Glad or should I say, sad, to see you have the same issue. This is true for other screen readers as well. I have some vision and combine Windows Magnifier with a screen reader. If I figure out a keyboard solution, I'll post it. Honestly, I use Office 365 and the change in that search feature has been a recent update to Outlook. I have searched for ways to revert to the simple form but have had no luck. I will post to another screen reader list to see if there are proffered key approaches or other solutions.

Hello: I am using Windows 10, Outlook 2016 and the newest version of Jaws 2018. Up until a week ago, if I was in outlook and hit control+E, and typed in a search term or email, the items in the search requested would show up and I could simply look at those respective emails. Recently, however, when I type control+e, I see the following if I tab across: Search query; Clos search button; menu current mailbox submenu; by date button (to activate press space bar); newest on top, (to activate press space bar); and sometimes I see: all (check box checked).
My sighted assistant says that the search terms are showing up and being found, however, jaws isn't showing me them. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Re: Logitec 780 manual

The dongle is for using the keyboard with a computer which does not have bluetooth.
It is the same unifying receiver which comes with all the Logitech wireless 2.4 Mhz devices and it is prepaired to the keyboard.

Re: Jfw and PDF files

What mike describes is Jaws OCR and it is great for image/inaccessible PDF’s, but if a PDF is accessible it is much better to open it in Adobe and let Jaws read it, often larger PDF documents have links and headings which are usually lost with Jaws OCR.

Jaws 2018 has the ability to read PDF files as well.  Highlight the PDF file, but don't open it, open the context menu by pressing the applications / context menu key or shift + F10, arrow down to, Recognize with Jaws or something similar, and press enter.

Hello listers,

I’m a new user of JAWS, so please forgive if this question has already been asked.

I’m using the latest version of JAWS and Windows 10.

I tried to read PDF documents with Microsoft Edge and JAWS with no success.  Then I tried to set the default program (Acrobat Reader) via the control pannel also with no success.  The only defaults I get to change is for music, email and videos but no option to change the default PDF to Acrobat Reader DC.  There’s another screen reader wich works with Edge, but I do prefer to use JAWS.

Any advice would be apreciated.

Kind regards

Hi, Kevin. If what Jason told you doesn’t work next time you have an office update, try pressing the Windows key and search for update. a search result that says updates, system settings, should come up. This is where you install Windows updates. Often the updates for Office can be in the Windows updates.

Re: using cortana

Hi,
Correction: provided that it is enabled from Settings/Cortana and Search/Talk to Cortana/Let Cortana listen for my commands when I press the Windows logo key + C. This change was implemented since Windows 10 Version 1703. Also, Cortana itself must be enabled and available where you live.
Regarding the original question at hand: Cortana window remains open if you somehow interact with her - it won't go away automatically. In fact, Cortana always stays open (even in the background) due to the fact that the app that powers her interface (SearchUI.exe) is a universal app overlay powered by XAML.

If you don't use Cortana, Microsoft's
voice-activated personal assistant, you're missing out on some handy,
hands-free functionality -- especially now that she's fully integrated
into Windows 10, and Windows 10 is everywhere .

Like Apple's Siri and Google's Google Now, Cortana is an intelligent
personal assistant who can help you with everything from launching
applications to scheduling appointments. She can even adjust a handful
of device settings, such as toggling your Wi-Fi on and off. Microsoft
hasn't published a full list of Cortana commands, so we pulled together
this unofficial list of all the things you can ask or say to Cortana on
Windows 10 devices.

Hey, Cortana

There are a few ways to get Cortana's attention.

• Click or tap thhe Cortana button on the taskbar. If you do not see
Cortana on your taskbar, right-click the taskbar and go to Cortana >
Show Cortana icon . • If you have 'Hey, Corttana' enabled, simply say
"Hey, Cortana," followed by your question.

• If you're using a Windows Phone,, you can press and hold the search
button to activate Cortana.

