Hi,
Correction: provided that it is enabled from Settings/Cortana and Search/Talk to Cortana/Let Cortana listen for my commands when I press the Windows logo key + C. This change was implemented since Windows 10 Version 1703. Also, Cortana itself must be enabled and available where you live.
Regarding the original question at hand: Cortana window remains open if you somehow interact with her - it won't go away automatically. In fact, Cortana always stays open (even in the background) due to the fact that the app that powers her interface (SearchUI.exe) is a universal app overlay powered by XAML.

If you don't use Cortana, Microsoft's
voice-activated personal assistant, you're missing out on some handy,
hands-free functionality -- especially now that she's fully integrated
into Windows 10, and Windows 10 is everywhere .

Like Apple's Siri and Google's Google Now, Cortana is an intelligent
personal assistant who can help you with everything from launching
applications to scheduling appointments. She can even adjust a handful
of device settings, such as toggling your Wi-Fi on and off. Microsoft
hasn't published a full list of Cortana commands, so we pulled together
this unofficial list of all the things you can ask or say to Cortana on
Windows 10 devices.

Hey, Cortana

There are a few ways to get Cortana's attention.

• Click or tap thhe Cortana button on the taskbar. If you do not see
Cortana on your taskbar, right-click the taskbar and go to Cortana >
Show Cortana icon . • If you have 'Hey, Corttana' enabled, simply say
"Hey, Cortana," followed by your question.

• If you're using a Windows Phone,, you can press and hold the search
button to activate Cortana.

Basics

• Ask abouut the weather. Ex.: "What's the weather like?" or "What will
the weather be like in two days?" or "Is it going to rain tomorrow?"

• Launch a program or open a website. Ex.:
"Launnch Mozilla Firefox" or "Open <http://CNET.com>CNET.com."

• Make a phonne call. Ex.: "Call Sarah," or "Call John on speakerphone."

• Hear Cortana read the top news headlines. Ex.: "Show me top headlines."

• Take a note in OneNote. Ex..: "Take a note" or "Note it down."

• Draft an email. Ex.: "Write an email to [contact] saying [message]."

• Draft a text message. Ex.: "Write a text to [contact] saying [message]."

• See texts oor emails from a specific person.
Ex.: "Show me emails from Timmy."

• Perform simple calcuulations. Ex.: "What's 35
times 16?" or "What's 23 minus two?"

• Perform converssions. Ex.: "What is five miles
in kilometers" or "How many teaspoons in a cup?"

• Define a word. Ex.: "What's the definition
of 'table'?" or "Do you know what 'gargantuan' means?"

• Track packages (needs email accouunt
configured in the Mail app). Ex.: "Where are my packages?"

Settings

• Turn on/off Wi-Fi.

• Turn on/off Bluettooth.

• Turn on/off Airplane Mode. list ennd

Scheduling/Reminders

"What do I have next week?" or "When is my dentist appointment?"

• Add an appointment tto your calendar. Ex.:
"Add dentist appointment to Thursday at 3 p.m."
or "Schedule phone call with Lisa tomorrow at 5 a.m."

• Move an apppointment. Ex.: "Move my dentist appointment to Friday."

• Set up reminders based on timee, person, or
location. Ex.: "Remind me to call Timmy at 2
p.m." or "Remind me to ask about vacation time
when I talk to Jenny" or "Remind me to take out
the trash when I get home." Reminders can be
one-offs or recurring (e.g., every Wednesday),
and location-based reminders require a mobile device.

• Set an alarm. Ex.: "Set an alarm for 9 a.m. or "Wake me up in an hour."

• Show me my alarms.

• Ask about major hollidays. Ex.: "What day is

• SSee basic search results, such as information
about public figures, companies, places, and pop

The PDF reader included in Google Chrome gave me quite acceptable results as well, when I last tried it.

For PDF files that contain only images of text, ABBYY FineReader can perform the OCR and convert the document, styles and formatting included, into HTML or Microsoft Word format. It’s very good for handling, for example, papers from journals that are supplied only as images in PDF files.

In addition, there's a button that will search all mail folders. I also suggest looking in the search tab of the ribbon for further options. It's the selected tab when you're entering a search, if I remember correctly.

