Just to "complete the circle" you can use CTRL+O for Open just as you can use CTRL+S to Save.  These are both commands of MS-Office programs, and probably a lot more, as hitting CTRL+S here in Chrome also opens the save dialog, but what it wants to save is an HTML file.  CTRL+O also brings up an Open dialog in Chrome.

When it comes down to it, that's really not relevant.   Software developers such as Freedom Scientific have far closer contact with Microsoft Support than any of us as end users do.   If they determine that it is an underlying problem with Windows, which it could well be, they can exert more and faster pressure on Microsoft than any of us as individual end users can.

All we can do is diligently make reports when that's become necessary and let the folks who do the fixing figure out what, exactly, needs fixing.

That is indeed correct.   I've been on "the other side" as a software developer (and doing technical support) and it is impossible to fix what is not reported and/or what you cannot replicate.

It doesn't even require that the reporter be pleasant, as they can be plenty peeved, but be businesslike and, above all, accurate and descriptive of what one needs to do to replicate the problem.  That's even if it's an intermittent problem where 9 times out of 10 it will not occur and if that's the case that should be mentioned, too.

It is not unusual for something that's been working perfectly for a very long period of time to break for a given user if either they start doing something they hadn't been that triggers a code segment that has always had a bug, but that they've never been using before, or if some code change somehow didn't get tested for one path of flow that the end user is now pushing it through.   Both of the latter are far easier to isolate and fix, which I'd hope would be everyone's goal, if you can give at least some description of what you have been doing when said event occurs.

Even if you can't, making a report saying you're having a sudden set of symptoms that you've not had, or not had at all frequently, before allows a case to be made for further examination, and faster examination, if there are a number of complaints about said symptoms coming in all at once or in very rapid succession.

Thanks for the F12 recommendation. That will be a sanity saver for sure. I did turn off the back-stage on save and open, but it still shows up if I need to do a Save As to change the file name, which I often do at work. F12 seems to work for this.

While I turn off backstage and the start screen, I agree that F12 for saving is a much nicer dialogue as Control+S and the same goes for opening files, much easier to use Control+F12 rather than File > Open.

down arrow to the save category.
press tab until you get to the Don’t show backstage view when saving or opening files option and spacebar to check it.
press tab or shift+tab to the ok button and spacebar on it.

If you go into the file menu, Options, you can turn off the Backstage
view, then you can go back to using control-s to save a document.
It is some visual thing that is useless to screen reader users.

A point of personal privilege.
Goldwave is simply the most affordable professional sound editing software on the market. I started using Goldwave about 16 years ago. In those days, I was using Window-Eyes and through many hours of consulting with the Goldwave developer, Chris, and GW Micro, I created set files for Goldwave that GW Micro eventually included as factory set files.
Today I am using it with JAWS 2018, and it still is fully accessible from the keyboard. Chris maintains his commitment to accessibility.
I only use a fraction of its potential. The program has expanded and added new features over the years that many developers would have charged for, but Chris has maintained the one fee for life policy.
It is worth a lot more than the approximately $45,  one time charge for the full version. If I were buying it today, I'd gladly pay $100 for it.

about your
recording Windows sounds, and therefore things you hear over the speakers.
Download GoldWave and read about how to select recording what you hear
in the

functions before you pay.
Chances are, you can do what you want.
Best to try it and see.

This is something I have seen with computers since 2003. You can either
do what you did, and unload JAWS, or simply press both ALT keys
sequentially. That usually unsticks them.

Hello,

I'm using windows10 and jaws2018. Suddenly either the alt or control
key is stated when pressing enter, any of the arrow keys and so on.
If I unload Jaws and reload it goes away. What could be causing this to
suddenly occur?

A sound card is a piece of hardware either on the motherboard or an independent card. Sound cards have drivers or small pieces of software that enable them to work with the computer. I doubt this is a sound card issue as you would be having other problems. Try doing a repair on jars,

Hello Mario:

I have been meaning to post the below information for some weeks but kept forgetting to do so. Well! here it is:

The only difference between the demonstration version of GoldWave and the licensed version is, that after 150 keystrokes, messages appear, prompting you to upgrade. In addition, as you use the demonstration version for a longer period, there are increasing delays in response times for functions to be performed. Lastly, the maximum number of keystrokes which can be performed in the demonstration version, is three thousand.

I remember it was 300 keystrokes. it's that low to get the user to buy
it. in my opinion, it should be increased to 1000 like Dave suggested or
it should be a cripple free 30 day trial until you register it.

GoldWave will work with most Windows versions. What I brought up was
about your
recording Windows sounds, and therefore things you hear over the speakers.
Download GoldWave and read about how to select recording what you hear
in the
manual, and then decide if you want to pay for it. You can use all of its
functions before you pay.
Chances are, you can do what you want.
Best to try it and see.

You also will want the Goldwave scripts for Jaws, in which case it works

SharpKeys is popular, but since it involves registry editing one must be very careful.

See:  https://www.thewindowsclub.com/remap-keyboard-keys-windows-sharpkeys

That article also mentions KeyTweak, see:  https://www.thewindowsclub.com/keytweak-reassign-redefine-keyboard-keys which might be easier.

hmmm, the sticking of alt and ctrl keys has been around for a very long time, lol! pressing both ctrl keys and or alt keys several times quickly will unstick them most of the time. I can remember having the problem way back to 1998 if not earlier.

Hello Tom:

If you have a folder or several folders containing audio files ripped to
.mp3 format, which, when played, play at varying sound levels, you can use
MP3 Gain to change the volume of all the .MP3 files to the same audio level.

I am using this program, curtacy of Steve Matzura, who suggested it to me.
Below, are two sites where you can download MP3 Gain:

and

Hi,
I also would like to know the answer to this question.

Is there such a program which, when run against a folder of music mp3
files, would set all file volumes to a similar level.

Currently I have a few usb sticks containing numerous music tracks by
different artists but each track seems to have a different volume level.
It
would be great to set all tracks to a similar volume level regardless of
which player was used.

Thanks
Tom

Hello Everyone:

When I rip audio CD's to flac lossless audio, for example, the volume can
vary considerably from track to track.

I appreciate that the original volume was set at the original recording
company.

Does anyone know of a program, which will allow me to set the audio in the
.flac files, to 0 DB or +1 DB across all tracks and which is accessible
using JAWS?

Thanks in anticipation.

If you're on a laptop, and particularly if you have a "heavy touch" with your typing, it could be the keyboard beginning to fail.   I have a laptop right now where neither the 'i' nor 'p' keys will work and before they died were sometimes being thought to have been pressed when neighboring keys were.   One easy way to determine whether this might be what's going on is to get yourself an external keyboard that connects by USB (and which are available for less than $5, by the dozens, at a great many thrift stores) to see if the behavior persists.

Generally, software should not be the issue with regard to "sticky key" behavior (and, yes, I'm ignoring the sticky keys feature of the OS).
