That and you can do other things like disabling all the pretty animations and dstuff that take constant PC resources.

As someone else suggested though, it may also be worth it to get a separate sound card too.

Hi Laura,

 

I had a stuttering problem with Windows 10 & Jaws and below is how I fixed it.  I don't think this is your and the others' problem, but it'll only take a minute to check it out.


How I fixed it:

1. Go to the control panel, & press enter on, Ease of Access Center.

 

2. Tab to, Make the computer easier to see, link & press enter.

 

3. Tab to, Set the thickness of the blinking cursor combobox,  It was at 3, but I changed it to 1, & this solved the stuttering problem.

Sorry for the cross post. I’ve not seen any one on either list state this as an issue, however, there are two of us here that are having the same problem. The JAWS stutter gets so bad that you can’t complete any task. The speech will get so bad that you think that JAWS has just crashed. It also obviously affects scanning messages, documents and even just reading items off of your desktop.

Both of us also have Lenovo laptops and I’m not ruling that out either. The interesting thing is that I disconnected my Braille display and it has gotten much better, however, that’s not the kind of fix I want. I’m really interested in any feedback I can get to resolve this. We are moth using the latest JaWS2018, but I’ve seen this happening for a while and just thought it was my Laptop. We are using Windows10 and we both tried different versions of JAWS going back to JAWS16 and till have this problem.

Amen!!   There really are important battles to be fought and won.  The presence or absence of a shutdown sound is definitely not one of them.  It's very nice to have, and I've made a major effort to find a way to provide one, but in the end it is a triviality for the very reason you state.  People were used to it, but that doesn't make it essential.  There are plenty of ways, most of which have now been mentioned repeatedly, to double check that a computer is powered down sans any system sound to indicate it's at least trying to get there.

the problem is the voice synthisizer voices share the same on board computer c p u as all the other running programs. especially programs like that are continuely accessing the drive, like antivirus and malware bytes, listening to music or you tube etc.
the c p u will pause the sound card voice a few mili seconds so it can do something else. then turn the sound card back on and continue from where it left off.
you won't notice this if your c p u is fast enough.
you might be able to stop the stuttering if you use a dedicated sound card, not a u s b headphone. which still uses the c p u to process the sound.
they have there own sound processor to take the processing load off the computer c p u so it can do other chores

It is possible to creat a batch file to shutdown Windows 10 as well as a way to play a sound. However if something is preventing Windows from shutting down I am not sure the batch file would be any better.

Hi, Laura. It’s probably a bit of one thing, and a bit of another. First, if you’re not updated to the latest build, if you have Windows 10, you’ll experience more problems.

 

Second, there are some settings in your sound card that might need changing.

 

Third, as has been written here before, you may need to update sound card drivers.

Hi,

  I use a Dell laptop and don’t have this issue .  However I have found that Dell and HP are famous for having lots of proprittary software installed and running in background. Lots of this also starts with Windows.  Not saying this cause but look at your start up programs and examine how many Dell programs are running.  Some of these, especially at start up, can conflict with JAWS and cause stuttering.  I have worked to uninstall only those that I deem essential which are  very few.   Also, if a program does not need to run at start up I eliminate from start up sequence.  Hope this helps , I know from experience, these kinds of issues are hard to find and annoying. after activating the link for the PlayShutdownSound.xml, I selected from
the first dash to the end of the commands, copied and pasted it in to
notepad, and saved it as PlayShutdownSound.xml. is this what to do, and
is there anything I have to do in notepad other than saving it?

My company also changed from LYNC to SFB, and I am seeing the same behavior you are seeing.

Where do you go to check "Read Text Automatically"?

Can you point me to the FS webinar you mention?

I do use the script for SFB from dlee.org, but I still need to use the command "[h" to read the message and then use "[I" to get back to the input window.

Good morning,

In my organization, we used to have MS lync. We are moving over to Skype for Business 2016 which is part of the Office suite 2016.

Prior to Skype for business, my MS Lync did not automatically read text messages as they were sent to me. With Skype for business now, it is doing the same. I thought this was normal until I listen to a FS webinar where JAWS was reading the texts as they appeared on the screen. It was giving all kinds of feedback which is very nice.

