Re: issue with installing JAWS on windows 10. The JAWS Install has failed.

Sieghard Weitzel <sieghard@...>

Have you called Jaws support? I think this happened once to me some years ago, but I can't remember what I did. If you don't want to call Jaws support here is what I would do:
While Jaws 18 is up and running, go to the FS website and download Jaws 2018 for your system, 64 bit or 32 bit.
Save the file to the desktop
Now uninstall Jaws 18 including shared components, but leave the user settings
After the system reboots, make sure you are on the desktop with Windows Key+M and press "J", you may want to start Narrator to do this until the Jaws installer starts speaking, once it does press Control+Windows Key+Enter to exit Narrator again.
See if Jaws 2018 will install, just in case you might want to make sure you also download a Jaws 18 installer file and have it handy.
If Jaws 2018 installs I personally would not bother putting Jaws 18 back, I don't see any advantage in using it over Jaws 2018 with Windows 10. In 2 months or less Jaws 2019 will come out, a public beta will probably come in the next couple of weeks if how things were in the last few years are an indication.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi.
someone can help?

every time I try to install the version of JAWS 2018 latest update, I
get notified with this message:
The JAWS Install has failed.

I've tried several solutions but without success...

in the freedomcientific site, I can't find anything related to this issue.
I embrace the fact that the freedomscientific Web site, is very poor in
solving problems.
the support it's a shame ...
my system is windows 10.
the system is with the latest build 18.
some of you have the solution to solve this issue?

thank you all.
cheers.

is another version of jaws running when you are installing the new version?
the installation file has its own voice when running it.
but it will not load when another screen reader is running.
i have had better luck when i install with no other screen reader running.
also log on to the computer as administrator if you arn't already.

Mario,

you did not tell what you have tried.

Do you have a previous version of jaws?

What helped on my computer was to uninstall the previous installation of
jaws and in the uninstall program you had to choose to remove shared
components too.

After this, my new jaws version would install.

Hi Mario,

Are you installing the correct version for your operating system?  What I mean is, if your computer is a 64 bit operating system  are you running the 64 bit Jaws 2018 executable / installer?

Also, do you have Jaws 2018 already installed and you're just trying to update an existing version?
Take care.  Mike.  Go Dodgers!

Re: Authorisation CD and windows 10

Mario

for anyone who doesn't know, in the future, to view the contents of a
CD/DVD that normally starts running when engaged in a optical
reader/writer, hold down the left shift key on the keyboard, insert the
CD/DVD (BD) until the drive stops whirring, press the application or
shift+f10 keys, arrow down to and enter on the open command, and now you
should be able to view the disc's contents. BTW, the first item after
pressing the application/shift+f10 keys is usually the default action
when inserting the CD/DVD/BD. holding down the left shift key prevents
the CD/DVD/BD from automatically starting.

Hi,

Ok so managed to get the problem sorted in the end. we were unable to view
the files of the authorisation CD and couldn't view the code in properties
or run the cd, but we were able to copy and paste the cd into my documents,
then from their we could view the folder contents and as advised by Mario ,
in there was a file named with the 20 digit authorisation number we needed.
I just thought I'd post back to say thanks to everyone who offered
suggestions and also to let you know how we got round the issue in case
anyone else has a similar problem in the future.

Kind regards

Hi Paul,

I don't remember all the details but it can be done from the Freedom
authorization web site. You need  to have the serial number when you go
to that site and the locking code that is  located in the "about"
section of the JAWS context menu.

When you enter these 2 pieces identifying you, Freedom will issue a one
time authorization number which is a long code and will need to be
copied and pasted in the appropriate box when you run the authorization
from JAWS.  I've done it a few times but that was a while back and I
don't remember the exact steps but this should give what you need to get
it done.

OneDrive is treated just like any other drive.  I have had no issues using Jaws with OneDrive.

Assuming you have installed it and have signed in, you can simply tap your Windows key and type onedrive and hit enter and you are there.

You can set a shortcut on your desktop if you would rather.

Then, from any other device you can log in to OneDrive and access your files.

I can access my OneDrive on my iPhone using the OneDrive app.

Yes.  Under Control Panel, I believe the item is Default Programs.  I don't have a Win7 machine to check at the moment, but there is definitely a control panel item for setting the Default Programs for specific file types.

I also believe that the "quick trick" that Sieghard mentioned also works under Windows 7, and it's much easier and faster.

Re: Protected view/Can't read email attachment

One of the first things I do for my clients who are screen reader users is to remove the loathsome "Protected View" default from MS-Office programs.  It's the second thing I do for my sighted clients.

This is an anachronism and a hold over from the days before virtually every antivirus/security suite in existence scans attachments being downloaded as a part of that process.

If you'd like to do the same:

number ? without contacting freedom scientific, just as we are in
Europe, not the US so it makes it  difficult to call and emailing may
take a while to get a reply  due  to time difference and the weekend
being almost here.

Thanks in advance  for any help

Re: Protected view/Can't read email attachment

Hi-

For any Word or Excel attachment, they will first open in protected view.  If you press F6 twice, you will hear something like “files from the internet can contain viruses. Do you want to enable editing?” There will be a yes button and you press that – the document will then be readable.  (Sometimes it will say this on the first press of F6 but it seems to me that is usually the second time I press F6.

Hope this helps

Barbara

Hello,

I received an email with three attachments …… they are word docs, not PDF.  When I open the attachment Jaws says “protected view” and I’m unable to read the document.  Could somebody please help?  It is very important and urgent that I read these attachments.  I’m using Jaws 18, Windows 10 and Outlook 2016.

Laura,

If the attachment is open in MS Word, that program protects you from opening a document sent to you by email. Because it is protected as screen reader does not have access to the text. To remove that protected status,

Press alt + F to open the file menu.

Arrow down to Info.

Right arrow until you find document status which will show the file as protected and press enter. That removes the protection and you should be able to read its contents.

Hit F6 and you will get a message to be where of emails. Tab one time to enable editing and hit the enter key.
