Logon, logoff and shutdown sound for Windows 10
Bill White <billwhite92701@...>
Hi. I tried to send this message to the JAWS list before, but it hasn't shown up in the last 27 minutes, so I am sending it again, in hopes that it will get through this time.
In case someone cannot find this page on Ehow, I am including the link below that will download the zip file containing the registry edit scripts that will return the logon, logoff and system exit events back to the Sound settings without having to manually edit the registry.

It just opens back doors that allow other viruses to enter your computer. It also said that it cripples some functions in Windows. You should be good for a day or two, but I wouldn’t let it hang around very long.

Hi, Kevin. This is a tricky infection to eradicate. My suggestion is to call the Microsoft Answer desk.

They have a lot of tools, and can look on their knowledge base to see the best way to remove the ABSunset virus. The problem you’re going to have is that you may need to start your computer in safe mode. During this time in safe mode, the Microsoft tech will not be able to connect with, and control your computer.

ehow-to-change-the-windows-10-logoff-logon-and-shutdown-sounds-in-windows-10
How to Change the Windows 10 Logoff, Logon, and Shutdown Sounds in Windows 10 by Walter Glenn on September 29th, 2016 asb_top_1 Before Windows 10 came along, we were free to change the sounds that played when we shut down, logged off, or logged on to Windows. For some reason, Microsoft hid those sound actions from being modified in Windows 10. Here’s how to get them back. RELATED: How to Make Windows Play a Sound When You Press Caps Lock, Num Lock, or Scroll Lock Windows has always been pretty good about letting you customize every nook and cranny of the OS, including what sounds played for all kinds of different system events. You can even make Windows play a sound when you toggle your Caps Lock, Scroll Lock, and Num Lock keys. While you can still customize what sounds sounds play for most OS events, Windows 10 hid shut down, logoff, and logon from view. They’re still around, though. You just need to make a few mild changes in the Windows Registry to get them back. https://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/ads?client=ca-pub-9173525300015284&output=html&h=165&slotname=2986027408&adk=15991069&adf=1425602538&w=660&fwrn=4&lmt=1533152612&loeid=368226311&pucrd=CgwIABAAGAMgACgAOAF4Aw&rafmt=11&guci=2.2.0.0.2.2.0&format=660x165&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.howtogeek.com%2F274010%2Fhow-to-change-the-windows-10-logoff-logon-and-shutdown-sounds-in-windows-10%2F&flash=0&wgl=1&adsid=AOsWmddE8q8xUrrOrx-N02n7NUjOekCtFtfeFB1uqhN-TOLIOqPzdiOI9Q&dt=1533152611482&bpp=18&bdt=1020&fdt=38&idt=794&shv=r20180730&cbv=r20180604&saldr=aa&abxe=1&correlator=1773816009210&frm=20&pv=2&ga_vid=2052013009.1533152612&ga_sid=1533152612&ga_hid=1203869714&ga_fc=0&icsg=167815184&dssz=36&mdo=0&mso=1&rplot=4&u_tz=-300&u_his=3&u_java=0&u_h=1024&u_w=1280&u_ah=913&u_aw=1280&u_cd=24&u_nplug=1&u_nmime=139&adx=112&ady=1001&biw=1263&bih=842&scr_x=0&scr_y=0&eid=21060853%2C21062171%2C62710015%2C62710017%2C368226301%2C368226401%2C828064255&oid=3&ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F&rx=0&eae=0&fc=528& brdim=%2C%2C-8%2C63%2C1280%2C71%2C1296%2C929%2C1280%2C842&vis=1&rsz=%7C%7CeEbr%7C&abl=CS&ppjl=f&pfx=0&fu=144&bc=5&jar=2018-08-01-19&ifi=1&xpc=YSPw2VUotr&p=https%3A//www.howtogeek.com&dtd=892 frame list of 1 items Apigee API Management Gartner Magic Quadrant Report Named a leader in the 2018 Gartner Magic Quadrant. Standard warning: Registry Editor is a powerful tool and misusing it can render your system unstable or even inoperable. This is a pretty simple hack and as long as you stick to the instructions, you shouldn’t have any problems. That said, if you’ve never worked with it before, consider reading about how to use the Registry Editor before you get started. And definitely back up the Registry (and your computer!) before making changes. Open the Registry Editor by hitting Start and typing “regedit.” Press Enter to open Registry Editor and then give it permission to make changes to your PC. asb_1 In the Registry Editor, use the left sidebar to navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\EventLabels asb_2 You’re going to be making one small change in each of three different subkeys inside that EventLabels key. First, we’ll tackle the shutdown sound or, as Windows likes to call it, System Exit. Under the EventLabels key on the left side of Registry Editor, select the SystemExit subkey. On the right side, double-click the ExcludeFromCPL value. asb_3 Note that by default, the value is 1, meaning that the action is excluded from the Control Panel. Change the