Hi, Mike.

That's right, but I think it works only if it's a commonly visited website
or one in your history. Let's see if I can summarize what we've discussed,
with some additional information that has come to mind.

1. Control-l brings up the edit field in which to type a Web address in
both
IE and Firefox. Control-o does the same in IE but not FF. So using
control-l
in both cases avoids confusion.

2. In Firefox, you can save yourself having to type the http://www. Prefix
and .com if you just write the Website name and press control-enter. This
shortcut works only for .com addresses.

3. In most cases, it isn't necessary to write http://www. Before the
Website
address whether in IE or FF. However, it may be necessary to write www.
Before addresses that are rarely visited and/or aren't in your history.
Also, beware of addresses that don't begin http://, such as high security
websites.

Is that a fair summary?

Hi Adrian,

In IE if I invoke the Control +l or O keystroke, type in for example,
blind-computing.com, & press enter or control + enter, IE will take me to
the webpage but, I have to put the, .com, at the end but, I don't need to
put anything in front of, blind-computing.com. IE automatically puts the,
http://www. , in the front of the URL. At least, this is the way it works
for me. Take care.

Control + L. For those who might not know what I am talking about. In
Internett Explorer when you want to open a new webpage you invoke the
Control + o, keystroke, then type in the URL where you want to go &

Hi, Friends:

These terms, Friends: Flash card, sound card, memory card and a myriad of other terms that is alien to me, but thank you for correcting my misnomer. It shows the world how much I know about the Pack mate 400. You now have given me a better reason for selling it than the size of its keyboard, which has handcuffed me since 2009.

I would rather sell it to someone on this list than selling it to anonymous person on Ebay. $1,000 is a negotiable price. Just email me back if you are interested.

Mike,

Skip both the http and ww prefixes and press control-enter after you type
the website name. I just checked with this address, and it worked.

Hi All,

When I am using IE & type in a URL, I only have to type, www.jaws-users.com,

but, when I am running Firefox, I have to type, http://www.jaws-users.com.
Can anyone tell me if there is something I can check or uncheck in Firefox
that will put in the http:// for me automatically like IE does? All advice
will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much, take care.

I've been finding IE9 has been crashing a lot lately but I never put it down to JAWS. Not sure when it started, perhaps it was after the most recent JAWS update but I'm not sure.

Hi Peter

Since installing the latest JFW, IE9 would hang, and sometimes crash.

Edit fields such as may be found on m.facebook.com wouldn't work in some
cases.

When in forms mode, it was not possible to review the contents of these
fields using the arrow keys.

Also, in certain cases, combo boxes would not read whilst in forms mode.

Jaws would sit mute as the combo box was scrolled, yet exiting forms mode
and reviewing the combo box would reveal the selection made.

On certain occasions, JAWS would refuse to read the IE8 window in its
entirety, stubbornly saying blank.

Finally, I'd get an out of memory error after a browsing session when
opening windows explorer in certain situations, strange as I have 8GB of RAM
on board.

I've given up, and having reverted back to IE8, all seems fine again.

It could be my machine of course, but I do all the investigative stuff at
work in the week, I simply can't be bothered to take it up at home too.

I'm mindful that I may be doing JAWS a disservice.

You can turn this off in Internet Explorer ... Tools/Options. Then Advanced

Then OK to close.

If you don't like to hear the webvisum notifications, but you don't want to turn webvisum off, you just change jaws verbocity for firefox to advanced, and you forget about it. The problem with this is that the notifications like "captcha result is copied to your clipboard" will be not available too.

that it is active.

I too would like to know how to turn it off and on at will instead of having
it there all the time. I turned off the verbose mode and told it not to log

help any way to do what I want with it.

Thanks, I forgot about that setting, I know I had it set in an earlier
version years ago.

Rose,

I would definitely continue to refuse it.

You can turn this off in Internet Explorer ... Tools/Options. Then Advanced
Page. In the list look for Browsing. Then right under that, turn off the
option to automatically check for IE updates.

Then OK to close.

Update keeps bugging me to install IE 9. for those of you who have done so,
should I keep ignoring the message. Using Windows 7, 64.bit latest update
of Jaws, with their quirky number system I won't even try to say which
number, just the latest available last week should help anyone who really
wants to know. I keep unchecking this but it refuses to leave me alone, and
I am not sure I want the 9 version at this point.

Yes, John. I'm here, and I'm sure the world is still turning. <smile>

And, now, I'm off to install the latest Jaws 12.

So, let's hope that doesn't blow things up.

Is the list still active or just very few people subscribed to it? I
haven't seen it this quiet in a... well, never.

Hi,

Babylon is moderately accessible, and it fulfills my requirements.
Google translate is also a good online free multi-lingual dictionary, specially when used for single word translations.

Can anyone tell me what dictionary software will be compatible with JAWS 12 and Windows 7?

Thanks

Re: Problem with word

Hi Bob,

When I face similar reading problems, I convert the file to the simple text format, and then I reopen it in notepad. In Word, you can use "save as" dialogue to save the file as simple text.

An upgrade to JAWS is definitely encouraged. Until then, and if you don't mind changing the formatting, Try control plus a to highlight everything.
Then, press control plus shift plus n to switch everything to "normal" style.
Refresh the screen, and then try again.
Of course, if the styles are important, this is a bad idea. At least, however, you should be able to read the text.
Actually, before undertaking the above, a drastic step, you might check the styles in effect on some sample text.
I'm guessing it is a strange one. Try just highlighting one paragraph and changing the style for it. You can use normal, with control plus shift plus n, or pick another style after pressing control plus shift plus s.

Subject: Problem with word

I'm using JFW 8 and Word 2003. On one document, and just on this one, when I try to read it word by word as I rewrite the document, on many of the words Jaws only speaks the first letter of the word. If I read letter by letter, it reads correctly. It only happens on this one document. Any suggestions will be appreciated...

Marsha,

You have tried doing what? You are cutting off the part of messages to which
you are replying, so your comment does no good to anyone else. It's your own
little secret.