I verified my sfb settings in JAWS and read text automatically is checked. I even unchecked it and rechecked it and still no change. I hear a sound to alert me when a Skype message arrives or when someone replies to me but JAWS does not read the message unless I shift tab to the message area from the input area to read it manually.

Any help that anyone would have to fix this would be appreciated as I could find nothing on line or in the FS technical support.

No, startup sound won't play if fast startup is enabled, as Windows will "resume" from hybrid hibernation if this is checked.

Hi, Don. First, the Startup sound does return if Fast Startup is checked, but not the shutdown sound.

Second, Do you get other system sounds, once you are logged on? In other words, do you get a ding sound if you press semicolon when on your desktop?

You must not only check Fast Startup to get a Startup sound. You must also check the box for Startup sound in your Sound settings in the Sounds tab.

Someone said if you uncheck fast startup in the power settings the startup and shutdown sound options return. On my system they do not.
I wonder how many people that have fast startup enabled know that this does not do the same as a restart? If you have fast startup enabled you should on a regular basis do a system restart. I have fast startup disabled as I think a full shutdown gives you better overall performance. Can't think that a few more seconds for bootup is a terrible thing.

Amy,

I have also been trying to learn to use Google products. I'm finding the
calendar more difficult than any of the other apps.
If your IT department will do it for you, one really good solution is to
have them use GSuite to install an interface that permits you to continue
using Outlook for e-mail, contacts and calendar.
It works seamlessly and transparently with the Google Calendars everyone
else is using.
Definitely worth looking into.

Hi All: I'm being forced to use Google calendar instead of my beloved
Outlook calendar to match the support staff in a new leadership position
I'm assuming in my institution. I've invested quite a bit of time learning
how to work it with Jaws, and I'm reasonably satisfied except for one
thing--notifications and alerts for meetings and other events. Through
trial and error, I've learned that the calendar overall works best with
the Chrome browser. In Internet Explorer, the shortcut keys don't seem to
work (even after turning off the virtual cursor). BTW, I'm using Windows 7
stll - starting to migrate to Windows 10.
In outlook, it was easy to set a calendar event notification to popup some
time before an event. When it appeared was chosen by me. When the
notification appeared, there was a sound, and a dialogue box appears on
the screen, and I have the option to dismiss the reminder, snooze the
reminder, etc. I'm trying to duplicate this convenient feature in Google
calendar.
OK. so first, in the Google calendar settings, one can choose for
notification, Desktop Notification or Alert. Not sure what the difference
is - this is my first question. But either way, the option to have a sound
go off with the notification is only available for Desktop Notification,
so I have chosen that option. I have to have a sound.
I've also chosen a default notification timing, 30 minutes before the
event.
OK. Next, when creating an individual event, under notifications, there is
the option for it to be a PopUp, or an email. I don't want to clutter my
in-box any further, so I choose popup. Not sure exactly what that is, but
okay.

The problem: notifications may be popping up on my screen somewhere, but
most of the time, there is no sound, so I have no idea that a notification
has come up. Furthermore, if I stumble upon the popup, I can't get Jaws to
read it using e.g., insert + b.

I'm very nervous I'm going to miss important meetings until I get this
figured out!

Here are my specific questions:
1. what is the difference between a desktop notification and alert (in
settings)?
2. how do I make sure I hear a sound every time?
3. how do I find and read the notification with Jaws?
4. how do I snooze a notification?

Maybe some of the difficulties are related to using Chrome? Is there a
better browser to use that still functions with the shortcut keys? I have
to have the latter so I can easily jump to a date in the future (which you
can do with the G key (after turning off the virtual cursor).
Also, I know I can display Google calendar events in Outlook, but you
can't enter or edit google events from Outlook. The Google bit is required
so that the support staff can see my calendar and add/delete events. I
know they could do that with Outlook Exchange, but that is not an option.

I already feel like I'm having to give up limited bandwidth in my brain
to work the Google calendar, so I hope there are some easy fixes here.
Would be happy to hear from anyone with this depth of experience with
google calendar, offline if that is preferred, abower@whoi.edu.

Note that I also use Google calendar on my iPhone, and presently I'm using
that to alert me to meetings so I don't blow it on the first few days in
the new position.
