The layered keystroke you describe I don't think was available yet in Jaws 14, but I am not entirely certain since I used Jaws 14 a very long time ago, even have to think, in the fall of 2017 Jaws 2018 came out, so Jaws 18 was in 2016, Jaws 17 in 2015 so Jaws 14 would have been released in the fall of 2012. There would have been a keystroke to mute Jaws I think, just not sure if it was the layered keystroke or just Jaws Key+S, also, does the time elapsed still speak if you move focus away from the browser window?

Hi Dave,

I have two ideas, but someone else may know others. First you can press the JAWSKey plus the letter S and cycle through what JAWS will say. The choices are all, none and highlighted. Mine has always defaulted to highlighted.
That will stop it saying the numbers as they advance.

Or you could use the layered keystroke JAWSKey then space and then S. This has the choices of speech on demand and full speech. Remember with both of these once you are done with the streaming, you will have to reset them.

On my HP laptop, I am using Windows 7 and Jaws 14. When I am listening to streamed audio from any of the radio stations on the BBc web site, JAWS keeps announcing the elapsed time of any streamd audio I am listening too.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can stop JAWS from doing this.

Yes, I am having the problem. No, no idea how to fix it. I’ve installed a different version of Firefox and even changed some settings without any luck. you can use Chrome on Windows 7 but JAWS 13 is not likely to work with
Chrome. JAWS 2018 is compatible with Chrome. Alternatively, you can try
NVDA and Chrome if you're not able to upgrade to JAWS 2018.

Hi Marty,

Chrome actually works really well with jaws 18, I haven’t had any issues
with it at all. I also find chrome a lot faster than most other
browsers, which is one of the main reasons I use it.

Paul,  How does Crome work with JAWS 18?  I am using Firefox version 52
and JAWS 18 and it works, but I have run into problems with some web
pages and want a different browser and you say that you use Crome as
your main browser with Firefox as a back up.

I had the same issue the other day ,I’m only running  jaws 18, so looks
like that’s what the issue must be. In all fairness  I actually use
chrome as my main browser, but use Firefox as a backup. I should be able
to find and download an older version of Firefox and work out how to
prevent it updating, but just wanted to check which version of Firefox I
would be looking to download that would still work with jaws 18. Can you
confirm which version I’m looking for? As for the security  side of
everything, I completely understand risks of not using the most up to
date browser and I’m fine with that side of things, especially  since I
really only use Firefox as a backup option as I mentioned previously.

Well, I did this for a number of years. I use Eset NOD32 as my
antivirus, and I turned off all the threat measures in Firefox. I don’t
need multilayers of protection, as long as my antivirus and firewall are
working and up-to-date.

If I were going to help someone do this, I would give them caveats, but
many people don’t want to pay for another version of JAWS, and may want
to stay with their same browser.

You seem to know what you’re talking about in this group and so I don’t
want to come off as overly critical….

But are you sure helping people to do this is really a worthy cause? At
least, without some important caveats?

Mozilla themselves do not recommend doing this. Version 52 won’t even be
receiving security updates anymore. I suppose it’s all right, so long as
people understand that it should be only a temporary measure til they
get around to switching to a different course.

Hi, Marilyn. The problem is that whichever version of Firefox you had
previously, it updated automatically, and, because you don’t have JAWS
2018, Firefox 62.0 will not work with your version of JAWS.

The only thing to do is to download an earlier version of Firefox and,
after installing it, make sure you disable automatic updating of
Firefox. This takes a few steps to make sure it doesn’t update.

If you are interested, Write back. I’ll have you call me, and I’ll also
walk you through the process of disabling any future updates.

I checked on my desktop and Firefox is there but I cannot tell what
version it is.

The whole message says “Display of tab content has been disabled. Update
your screenreader software or switch to Firefox extended support release.”

My laptop is set to automatically do updates, so I don’t know what the

It is clear that they expect to improve the product but we don’t know if they will release something in the next years or simply get red of OB and implement the advanced Reading features in Jaws.

What we know is that VFO has a hole portfolio of hardware and software Reading tolos and OB features will have to be implemented somewhere.

But are you sure helping people to do this is really a worthy cause? At least, without some important caveats?

Hi, Marilyn. The problem is that whichever version of Firefox you had previously, it updated automatically, and, because you don’t have JAWS 2018, Firefox 62.0 will not work with your version of JAWS.

 

The only thing to do is to download an earlier version of Firefox and, after installing it, make sure you disable automatic updating of Firefox. This takes a few steps to make sure it doesn’t update.

 

If you are interested, Write back. I’ll have you call me, and I’ll also walk you through the process of disabling any future updates.

Paul,  I have installed Chrome and you are right, it is much faster.  I wish that I had discovered this a while ago and had all of that time back that I spent waiting for Firefox to download pages.

Chrome actually works really well with jaws 18, I haven’t had any issues with it at all. I also find chrome a lot faster than most other browsers, which is one of the main reasons I use it.

Paul,  How does Crome work with JAWS 18?  I am using Firefox version 52 and JAWS 18 and it works, but I have run into problems with some web pages and want a different browser and you say that you use Crome as your main browser with Firefox as a back up.

I had the same issue the other day ,I’m only running  jaws 18, so looks like that’s what the issue must be. In all fairness  I actually use chrome as my main browser, but use Firefox as a backup. I should be able to find and download an older version of Firefox and work out how to prevent it updating, but just wanted to check which version of Firefox I would be looking to download that would still work with jaws 18. Can you confirm which version I’m looking for? As for the security  side of everything, I completely understand risks of not using the most up to date browser and I’m fine with that side of things, especially  since I really only use Firefox as a backup option as I mentioned previously.

Well, I did this for a number of years. I use Eset NOD32 as my antivirus, and I turned off all the threat measures in Firefox. I don’t need multilayers of protection, as long as my antivirus and firewall are working and up-to-date.

JAWS keeps speaking the progress of streams

Hello everyone:

On my HP laptop, I am using Windows 7 and Jaws 14. When I am listening to streamed audio from any of the radio stations on the BBc web site, JAWS keeps announcing the elapsed time of any streamd audio I am listening too. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can stop JAWS from doing this.

Shift+Alt+A is quicker in Chrome, as it always takes you straight to alerts.  F6 means you sometimes need to cycle a few times to get there.

        This is not a system alert, it is a Firefox alert, and it does hang out for quite a while.

         Two proposed methods have been given, ALT+R  [which my gut is telling me probably won't work] or using ALT+D to get to the address bar, then Shift + Tab until you hear "Alert button," which you can then activate to get focus.
