And the term "shift focus" is the correct term.  A program has to be open already and ALT+TAB cycles through your open programs and releasing the ALT shifts focus to the window that is selected during the cycling.

If anyone wishes me to try to assist in terms of determining exactly what's happening, because there are several possibilities, please hit WinKey+PrtSc before you restart to get yourself unstuck.  That should have placed a screen shot of your desktop in whatever state it is in into your Pictures library in a folder named Screenshots in PNG format.  If you happen to have others from earlier times, the sequence is to add parenthesis, number, close parentheis to the basic name Screenshot.png, e.g., Screenshot(9).png.

E-mail me the image and I can probably tell you how you got into the state you're in.

I support Dave on this one. If you're rotating through a list of things that are open, how could they be opened any further or better by focusing on them? Answer: they cannot. Once you load data into memory and give the supervisor (a.k.a. the operating system) a memory address to pick up the next instruction, also known as running or opening a program, that's as open as it gets. Rotating through the open programs, then releasing the TAB key on one of them, does only one thing that's special--it allows the user--that's you--to interact with said program via its interface--namely, any input or output channels said program may have commandeered for that purpose, such as a keyboard, mouse, microphone, video display, audio interface, printer, or any other driver software that acts as the go-between between said program and some unknown piece of hardware. The only thing that gets opened when releasing the TAB key whilst cycling through a list of running programs is that program's user window.

If you have several programs open, ALT+TAB, cycles you through the programs
you have open. When you release both keys, Windows gives focus to that open
program.

Hi,

Pressing alt and tab cycles you through open programs on your pc releasing
alt tabl then opens that program. Normally. There is an alternative method
for task switching which is ctrl, alt and tab, this sounds more like what
you are experiencing since releasing the keys will not open the program
but leave you in the task switching window and the tab or cursor keys
just move between the list of running programs. To exit this mode pressing
enter on a program will open that program or pressing escape exits the task
switching mode. Not sure if you've already tried this but if you haven't
hopefully it solves your problem.

Hello All,

I want to state before going any further that I did search the forum archive and while there was a lot of material out there complaining about the endless announcement of clickable on webpages, but nothing that seemed to explain why or how to resolve it.  If I missed it and this turns out to be an unwelcome rerun I apologize in advance.

I am working with JAWS 2018 and the latest version of Firefox.  The pages in question are the individual item pages in the McMaster Carr online catalog (mcmaster.com).  Additional questions, but unrelated to the "clickable" issue, will be coming.

While there are certain elements on the page, particularly search result narrowing items on the left side of the page, really are "clickable" and that how I activate them when I want to include only results that include the attribute(s) in question, virtually every row and column of a table that gives dimensional or feature information for the item is being announced as "clickable" and it absolutely is not in any meaningful sense of that word.

          Can anyone tell me:

                 1.  What on earth is being indicated by saying "clickable" on text that, when one clicks on it, has absolutely no effect?  It's just plain text.

                 2.  Why anything that isn't clickable in the conventional sense of "you click it and some action will be performed" is being called such?

                 3.  How to get this insane flooding of "clickable" announcements to stop?

An example of the sort of page where you get endless "clickable" announcements from JAWS is for any one of the individual tie-down products on this McMaster Carr webpage:  https://www.mcmaster.com/#cargo-tie-downs/=1dgh56u     I believe it was also occurring on a single product description page, too, e.g., https://www.mcmaster.com/#8840t561/=1dgh5xg where the table on the page is having "clickable" announced on each and every item as one is walked through it.

Thank you in advance for any insights you have to offer.  This is entirely new "weird behavior" territory for me, particularly on the scale at which it's occurring.

Hello: I am using Windows 10, Outlook 2016 and the newest version of Jaws 2018. Up until a week ago, if I was in outlook and hit control+E, and typed in a search term or email, the items in the search requested would show up and I could simply look at those respective emails. Recently, however, when I type control+e, I see the following if I tab across: Search query; Clos search button; menu current mailbox submenu; by date button (to activate press space bar); newest on top, (to activate press space bar); and sometimes I see: all (check box checked).
My sighted assistant says that the search terms are showing up and being found, however, jaws isn't showing me them. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Nermin,

My issue is not that the headings list, per se, is acting erratically - as they do all show - but what happens after you choose one to move to is.   Since all of the level 2 headings in an Amazon search correspond to the click-through text links for a specific product returned from the search, I expect that if I move to one of those headings, then hit either Enter (if I wish to overlay my search results in the current tab, then use backspace to return to them) or CTRL+Enter (to open in a separate tab) that the link will consistently open based on which command I issued.   It does not.  Sometimes the link opens, sometimes I get nothing.