Basics

• Ask abouut the weather. Ex.: "What's the weather like?" or "What will
the weather be like in two days?" or "Is it going to rain tomorrow?"

• Launch a program or open a website. Ex.:
"Launnch Mozilla Firefox" or "Open <http://CNET.com>CNET.com."

• Make a phonne call. Ex.: "Call Sarah," or "Call John on speakerphone."

• Hear Cortana read the top news headlines. Ex.: "Show me top headlines."

• Take a note in OneNote. Ex..: "Take a note" or "Note it down."

• Draft an email. Ex.: "Write an email to [contact] saying [message]."

• Draft a text message. Ex.: "Write a text to [contact] saying [message]."

• See texts oor emails from a specific person.
Ex.: "Show me emails from Timmy."

• Perform simple calcuulations. Ex.: "What's 35
times 16?" or "What's 23 minus two?"

• Perform converssions. Ex.: "What is five miles
in kilometers" or "How many teaspoons in a cup?"

• Define a word. Ex.: "What's the definition
of 'table'?" or "Do you know what 'gargantuan' means?"

• Track packages (needs email accouunt
configured in the Mail app). Ex.: "Where are my packages?"

Settings

• Turn on/off Wi-Fi.

• Turn on/off Bluettooth.

• Turn on/off Airplane Mode. list ennd

Scheduling/Reminders

"What do I have next week?" or "When is my dentist appointment?"

• Add an appointment tto your calendar. Ex.:
"Add dentist appointment to Thursday at 3 p.m."
or "Schedule phone call with Lisa tomorrow at 5 a.m."

• Move an apppointment. Ex.: "Move my dentist appointment to Friday."

• Set up reminders based on timee, person, or
location. Ex.: "Remind me to call Timmy at 2
p.m." or "Remind me to ask about vacation time
when I talk to Jenny" or "Remind me to take out
the trash when I get home." Reminders can be
one-offs or recurring (e.g., every Wednesday),

When I use Cortana a second window opens up, is
there any to prevent that window from opening?

I know the window opens up because when I alt
tab after using Cortana I have to close that window.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have not followed all of this thread, but have you tried shift+f10 to bring up the context menu on items in the task bar?

The quickest way that I’ve found is to use Alt+F within Office to get to the backstage view, then move down to the Office Account tab with Down-Arrow, then use the tab key to move across to the updates control, where you can press a button to install updates.

Hi.

I’ve looked at the system tray with both JAWS+B and INSERT+F11.  Both of these indicate Office updates are available.  Problem is I don’t know how to activate the update.  When I tried JAWS+B hitting space or enter on it did nothing, and the applications key didn’t do anything either.  When I hit INSERT+F11, I see the office update option there.  When I left double click on it, I get a ding sound and a notification that there are updates for office, and I need to click on it to start it.  I hit WINDOWS+A and I either see collapse something, or set the PC into tablet mode.  How do I activate the update?  It’s not in the list of WINDOWS+A options.

Thanks for any help.

I always assume that when someone refers to a piece of software with a version number that is wrong, that they either made a typo, or they are in a beta group and shouldn’t have mentioned anything on a public list.  Then, I delete the email and forget it.

David,

Quite sure you are correct here about sixteen being the most current version. I am using 365m my contract is paid for the year and no version 18 has appeared.

Hello,

I’m using Windows 10 and Outlook 2018. I used control, shift and F to search for certain emails in the inbox. Once I do the search I cannot get out of the search to see which emails show up. So I hit escape and then nothing shows up. What may I be doing wrong?

If you're using windows10 then they would like you to use the audible app which would be fine for me except I can't figure out how to use it.

Hi list members, i'd like to know if anyone has had problems with audible's download manager working with jaws 16? I ask this question because it seems that audible wants you to use iTunes instead of windows media player which I have because i'm using windows 10 on my system. What have audible users found that works when it comes to downloading audio books from audible's cite? Thank you for any information that you might have.
