IE versus Firefox

Mike & Barbara In Arcadia <mb69mach1@...>

Hi All,

When I am using IE & type in a URL, I only have to type, www.jaws-users.com,
but, when I am running Firefox, I have to type, http://www.jaws-users.com.
Can anyone tell me if there is something I can check or uncheck in Firefox
that will put in the http:// for me automatically like IE does? All advice
will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much, take care.
Mike

Re: [Bulk] IE 9

Tony

Hi Peter

Since installing the latest JFW, IE9 would hang, and sometimes crash.

Edit fields such as may be found on m.facebook.com wouldn't work in some
cases.

When in forms mode, it was not possible to review the contents of these
fields using the arrow keys.

Also, in certain cases, combo boxes would not read whilst in forms mode.

Jaws would sit mute as the combo box was scrolled, yet exiting forms mode
and reviewing the combo box would reveal the selection made.

On certain occasions, JAWS would refuse to read the IE8 window in its
entirety, stubbornly saying blank.

Finally, I'd get an out of memory error after a browsing session when
opening windows explorer in certain situations, strange as I have 8GB of RAM
on board.

I've given up, and having reverted back to IE8, all seems fine again.

It could be my machine of course, but I do all the investigative stuff at
work in the week, I simply can't be bothered to take it up at home too.

I'm mindful that I may be doing JAWS a disservice.

Is that with the latest version of JAWS? What problems are you having? I
have noticed since the latest jaws update that the download manager doesn't
seem to be working the same.

Then OK to close.

Hi Bob,

When I face similar reading problems, I convert the file to the simple text format, and then I reopen it in notepad. In Word, you can use "save as" dialogue to save the file as simple text.

An upgrade to JAWS is definitely encouraged. Until then, and if you don't mind changing the formatting, Try control plus a to highlight everything.
Then, press control plus shift plus n to switch everything to "normal" style.
Refresh the screen, and then try again.
Of course, if the styles are important, this is a bad idea. At least, however, you should be able to read the text.
Actually, before undertaking the above, a drastic step, you might check the styles in effect on some sample text.
I'm guessing it is a strange one. Try just highlighting one paragraph and changing the style for it. You can use normal, with control plus shift plus n, or pick another style after pressing control plus shift plus s.

Hi
The reason a person might want to turn off Webvisum is that sometimes it
helps Firefox to crash.

Re: Firefox

Mike & Barbara In Arcadia <mb69mach1@...>

Hi Dan,

To prevent Webvisum from running when you open Firefox, do the following;
1. From the Firefox home page press Alt + T, for tools, & press the letter
W, for Webvisum sub menu.
2. Arrow down to preferences & press enter
3. When preferences opens you will be on the General page. Tab 3 times to
the , Automatic Log-in on startup, checkbox & press the spacebar to uncheck
this box.
4. Tab to okay, press enter to save your changes, close, & take you back to
the home page.

The Verbose Notifications checkbox that Steve spoke of is also in the
General page, right before the okay button.

Hope this has helped. Take care.

Re: Firefox

Steve <k8sp@...>

Other than that dialog, it doesn't do anything, it is totally in the background. I guess you can disable it under the add-on menu, but once you hear the two-second blurb that you are logged in, it doesn't do anything else. It doesn't slow down the browsing experience or anything.

If you want, go into the tools menu, look for the webvisum submenu, and you can disable Webvisum from starting when you launch Firefox.

Also, you can turn the notification verbose checkbox to unchecked which will cut back on what Webvisum tells you.
Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

i installed webvisum just 2 days ago and I think I know what Marcia's
concern is. I installed the firefox add-on. I find it rather annoying to
have it tell me everytime I start firefox that webvisum is logged in or else
that it is active.

I too would like to know how to turn it off and on at will instead of having
it there all the time. I turned off the verbose mode and told it not to log
in automatically but I still get an annoying dialog. I can't find in the
help any way to do what I want with it.

thanks.

Why would you bother doing that? Webvisum doesn't do a thing except sit in
the background until you send a captcha. There's no reason to turn it off.

Hi
I was just wondering. Is there a way to turn off Webvisum when you don't
need it & turn it on when you want to solve a captcha?

Just remember, as annoying as Flash updates are, they're less
annoying than
malware. And considering that Flash is about the most vulnerable
program
ever known, it's probably a good idea to keep it updated.

Just found this and thought to share with the list.

In XP Pro use the Control Panel and arrow to "Flash Player"
press Enter.
Several Tabs. Go to Advanced.

Tab to Check for Updates Automatically, which is a set of
radio buttons.

choose the one you'd like and press OK.

technical reminders

Dorothy <dorothy.ingram-gorban@...>

A bit technical I have forgotten the difference between what jaws
needs to have if using windows xp but does not need with windows 7, I should
remember since it caused a lotof trouble for me , Now is it Dcm? Or is it
mirror display drivers that windows 7 doesnot need but jaws must have using
Xp?, plus interceptors,finally
buffers. This technical stuff has rotted my brain but as most of you are so
clever I would like a bitof an update if possible Thanks in advance
Dorothy,

Sometimes if you copy and paste the whole thing into a new document, it reads just fine.

Sounds like the shared settings for word don't jive. I would say upgrade to at least jaws 11.

I'm using JFW 8 and Word 2003. On one document, and just on this one, when I try to read it word by word as I rewrite the document, on many of the words Jaws only speaks the first letter of the word. If I read letter by letter, it reads correctly. It only happens on this one document. Any suggestions will be appreciated...

Babysit it? I'm not aware of anyone who has had any problems with any websites and IE9.

Rose,

I would definitely continue to refuse it.

You can turn this off in Internet Explorer ... Tools/Options. Then Advanced
Page. In the list look for Browsing. Then right under that, turn off the
option to automatically check for IE updates.

Then OK to close.

Update keeps bugging me to install IE 9. for those of you who have done so,
should I keep ignoring the message. Using Windows 7, 64.bit latest update
of Jaws, with their quirky number system I won't even try to say which
number, just the latest available last week should help anyone who really
wants to know. I keep unchecking this but it refuses to leave me alone, and
I am not sure I want the 9 version at this point.

So, let's hope that doesn't blow things up.
