You cant use the same hotkey for two different programs
From: Sharon
Would any of this have to do with the fact that when I create a hot key that opens IE and then Bookshare, the hot key discontinues working? This did not happen on my old win 10 machine, but only on the newer laptop. On the laptop, it only works once. If I go back in and retype the hot key letters (which are already in that field), it works again, but again only once. Also are hot keys Jaws or Windows related? Sharon

Hi Brian,
Corruption not only in the hibernation files, but any files that are stored into memory. I have seen Word documents corrupted by using fast startup. Consider if you leave Word open with a document loaded, you shut down, and the hibernation files get corrupted? Then you ain’t getting your Word file back. To me, it’s positively dangerous this feature.

Hi Jeremy,
Now it sounds like you’re a bit of a fanboy of this horrible technology.
Now take a look at this article:-
https://www.windowscentral.com/how-disable-windows-10-fast-startup
In particular, the heading labelled why you might want to disable it.
It takes up space on your hard drive. For some it doesn’t truly shut down the processor, even reports of fans spinning after shutting down.
Just accept that this may cause problems, and get on with life, enjoying fast startup as I know you do.

Ok, fair enough, one guy using the less than stellar Windows 8 (Sample size is n = 1), not to mention it was operating system corruption causing the problem and not fast boot. Still not really much of a sample from millions and millions of Windows 10 users whom don’t have these problems.

He had already done a full system shutdown and restart and this did not clear the problems. He acquired another portable wireless keyboard and mouse and the same behaviors were exhibited when these were in use, so the issue definitely was with the computer. Windows 8 uses a form of shutdown known as a hybrid shutdown by default, where certain state information is written to a file at shutdown an read back in again upon restart. I disabled this feature such that a shutdown completely powers down the laptop and retains no information regarding the prior session upon reboot. This cleared all of the keyboard issues for the laptop and external keyboards upon rebooting. ----------- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1803, Build 17134 The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing in the right place but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment. ~ Dorothy Nevill

Out of curiosity, what issues has this fast boot caused? The issue I’m most aware of is that some are bent on hearing the Windows start up sound and would gladly sacrifice performance and convenience just to hear that little wav file. J

I have a bit of a high-end computer, and I definitely notice a difference when Fast boot is on or off. I can come in and out of shutdown in about as long as it takes me to lift the lid on my laptop with fast boot on as opposed to about 35 seconds with fast boot off. This feature is also very reliable and stable--I can go for weeks without a restart. I don’t think Microsoft would have spent so much in R&D for this feature to not notice a difference in boot time.

Agreed, if using a traditional mechanical drive. However, if one is using the new solid-state drive the increased time saved is not worth any possible inconvenience. I keep this turned off and all my solid-state drive computers and see virtually no difference in time whether it is enabled or not.

I will again recommend Password Safe, which is still 100% accessible, open source, and has both an Android and iOS clone named PasswdSafe.
It can generate passwords, do auto fill in, taking you straight to the website triggered from within Password Safe itself, and you can choose to use cloud storage for your encrypted password safe file if you wish to be able to have one master file that's accessed from multiple devices and always up-to-date on all of them. Hope Williamson <isepic@...>
You really don't have to use the webpage interface unless you need to update things in the valt that it keeps. You can do everything else through the browser extensions, including automatically generate passwords. It will also autofill for you and if you're not extremely security conscious that's very convenient to have long, 30 character passwords automatically put in for you.

No, you emphatically stated one could not create a desktop shortcut to a webpage using a specific browser of one’s choice, and I stated it can in fact be done. As I read my email for the day, you came to this realization once Mario posted his message on the matter.

About a year ago I took LastPass for a test drive, and I was not happy with it. Yes, it has ad-owns/extensions for most browsers, and it will work as advertised. As a full time JAWS user, I just didn't like the webpage interface, and I didn't like the immense amount of similar features, which resulted in tricky reading since there is such a thing as too much information. You can of course give it a shot for yourself, and I'm sure there are many on these lists using it, but man, there seems to be quite a learning curve. At the time I just didn't have the time to learn how to use it as thoroughly as I'd like, so I abandoned the whole idea and went back to KeePass, which is free and easy to use. :) JR

Re: Creating Webpage Desktop Shortcuts for Any Web Browser

Hi Bill,
Both Internet Explorer and Firefox are rendered by JAWS using a virtual browser. In fact, I can drag and drop objects on the IRS webpage and alike using Firefox, but its much trickier to do using IE.
Either way, drag and drop is a bit finicky, but it’s awesome when it works. One has greatest probability of success when dragging and dropping on the same screen.

Hi, Brian. Here’s what I think is happening. When Firefox is opened in JAWS, it is opened in a “virtual view”. This means that the user is not interacting directly with the screen. Instead, the user is interacting with the contents of a buffer, a virtual screen. I can drag and drop in Internet Explorer, which is not in a “virtual view”, but not in Firefox.
