Re: alt and control key seem to be stuck

If you're on a laptop, and particularly if you have a "heavy touch" with your typing, it could be the keyboard beginning to fail.   I have a laptop right now where neither the 'i' nor 'p' keys will work and before they died were sometimes being thought to have been pressed when neighboring keys were.   One easy way to determine whether this might be what's going on is to get yourself an external keyboard that connects by USB (and which are available for less than $5, by the dozens, at a great many thrift stores) to see if the behavior persists.

Generally, software should not be the issue with regard to "sticky key" behavior (and, yes, I'm ignoring the sticky keys feature of the OS).

MP3 Gain also reduces volume levels as well.

You might try MP3Gain available from https://sourceforge.net.  I have used it and it is fairly accessible with JAWS.  You might have to do a bit of hunting with the JAWS cursor, but the software does exactly what you want.  It looks at the amplitude of the track and raises it to the highest level (or a level of your choice) that does not introduce distortion.  I have used it on a folder of songs, but had a bit of difficulty when I tried it on several hundred songs at one time.  It is free as well.

This is something I have seen with computers since 2003. You can either do what you did, and unload JAWS, or simply press both ALT keys sequentially. That usually unsticks them.

Hello,

I’m using windows10 and jaws2018. Suddenly either the alt or control key is stated when pressing enter, any of the arrow keys and so on. If I unload Jaws and reload it goes away. What could be causing this to suddenly occur?

Cheers,

By the way, the term you want is normalization. Equalization refers to boosting or cutting bands of frequencies.

Oh! by the way, my question is no way related in anyway to volume equalization.

The problem with equalization, is that, if the volume of a track or all the tracks, is higher than 0 DB or 1 DB, the resulting audio for the compressed audio, can lead to distortion, varying from mild to severe.

Hello Everyone:

When I rip audio CD's to flac lossless audio, for example, the volume can vary considerably from track to track.

I appreciate that the original volume was set at the original recording company.

Does anyone know of a program, which will allow me to set the audio in the .flac files, to 0 DB or +1 DB across all tracks and which is accessible using JAWS?

Thanks in anticipation.

Dave Durber

There are a few. SharpKeys seems to be very popular.

Hello Tom:

If you have a folder or several folders containing audio files ripped to .mp3 format, which, when played, play at varying sound levels, you can use MP3 Gain to change the volume of all the .MP3 files to the same audio level. I am using this program, curtacy of Steve Matzura, who suggested it to me. Below, are two sites where you can download MP3 Gain:

https://mp3gain.en.softonic.com/download

and

https://sourceforge.net/projects/mp3gain/

Hi,
I also would like to know the answer to this question.

Is there such a program which, when run against a folder of music mp3
files, would set all file volumes to a similar level.

Currently I have a few usb sticks containing numerous music tracks by
different artists but each track seems to have a different volume level. It
would be great to set all tracks to a similar volume level regardless of
which player was used.

Thanks
Tom

List Rules

When:
Sunday, 1 July 2018
12:00am to 1:00am
(GMT-04:00) America/New York

Description:
The following is the current version of the JFW Mailing List policies. These are sent out monthly, and also available from:

http://groups.io/g/jfw/wiki/List-Policies

**List Policies**

1: Keep it clean. We're a family list, and there are people here who probably don't want to hear everything *exactly* that's running through your head. If you wouldn't see it on TV, it doesn't belong in a post to the list. If you're not sure, email the administration before you post it to the list. Otherwise, you stand to see your posts moderated.

2: Stay on topic. We're a JFW-oriented list. That said, anything related to JFW, its functionality with programs etc is acceptable. If it doesn't have to do with JFW, it doesn't belong on the list. This includes, but isn't limited to, talk of other screen readers such as Window Eyes.

3: Listen to, and respect, the wishes of the admins/moderators. If you're asked by an admin or moderator to drop a subject, or take something to private emails (in the instance of two people carrying on a thread list-wide), please do so. If the subject is changed on a thread by an admin or moderator, it will be explained why in the email sent out with it. Please don't continue replying to the old subject.

