Guide to the Taskbar on Windows 10, updated for the April 2018 update

David Bailes

I've updated my guide to the Taskbar on Windows 10 for the April 2018 update (version 1803), and it's available here:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Taskbar-10-Guide.html
As before, the guide covers the start menu, search, Cortana, the taskbar buttons, the notification area, and notifications. The changes are mostly minor, but the guide covers focus assist, and the new format of Cortana's notebook.
If you're still using Windows 10  version 1709, then a guide to the taskbar for that version is still available at:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Taskbar-10-1709-Guide.html

David.

Yes, it works.

“System Exit” is the event associated with shutdown.

“Windows logoff” is associated with signing off to log on as a different user.

Hi Bill,

I downloaded the  file containing the scripts you mentioned and unzipped it. The unzip procedure creates three folders each containing 2 files.

What is the difference between “System Exit” and Windows logoff”?

Have you tried this technique and did it work?

Thanks

In case someone cannot find this page on Ehow, I am including the link below that will download the zip file containing the registry edit scripts that

will return the logon, logoff and system exit events back to the Sound settings without having to manually edit the registry.

Hi list members, it took a long time to fix concerning not hearing system sounds but everything is working as it should with windows 10 and system sounds. Jaws 16 works great with this new windows 10 update.

Hi list members, the problem was that after the update to the latest version of windows 10 that my jaws version 16 was working but I had no system sounds. After the repair of jaws 16 was done, I had other problems. What I did was to uninstall jaws 16 then reinstall jaws16. Now I have my jaws 16 and system sounds like I had before the windows 10 update.

Hi Flor

I am afraid I have never found a way of accessing Excel slicers. I could
not find an easy way to use pivot tables, either.

I had to ask one of my colleagues to create buttons on a spreadsheet to
invoke macros. However, macros can also be accessed by pressing <Alt F8>
and <Tab> and scrolling down a listbox.

Re: shut down sound for windows 10

Fair or not doesn't come into play here, I lost my sight along with 2 fingers on each hand in an accident when I was 16 and it was entirely my own stupid fault. Is it fair I can't jump into my truck and drive out into the mountains to go hunting or hiking? Is it fair that I can't see a cute girl smiling at me from across the street? OK, so that last one wouldn't happen anyways if it weren't for my beautiful seeing-eye dog *smile*.
Anyhow, what I am saying here is that we are blind (or visually impaired) and that is what we are. Is it fair that some people can't just get up from the couch to walk to the toilet because they need a wheelchair or that others like one of the Paul's on here are not only blind but also profoundly deaf? Maybe it's not fair, but it just is and so we make the best of it and are happy or we don't and are miserable.

Take care,
Sieghard

Re: all Skypes work together??

David Moore

I just wanted to let you know, that if you use the three new Skype platforms, your messages will sync to all three Skype platforms, and between all of your devices.

For example, I can chat on the Windows 10 Skype app,

And then get on my other computer, bring up Skype 8.25,

And all of my messages are all there.

There is even Skype for Web, where the layout is just like Skype 8.25, but you can use it in your browser, and not have it installed on your computer.

You can get on two or three devices, and all you do on Skype is synced on all of those devices.

That is a huge reason not to use Skype 7 anymore.

You are stuck to using one device, and not a phone at all.

Have a great one!

so, hold down the function key, right beside the ctrl key on left hand side,

They have a lot of tools, and can look on their knowledge base to see the best way to remove the ABSunset virus. During this time in safe mode, the Microsoft tech will not be able to connect with, and control your computer.

I had a stuttering problem with Windows 10 & Jaws and below is how I fixed
it.  I don't think this is your and the others' problem, but it'll only take
a minute to check it out.

How I fixed it:
1. Go to the control panel, & press enter on, Ease of Access Center.

2. Tab to, Make the computer easier to see, link & press enter.

3. Tab to, Set the thickness of the blinking cursor combobox,  It was at 3,
but I changed it to 1, & this solved the stuttering problem.

Sorry for the cross post. I've not seen any one on either list state this as
an issue, however, there are two of us here that are having the same
problem. The JAWS stutter gets so bad that you can't complete any task. The
speech will get so bad that you think that JAWS has just crashed. It also
obviously affects scanning messages, documents and even just reading items
off of your desktop.

Both of us also have Lenovo laptops and I'm not ruling that out either. The
interesting thing is that I disconnected my Braille display and it has
gotten much better, however, that's not the kind of fix I want. I'm really
interested in any feedback I can get to resolve this. We are moth using the
latest JaWS2018, but I've seen this happening for a while and just thought
it was my Laptop. We are using Windows10 and we both tried different
versions of JAWS going back to JAWS16 and till have this problem.

Bill, How quickly should I get this virus removed? If I cannot find someone with sight to help, should I leave my laptop off until I can find someone?

Cheers,

Kevin Meyers

Hi, Kevin. This is a tricky infection to eradicate. My suggestion is to call the Microsoft Answer desk.

800-936-5900

They have a lot of tools, and can look on their knowledge base to see the best way to remove the ABSunset virus. The problem you’re going to have is that you may need to start your computer in safe mode. During this time in safe mode, the Microsoft tech will not be able to connect with, and control your computer.

I used MRT and it came back saying there were no threats found. I turned off my laptop and turned it back on. The ABSunset virus still exists. Now what?

Have you tried removing this virus using the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool (MRT)?  To run MRT, type “MRT” into the Run dialog (Windows key-R).

I looked on the internet to see how to remove it. Windows defender couldn’t do anything with it. The information on the web says to download SpyHunter. Does anyone know of SpyHunter? Should windows defender be able to handle this virus?

Logon, logoff and shutdown sound for Windows 10

Hi. I tried to send this message to the JAWS list before, but it hasn't shown up in the last 27 minutes, so I am sending it again, in hopes that it will

get through this time.

In case someone cannot find this page on Ehow, I am including the link below that will download the zip file containing the registry edit scripts that

will return the logon, logoff and system exit events back to the Sound settings without having to manually edit the registry.

It just opens back doors that allow other viruses to enter your computer. It also said that it cripples some functions in Windows. You should be good for a day or two, but I wouldn’t let it hang around very long.