value to 0 and then click “OK.” asb_4 Next, you’re going to make exactly the same change in two other subkeys inside the EventLabels key: WindowsLogoff and WindowsLogon . Head into each of those folders, open the ExcludeFromCPL value inside, and change the value from 1 to 0. asb_5 No need to restart Windows. You can go ahead and test your changes right away. Open up the Sound Control Panel app by right-clicking the speaker icon in your Notification Area and selecting “Sounds.” asb_6 You should now see the new actions (Exit Windows, Windows Logoff, and Windows Logon) available in the selection window and you can assign whatever sounds you like to those actions. asb_7 If, for whatever reason, you want to hide those actions from the Control Panel again, just head back into Registry Editor and change each of those ExcludeFromCPL values back to 1. Download Our One-Click Registry Hacks asb_8 If you don’t feel like diving into the Registry yourself, we’ve created some registry hacks you can use. Download and unzip them first. Inside, you’ll find three folders named “System Exit Sound Hacks,” “Windows Logon Sound Hacks,” and “Windows Logoff Sound Hacks.” Inside each of those folders, you’ll find two hacks: one for adding the action to the Sounds Control Panel and one for removing the action again. Double-click the hack you want to use and click through the prompts. When you’ve applied the hack you want, the changes will take place immediately. No need to restart Windows. Shutdown-Logoff-Logon Sound Hacks RELATED: How to Make Your Own Windows Registry Hacks These hacks are really just the individual SystemExit, WindowsLogoff, and WindowsLogon subkeys, stripped down to the ExcludeFromCPL values we talked about in the previous section and then exported to a .REG file. Running either of the hacks sets that value to the appropriate number. And if you enjoy fiddling with the Registry, it’s worth taking the time to learn how to make your own Registry hacks. article end SHARE: sharer/sharer intent/tweet www.linkedin.com/shareArticle plus.google.com/share www.reddit.com/submit getpocket.com/save COMMENTS: 10 Walter Glenn is a long time computer geek and tech writer. Re: jfw 2018 and functions keys
Jed,
The exact model number would help. My guess is that your machine, like most laptops these days, defines the function key row as "smart keys" or similar that makes them do things like increase/decrease screen brightness, volume, or mute, etc. Typically in this case if you hold the Fn key while hitting the corresponding function key it should behave like it used to in the past. Trying Fn+actual function key for the JAWS commands, and seeing if that works, is an easy way to confirm whether or not "smart keys" is active. This feature can be turned off. Some brands require this to be done in UEFI/BIOS before Windows boots while others have built-in utilities to do it. I think that Dell is one of the latter. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1803, Build 17134 The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing in the right place but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment. ~ Dorothy Nevill

Hi there! Your function keys are probably set to media keys by default. Depending on the type of Dell you have, there are ways to turn the function keys back on. What type of Dell do you have?

So i have never used the keyboard on the laptop until now. so i am runninginto kind of a major problem. My function keys seem to be doing different things. For instance f1 seems to mute speech. When i hit f1, it mutes speech, and they aren't behaving normally. Any idea what could be wrong? This is a del laptop. Thanks, Jed

Re: Amazon.com "Cart" page
Hope,
Thanks for confirming that the navigation by graphic in the cart is an effective trick. It's always good to hear that it works for at least two people, though I certainly didn't doubt the person who posted it, either. I can understand entirely wanting to thoroughly review a cart before checkout. As to links in e-mails, like all other things, I am far from doctrinaire with regard to that. If you know the source of the message, they're a person or entity you trust, and there's noting in the message otherwise that sets off your alarm bells then click/activate away. That's why the facility is there: convenience. One need only be reasonably cautious, not paranoid. In fact, I see an excess of caution through outright paranoia cause far more problems in life than being reasonably cautious to even just the slightest bit cavalier ever does. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1803, Build 17134 The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing in the right place but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment. ~ Dorothy Nevill
