We are using Office 365 at work, and the web interface was not very user friendly with Jaws. It works much better in the light layout.

try Bill’s suggestion or just use Tab wherever possible. Using any other key, including quick keys, may result in the link not being focused properly.
That’s what blindys have to suffer. I’m used to that on the web though...

            My issue is not that the headings list, per se, is acting erratically - as they do all show - but what happens after you choose one to move to is.   Since all of the level 2 headings in an Amazon search correspond to the click-through text links for a specific product returned from the search, I expect that if I move to one of those headings, then hit either Enter (if I wish to overlay my search results in the current tab, then use backspace to return to them) or CTRL+Enter (to open in a separate tab) that the link will consistently open based on which command I issued.   It does not.  Sometimes the link opens, sometimes I get nothing.

            This makes no sense to me as I can see said headings/links and if I use "the sighted way" and point and click each and every one of them will open, but they're not doing that under JAWS.

             I can't decide if I'm doing something wrong or the web page is somehow coded peculiarly or if there's a bug of some sort in JAWS 2018.

I also have to use the web interface for my work email, and it was horrible until I found out about this way to set the layout several months ago. It was really almost unuseable.

Hi, Brian. I think what you need to do is to move a couple of characters to the right when you go to one of these inconsistent headings. A lot of times, even when you think you are focused on a link, the JAWS virtual Cursor is not properly focused on the link. Moving a couple of characters forward on the link often resolves this problem.

rarely I will experience the same issue you described (but not with
Amazon), and believe that the website/webpage had been coded slightly in
a non standard way, thus behaving not as expected and sometimes irradically.

you can open your browser of choice and change the setting “announce attributes”. Experiment with that and see if turning it off will get rid of “clickable”. I would suspect that this is a poorly designed site and that they just overdid it.
Usually, you activate clickable elements just like you would with any link, i.e. by pressing enter or a cursor routing buttun on a Braille display.
The mouse over stuff one can hear on certain pages is a bit different, since you activate that with Control+JAWSKey+Enter. JAWS will tell you that line x has changed, and you can hen jump to the respective line using the quick key j.
Also, try experimenting with sound assignment for attributes, that will get rid of the announcement but you will still be alerted to clickable elements.

         I want to state before going any further that I did search the forum archive and while there was a lot of material out there complaining about the endless announcement of clickable on webpages, but nothing that seemed to explain why or how to resolve it.  If I missed it and this turns out to be an unwelcome rerun I apologize in advance.

         I am working with JAWS 2018 and the latest version of Firefox.  The pages in question are the individual item pages in the McMaster Carr online catalog (mcmaster.com).  Additional questions, but unrelated to the "clickable" issue, will be coming.

         While there are certain elements on the page, particularly search result narrowing items on the left side of the page, really are "clickable" and that how I activate them when I want to include only results that include the attribute(s) in question, virtually every row and column of a table that gives dimensional or feature information for the item is being announced as "clickable" and it absolutely is not in any meaningful sense of that word.

          Can anyone tell me:

                 1.  What on earth is being indicated by saying "clickable" on text that, when one clicks on it, has absolutely no effect?  It's just plain text.

                 2.  Why anything that isn't clickable in the conventional sense of "you click it and some action will be performed" is being called such?

                 3.  How to get this insane flooding of "clickable" announcements to stop?

An example of the sort of page where you get endless "clickable" announcements from JAWS is for any one of the individual tie-down products on this McMaster Carr webpage:  https://www.mcmaster.com/#cargo-tie-downs/=1dgh56u     I believe it was also occurring on a single product description page, too, e.g., https://www.mcmaster.com/#8840t561/=1dgh5xg where the table on the page is having "clickable" announced on each and every item as one is walked through it.

Thank you in advance for any insights you have to offer.  This is entirely new "weird behavior" territory for me, particularly on the scale at which it's occurring.

here is the history window output from JAWS 2018 with firefox. This is using JAWS in German, hence the German word for heading.
I never use the links list, I almost exclusively just go heading by heading using h or shift+h, or I use the numbers on the number row. This time, I used the number 2 to jump from heading to heading directly, and this is the output I’m getting:

On a smile.amazon.com page, in this one a search for car GPS:

the results of interest are all Level 2 headings, and it's far easier to cruise through those to decide what one would like to explore further than it is to try dealing with the list of links on an Amazon search results page.

That being the case, I encourage clients to bring up the list of headings with INS+F6, scan through the headings then hit enter once one encounters an item of interest, then hitting Enter again if one wants the link for that product represented by the header (which also happens to be a link) to open in the same tab as one is viewing the search results in or to use CTRL+Enter if they want it to open in a tab of its own.

The weird thing is that this technique is unpredictably erratic in the end result.  Earlier today, when using the page I gave the link to.  If one followed that technique for the first level 2 heading (which is the first product search result), it works perfectly - you zoom right over to the webpage with the product info.  However, if you pick a level 2 heading for another product that's further down the list of headings it simply doesn't; you go nowhere.  I also find it weird that no matter what heading you go to the output from JAWS is "blank."  I would think it should repeat the heading text when you use the "move to heading" function, but it doesn't.