4: Don't ask over the list for a position on the list administration. If you'd like to help out, it's of course welcome, but address the request to do so to the admin team, otherwise it'll be ignored. Requests are always welcome, whether help is being looked for or not. When help is needed, a post will be made to the list. The requests already received will be kept in mind.

5: Keep flaming to a minimum. This is not limited to flaming of each other, but goes beyond that, to flaming of products, opinions, ideas, suggestions, etc. Constructive criticism never hurts. Flame wars, especially public ones, both drive people from this list and are unwelcome here. either take the problem to private emails, or report the problem to list administration.

6. Respect the opinions and views of others. This is *very* important in any environment, most especially an online environment where the only gage one has on a person is what that person puts to writing. If you come off as hostile in your posting, whether you intended to or not, people will take it as such. Online, "face value" means just that. People make mistakes, people don't always have access to the same information you do. For that matter, people don't always have the same experience you do. If you know how someone can solve their problem, great. Suggest it to them and/or the list. Do *not* proceed to tell someone, on or off list, that they have no business posting. Repeat offenders of this particular rule will be banned for a week to 30 days, depending on the severity. Serious problems will be banned permanently.

As always, if there are problems or questions with regards these policies, don't hesitate to send them off-list to jfw+owner@groups.io

James,
List Admin

Go to control panel on desktop, enter; press d for default programs and enter; tab to set default programs and enter; find web browser and enter;  find the one you want and either enter or check it and tab to OK.

I'm sure someone else will chime in.

moderated Re: Question about learning foreign languages with JAWS

Emil,

Presuming you're using MS-Word to do your assignments, it is easy to insert individual characters related to most common foreign (using English as the base) languages with a series of keystrokes.  See the search results from, https://duckduckgo.com/?q=MS-Word+foreign+characters, for the tutorial of your choice.

If you happen to know the name (or a significant part of it) for a given character you're looking for you can use the Windows built-in Character Map program pretty effectively with a screen reader, too.  If you enter enough of the character name in the search field you can often limit the returned list to one, but this works much better for special characters such as "Registered,"  "Degree," etc., than it does for letters with diacritics.

moderated tip for specifying job search results using indeed.

David Ingram

Hi list members, I want to thank Jim Fetgether for the tip for specifying job search results for indeed. I wonder if I could use the same tip when using monster? I'm not sure if that would work but I think that it is worth a try to find specific job search results. Thank you.

moderated Re: What are the differences between indeed and monster in terms of job title search results?

Jim Fettgather

Here is the way that I make absolutely certain that I get the results I want.

When you are first on the site, you have probably noticed the two edit boxes that let you type in your key words and location.
This is not really a good way to search.
Instead, when first on the site, click Browse Jobs, it will be in the Jaws list of links.
When that page loads, click Advanced job search.
You will have many edit boxes, and the second one is, "with the exact phrase."
You may get fewer results typing into this edit box, but they will be much more targetted and reflect exactly what you want.
You may continue to tab through, you will have the opportunity to choose from which web sites your jobs will appear, to choose staffing agencies or not, how close you want the listings to be, with a combo box that lets you adjust the number of miles you are willing to travel, an edit box for your city and state, and finally, the ability to specify how recent you wish the postings to be, such as any time, the last 15 days, the last 7 days, and so on.
This is definitely the best way to use the indeed site to get the results for which you are looking.
Hope this helps.

From What I've seen so far I have some of the same problems that I've experienced with monster when it comes to job title search results. Should I be using quotes around the words or is there something else that needs to be done in order that I might perform a proper job search on this job search hiring site. Hi,

Although I appreciate this isn't answering your question, but as someone who's worked in recruitment and used both sites to advertise job roles, I always found the response rate from candidates a lot higher on indeed than monster. Obviously certain job roles might be more effective on one than the other , but overall I found indeed a lot better than monster. Another site to try would be CV library , I always found their site accessibility with jaws good, but bear in mind with that comment I was looking from a point of view of a recruiter posting jobs rather than looking for jobs. But it’s a good site and very popular so has a lot of jobs advertised . I think probably the 4 most popular online job boards though in the UK are indeed, monster, Reid and cv library's , and for what its worth personally I have found indeed and cv library's my favourite out of those.
