Hi Morné,
Jaws 2018 has the ability to read PDF files as well. Highlight the PDF file, but don't open it, open the context menu by pressing the applications / context menu key or shift + F10, arrow down to, Recognize with Jaws or something similar, and press enter.

Hello listers,
I’m a new user of JAWS, so please forgive if this question has already been asked.
I’m using the latest version of JAWS and Windows 10.
I tried to read PDF documents with Microsoft Edge and JAWS with no success. Then I tried to set the default program (Acrobat Reader) via the control pannel also with no success. The only defaults I get to change is for music, email and videos but no option to change the default PDF to Acrobat Reader DC. There’s another screen reader wich works with Edge, but I do prefer to use JAWS.
Any advice would be apreciated.
Kind regards Morné

MiKTex (LaTex) Program
Elise Berkley
Hello, everyone. I am teaching myself to use MikTex (LaTex) program. I have just created my first sample document. I saved it and compiled it by pressing control + T. But, when I do this, I cannot read the document. I do not know how to get it from a ".tex" file to a ".dvi" file so I can read it in a pdf viewer. Does anyone know what step I am missing after compiling? Thanks. Elise Berkley

Re: Jfw and PDF files
If you open a PDF file in Adobe and it is not the default it should ask what app you want to use for PDF files and you should be able to select Adobe and tell it to always use it. Otherwise you can go to Settings > Apps > Default apps and click on “Select app by file type” or something very similar to that. It will take a bit of time for this screen to open and you unfortunately have to tab through to “PDF”, the list is alphabetical and it is a lot of tabbing. Anyways, if you currently have Edge selected as the default, once you get to PDF it will says something like “PDF, Edge button”, press the spacebar and tab to Adobe DC, then press enter and Adobe will be selected as the default app to open PDF files. Keep in mind that obviously Adobe has to be first installed on the system.

Thanks, John. I thought I recall some issue out there. I opened a different file today with no noticeable issues. When I have a few minutes, I’ll run a few tests to see which files it crashes on and if there is a difference in file location, how I open them, and so on. Another lister gave some an idea that I’ll also check on.

Robin: There seems to be a known issue with JAWS and Excel 2016. The only work around that seems to help is using tab, shift tab, enter, and shift enter to move between cells. Using the arrow buttons seems to cause Excel to slow then freeze. I understand this has been reported to the JAWS people and Microsoft but no fix yet that I heard.

Has anyone had problems with the latest version of audible's download manager?

Hi list members, i'd like to know if anyone has had problems with audible's download manager working with jaws 16? I ask this question because it seems that audible wants you to use iTunes instead of windows media player which I have because i'm using windows 10 on my system. What have audible users found that works when it comes to downloading audio books from audible's cite? Thank you for any information that you might have.

Re: known issues with Excel 2016 freezes with JAWS?
Dan Longmore
Hi, I use Excel 2016, office 365 version, and while it has some minor quirks , works well. When they throw updates in from Office or JAWS this can bring unexpected issues. I would compare your 2016 Excel settings with your old ones. Just guessing here, but there may be an Excel extension or setting under “View” that needs changed and is giving JAWS grief. The crashing is what makes me go this direction.

Hi, Running Excel 2016 with JAWS 2018 build 1803. I've tried to open many files today Excel for work and been getting everything from really sluggish movement around the file to JAWS freezing when in Excel. Next week I think my laptop will get reimaged to resolve an unrelated issue and I hope to get the latest release of JAWS installed, but just wanting to know of any known issue in Excel 2016. This issue is really problematic with getting my work done. These are all files that I successfully opened when in Office 2010 and running Window Eyes, but today is my first day opening them on my new system.

Re: Broadcast software by BSI
Dan Longmore
Hi, Not sure, be careful as some aspects may be accessible and other parts of the program not at all. Can you do a test with one of their off air computers? My wife and I work in radio and this has been my experience. BSI has been around for quite a while so they may offer some assistance.

Message Hi listers: A local radio station has asked me about doing some work on the board during local football games. They say they use software from BSI. One of the programs I looked at was called “Simian”. It does look somewhat accessible, especially if I just need to play a few commercials and such. Anyone know if BSI products are usable? Thanks!