This makes no sense to me as I can see said headings/links and if I use "the sighted way" and point and click each and every one of them will open, but they're not doing that under JAWS.

I can't decide if I'm doing something wrong or the web page is somehow coded peculiarly or if there's a bug of some sort in JAWS 2018.

Re: MiKTex (LaTex) Program

Bill White

Hi, Elise. I don’t use this program, but here’s what the manual says on Google.

miktex-pdftex — DVI/PDF output from TeX

Synopsis

miktex-pdftex [option...] [[file] |  [\command...]]

Description

Run the pdfTeX typesetter on file, usually creating file.pdf.  If the file argument has no extension, .tex will be appended to it. Instead of a file name,

a set of pdfTeX commands can be given, the first of which must start with a backslash.

pdfTeX is a version of TeX that can create PDF files as well as DVI files.

In DVI mode, pdfTeX can be used as a complete replacement for the TeX engine.

The typical use of pdfTeX is with a pregenerated formats for which PDF output has been enabled.  The miktex-pdftex command uses the equivalent of the plain

TeX format, and the miktex-pdflatexcommand uses the equivalent of the LaTeX format.  To generate formats, use the -initialize switch.

In PDF mode, pdfTeX can natively handle the PDF, JPG, JBIG2 and PNG graphics formats. pdfTeX cannot include PostScript or Encapsulated PostScript (EPS)

graphics files; first convert them to PDF using epstopdf(1).

Options

--alias=name

Pretend to be program name, i.e., set program (and memory dump) name to name.

This may affect the search paths and other values used.  Using this option is equivalent to copying the program file to name and invoking name.

--aux-directory=dir

Set dir as the directory to which

auxiliary files are written.  Also look for input files in dir first, before along the normal search path.

If I figure out a keyboard solution, I'll post it. Honestly, I use Office 365 and the change in that search feature has been a recent update to Outlook. I have searched for ways to revert to the simple form but have had no luck. I will post to another screen reader list to see if there are proffered key approaches or other solutions.

Subject: Search for emails in outlook 2016

Thanks.

Coming in very late to this discussion. But I'm experiencing similar
behavior running windows 7 and jaws 18 on my Lenovo laptop. I
attributed it to the laptop being old and rather slow, but maybe
there's more to it than that.

If you have several programs open, ALT+TAB, cycles you through the programs

program.

Actually there programs open. All I can do is listen to it say "task
switching" and the name of the open programs as I alt tab. I can do nothing

but switch between programs without any further control. Do do a restart I
have to ask Cortana because none of my controls work.

Alt-Tab is the keystroke to switch between open programs.
JAWS says task switching. Apparently it is saying that even when there are
no programs open.
But, Al-Tab has no other function. So, if you are pressing alt-tab, then
that is what is causing that.

Have you tried maximizing the screen? That might help to

I tried that on both sites. Indeed didn't allow me to use insert F7. Monster
did and I still couldn't get into any of the links for a job. I even tried
putting my cursor on the first character and pressing the application key. I
just get a menu that has no choice to view a job. Any other thoughts? Is it
some setting on Internet I need to set? What about some setting in Jaws?

try using insert+f7 to get a list of the links on the page. arrow to the one
you want and press enter to activate the link.

you could also try moving to the first character of the link, press the
application key or shift+f10, and if the first choice is open, press enter
to activate it.

Hello,

Prior to upgrading to Windows10 and Jaws2018 I had no problem using
Monster.com and Indeed.com. Now I can get a list of specific jobs. Yet when
I press the enter key or space bar on the link for a particular job nothing
happens. The list of jobs still exist and I cannot activate any of the links
to a job description. What could be causing this problem? Other sites don't
have this problem.

You might also try arrowing up past the link and pressing tab to get to it

Goldwave is my all time favorite application for recording.
You will want to read the manual sections about selecting your recording
source.
You also will want the Goldwave scripts for Jaws, in which case it works
very well with Jaws. Here is the link to the scripts.

Can you record system sound with Goldwave?

I'm looking for something that I can record something from iTunes or

Does this sound like something Goldwave can do?

Does Goldwave play nice with JAWS?
