purchasing computer questions

Steve

Hi everyone,

I haven't been computer shopping in 7 years, so feel lost with choices.

I will be teaching someone Jaws, but they first need a computer.

I am looking for a Dell computer, both desktop and laptop.

Top of the line isn't necessary but efficiency is.

I know some computers work better with Jaws than others. I would appreciate some guidance.

Also, now that Microsoft Word isn't on a disc, do you download it after purchase or can a computer already have it installed, as part of the package.

Thank you very much.

Steve

I see in my system tray actions recommended that include run a quick scan, view security dashboard, whatever that is, view notification options and check for protection updates.  So what does all that mean and what do I do next?  This just showed up after I updated Windows today.  Thanks for any assistance.

Re: windows 10 pro questions

I may not have answers to all your questions, but for one thing I don’t think you can hide that play video button.

Not sure about Windows Update in Action Centre, I wasn’t aware that it should be there and as far as I am concerned there is little reason for it to be there since it is easily accessed by pressing Windows Key+I for Settings, then the end button followed by enter which takes you straight there.

As for uninstalling included  Windows 10 apps, it is possible, but it is not easily done and according to the the article below not necessarily recommended. As the author pointed out, these apps take up so little space there really is no point and most likely they’ll be back after a major Windows update, but for more information read this article:

How to Uninstall Windows 10 Built-in Apps (and How to Reinstall Them)

Subject: windows 10 pro questions

Hi. got a Toshiba satellite p6t, came with windows 7 64 bit pro, and got windows 10 64 bit pro, latest update. Need some information or some questions answered.

  1. Why do I not get the windows update in action centre?
  2. Why is the group edit and set windows to notify me of a download and then ask, says enabled, but not enabled.
  3. I cannot uninstall my universal apps, as don’t want groove music, alarms, and mail and calender. Don’t use them. But no uinstall, is there a way to do this.
  4. Also in the windows updates, get the play video button, and what’s new, how do I hide that.

Thanks for any help. Did try googling, but could not seem to find an answer.

Re: iTunes will not update

Michael Mote

Hi Marvin!  I’ve seen similar things happen when using iTunes on a Windows computer.  What you may want to do is remove iTunes, and everything Apple from your computer.  Don’t remove your music, just your iTunes program, and associated Apple programs.  You can search in your programs and features to find these:

Apple Application support, Apple Mobile Device support, Apple Software Update, Bonjour, iCloud and iTunes.

Once you have removed all of these files, I would try and reinstall iTunes again.  See if this resolves your issue.

Re: How do I ID font formats?

Actually, the keystroke is alt+windows+i.

If you bring up the quick settings with insert+v while in Word, and shift tab to the search box and type: text analyzer, you can toggle the settings for the analyzer.

I searched the web for Jaws Text Analyzer and found the contents of a webinar that goes into more detail.

At the following link, there is an option to download a zip file of the presentation:

Hello Bill,
Does your version of JAWS have the text analyzer feature? If it does, press CTRL plus windows key plus I while in a word document. This feature, when used correctly, allows one to note inconsistencies within the writing. Such inconsistencies include missing capital letters and font such as boldface T type, etc. This is not a one time keystroke. Hi,

Windows+Shift+V hasn’t worked for a long time (from what I can tell).

As for why this command is changing: the upcoming feature update to Windows 10 (Redstone 5) introduces cloud clipboard, a way to copy and paste texts and small files across devices. When this feature was introduced in a Windows Insider Preview build, Windows+V was assigned to cloud clipboard, thus Windows+Shift+V is now used to cycle through toasts (this reminds me: I need to make this clear the next time I send out screen reader advisories for Redstone 5…).

Cheers,

If I remember right, you press tab to get to single click

Hi.

I’ve looked at the system tray with both JAWS+B and INSERT+F11.  Both of these indicate Office updates are available.  Problem is I don’t know how to activate the update.  When I tried JAWS+B hitting space or enter on it did nothing, and the applications key didn’t do anything either.  When I hit INSERT+F11, I see the office update option there.  When I left double click on it, I get a ding sound and a notification that there are updates for office, and I need to click on it to start it.  I hit WINDOWS+A and I either see collapse something, or set the PC into tablet mode.  How do I activate the update?  It’s not in the list of WINDOWS+A options.

Thanks for any help.

Have a blessed day and don’t work too hard.

Re: How do I ID font formats?

Steve Matzura

JAWS Key plus F speaks font information. Changes to bold, italic, etc., are controlled by JAWS scripts, enabled in programs like Microsoft Word.

Hope this helps,

Under options you go to advanced tab, then down to accessibility and make sure play system sounds is on.

                              Hello, everyone.

First, before I say anything, I want to express my appreciation for this list, and for those who have been helping me with my latest internet browser issues.

I now have successfully gotten the download completion notification sound to work in Firefox 61.

However, I’m still having trouble getting it to work in internet explorer  11 here.

In IE, I have made sure that the “notify me when download is complete” option is checked.

However, in IE 11, when I go to accessibility, I can’t seem to find the needed option to turn download completion sounds on.

If someone can give me some additional instructions as to where to find this option and how to get there in IE 11, I’d appreciate that very much.

Thank you!
