shut down then started, no message.  If just restarted, I get the error message.  I phoned BFO this morning, talked to the tech.  He did a repair as per the directive from the error message.  Then he said, “It should work now.”   Somehow the call got disconnected before he could check.  I did not disconnect the call.  To make a long story short, you guessed it, the should was a doesn’t.  My sister who is developmentally delayed uses this term a lot when she does not want to do something.  Most of the time, they should work means it won’t. Thus I am thinking of installing 2019 to see if that fixes the problem.  I frankly don’t have time to sit on hold only to find out something does not work and the call gets disconnected before the tech finds this out.  For the record, I had to call BFO back twice before even getting through because the call mysteriously got disconnected.

Hey guys. OK so i found where it stores the screen shots. However
something very strange. When i am arrowing up and down through the
list, it doesn't say the file name. It's under user, my profile, and
under videos. I know there are screen shots in there but jaws isn't
reading the names of the files. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jed