What, if anything, am I doing wrong here?

This solution assumes you have a voip account with someone,
flowroute.com for example and you can get dids from them if you want a
phone number where someone can call you.

This also has hotkeys for answering calls (It also sets the focus of the window to the front when a call comes in, so if you’re doing something else, the answer call bubble will pop up on top), ending calls, and muting (It has a hold
button too, but there’s no assigned hotkey). There’s also a hotkey for setting the focus back to the dial pad.

The most accessible VOIP application that I have found on the PC is called FS Client. It has no affiliation with Freedom Scientific. It is very user friendly, and works better than BRIA did on the computer in my case.

For iOS Bria is definitely the way to go, Groundwire always used to be accessible as well, but I think Bria is better. They also hae a PC application, not sure how this all works now with Windows 10 and UWP apps and if desktop versions
are still supported/developed. In any case, I never did try the desktop version.

This might be a good question also on Jonathan Mosen’s Blind Phones list.

If you have a Google account I would strongly suggest you at least try out getting a Google Voice number and then playing with the Hangouts app on iOS and possibly under Chrome. One can also access the Hangouts functionality
at hangouts.google.com.

I do not believe a hold function is available, but I do know that a mute function is. I also don't know if one can use it to do multi-way calling for phone calls, but I know that one can do so for the built-in video calling
function, but that applies only to others who have Google Accounts.

My business number is a Google Voice number that I access exclusively via Hangouts. One can also use the native Google Voice webpage, too, but I haven't done that in ages because, for me, Hangouts is a superior interface.

Since it's free and not all that complicated to set up it's worth giving it a whirl and reporting back on what is, and is not, accessible via the various interfaces. If you want to talk to me off-list about this you know how
to reach me.

OH yeah. It's rather annoying.
Say if I switch from the calendar tab to the inbox and I’m in the body of the message, Jaws will sometimes just speak the calendar stuff I was just at. The annoying part is when Jaws does this, the navigation keys won't work. I can arrow up or down or by paragraph or even type if I'm emailing or whatever and Jaws is stuck on this text. In order to get focus properly back, I either have to alt plus tab and then back or maybe a control plus sshift plus tab and back.
That or say if I'm in a calendar appointment and am in the notes section of the appointment, Jaws will again, speak the other part of the appointment window (appt time and or address) or some other text like the associated email account and again, I have to shift tab and then tab back to get proper focus to have Jaws read where I actually am or where I can review what I just typed and so on.
This can happen while I'm in the middle of doing something or if the screen is idle.
I've got the fully installed Office 2016 program on my systems so I don't know if that makes any sort of difference with the Office 365 apps.

Why do I get a totally different and fully accessible page? I’m not complaining of course, but just wondering.

When I log into Office 365 and go to the Outlook Web App, the address is this:

https://outlook.office.com/owa/

 

I get very easy links for the different mailboxes, it says how many unread messages are in said mailboxes and the actual list of messages is  a table where there is a “Select All” checkbox at the top before the table and then each message has a checkbox on the left side and I can use table navigation to go down the “From” column, over to the date or subject etc. At the very bottom it says “

Connected to Microsoft Exchange”.

This also has hotkeys for answering calls (It also sets the focus of the window to the front when a call comes in, so if you’re doing something else, the answer call bubble will pop up on top), ending calls, and muting (It has a hold button too, but there’s no assigned hotkey). There’s also a hotkey for setting the focus back to the dial pad.

The most accessible VOIP application that I have found on the PC is called FS Client.  It has no affiliation with Freedom Scientific.  It is very user friendly, and works better than BRIA did on the computer in my case.

For iOS Bria is definitely the way to go, Groundwire always used to be accessible as well, but I think Bria is better. They also hae a PC application, not sure how this all works now with Windows 10 and UWP apps and if desktop versions are still supported/developed. In any case, I never did try the desktop version.

This might be a good question also on Jonathan Mosen’s Blind Phones list.

            If you have a Google account I would strongly suggest you at least try out getting a Google Voice number and then playing with the Hangouts app on iOS and possibly under Chrome.  One can also access the Hangouts functionality at hangouts.google.com.

            I do not believe a hold function is available, but I do know that a mute function is.  I also don't know if one can use it to do multi-way calling for phone calls, but I know that one can do so for the built-in video calling function, but that applies only to others who have Google Accounts.

            My business number is a Google Voice number that I access exclusively via Hangouts.  One can also use the native Google Voice webpage, too, but I haven't done that in ages because, for me, Hangouts is a superior interface.

            Since it's free and not all that complicated to set up it's worth giving it a whirl and reporting back on what is, and is not, accessible via the various interfaces.  If you want to talk to me off-list about this you know how to reach me.

Is there a call waiting feature for a second incoming call? The ability to accept/reject a call?

Perhaps a silly question since I’m not well versed in this stuff, but where or how would you obtain the phone number?