My personal Windows machine is having stability problems at the moment, so I would rather not test this right now.

If I figure out a keyboard solution, I'll post it. Honestly, I use Office 365 and the change in that search feature has been a recent update to Outlook. I have searched for ways to revert to the simple form but have had no luck. I will post to another screen reader list to see if there are proffered key approaches or other solutions.

Subject: Search for emails in outlook 2016

Hello: I am using Windows 10, Outlook 2016 and the newest version of Jaws 2018. Up until a week ago, if I was in outlook and hit control+E, and typed in a search term or email, the items in the search requested would show up and I could simply look at those respective emails. Recently, however, when I type control+e, I see the following if I tab across: Search query; Clos search button; menu current mailbox submenu; by date button (to activate press space bar); newest on top, (to activate press space bar); and sometimes I see: all (check box checked).
My sighted assistant says that the search terms are showing up and being found, however, jaws isn't showing me them. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Hello.

Can someone tell me what results you get when using control E, and shift/control F for doing e-mail searches?

Do you get the same results for either command, or are they different?

Am using Jaws 2018, Outlook 2016 in Office 365, and Windows 7 here.

Have had considerable success here with shift control F.

Glad or should I say, sad, to see you have the same issue. This is true for other screen readers as well. I have some vision and combine Windows Magnifier with a screen reader.

  1. Hello,
  2. I¡¯m not sure about your volume problem. JAWS uses the computer¡¯s system volume but doesn¡¯t, to my knowledge have a volume control itself. Again, use the PC¡¯s system volume control to control the screen reading volume.
  3. I¡¯m not sure about your misspelled word feature. You can use F7 in a Word document and/or Outlook e-mail to find and correct misspelled words. You might want to get more help with this from the group.
  4. JAWS should already be enabled to read other languages when they¡¯re ¡°found¡± on webpages and/or other things. That is, the screen reader, when it finds a language other than English, should automatically switch to the new language and read it. I think this works with the type of synthesizer that¡¯s installed¡ªyou can have Eliquence (main synth for JAWS) use the Spanish voices or any others. However, I¡¯m not sure how to enable automatic language detection, though/seek help from the group or VFO (formerly Freedom Scientific).

Sincerely,

Ashleigh S. Piccinino

Subject: Queries with JAWS 2018

Hi all,
I recently installed JAWS 2018 and have the following queries..
1. Is there some internal volume in JAWS as my Jaws outputs a very low
volume even when the speaker of the laptop is at 80%
. The speaker has no issue as songs are being played at a much lower volume.
2. The Indian screen reader viz. Non visual display access indicates
when a word is wrongly spelt. How can I enable a similar feature in
Jaws?
3. How can I make Jaws read other languages?
Eagerly await suggestions.
Thanking you
Best

Re: Logitec 780 manual

The dongle is for using the keyboard with a computer which does not have bluetooth.
It is the same unifying receiver which comes with all the Logitech wireless 2.4 Mhz devices and it is prepaired to the keyboard.

Re: Jfw and PDF files

What mike describes is Jaws OCR and it is great for image/inaccessible PDF’s, but if a PDF is accessible it is much better to open it in Adobe and let Jaws read it, often larger PDF documents have links and headings which are usually lost with Jaws OCR.

Hi Morné,

Jaws 2018 has the ability to read PDF files as well.  Highlight the PDF file, but don't open it, open the context menu by pressing the applications / context menu key or shift + F10, arrow down to, Recognize with Jaws or something similar, and press enter.

Take Care.  Mike.  Go Dodgers!

Hello listers,

I’m a new user of JAWS, so please forgive if this question has already been asked.

I’m using the latest version of JAWS and Windows 10.

I tried to read PDF documents with Microsoft Edge and JAWS with no success.  Then I tried to set the default program (Acrobat Reader) via the control pannel also with no success.  The only defaults I get to change is for music, email and videos but no option to change the default PDF to Acrobat Reader DC.  There’s another screen reader wich works with Edge, but I do prefer to use JAWS.

Any advice would be apreciated.

Kind regards

Morné
