Perfect, thanks. I found it. I was looking for both options, actually. I had been looking through the ribbons and not seeing them, but found them by using alt F followed by T.

It should be in Office 2013 as Bill said, but are you talking about Backstage or Start Screen? The backstage comes into play during saving and opeing files and you can turn on "Do Not use Backstage" under Options > Save, once you are in the save tab you can try Alt+
S.
The start screen is that initial screen which comes uop when you first open Excel or Word where you have to press escape to get rid of it. This is in Options > General and in Office 2016 it's the last option before the OK button, so you can get to it quicker if you Shift Tab 3 times or you can try Alt+H.

I recommend a couple tweeks with Office 365:

In the File menu, Options, on the general tab, tab until you get to "Show the start screen when this application starts" and uncheck it.

Then, go down to the save options which is about 4 below the general tab and make sure that "Don't show the backstage when opening or saving files" is checked.

This is the same in Word and Excel. I almost never use PowerPoint, but I suspect those settings might be there as well.

There are lots of other things you can tweek but those are more personal preference things, but the Start Screen and Backstage settings will make your experience much smoother in my very biased opinion.

yes, I understand that. let me try to clarify my inquiry...

if the settings are changed while using Word, do the changes only apply
to when Word is used or do the changes also apply to when the other
programs of that version of Office is also used?

I recommend a couple tweeks with Office 365:

In the File menu, Options, on the general tab, tab until you get to
"Show the start screen when this application starts" and uncheck it.

Then, go down to the save options which is about 4 below the general tab
and make sure that "Don't show the backstage when opening or saving
files" is checked.

This is the same in Word and Excel.  I almost never use PowerPoint, but
I suspect those settings might be there as well.

There are lots of other things you can tweek but those are more personal
preference things, but the Start Screen and Backstage settings will make
your experience much smoother in my very biased opinion.

Hi Bill,

The reason I asked was because I was trying to find an option like this and couldn't find it.

Hi, Kevin. May I suggest the following for the future, when you are trying to create a shortcut on your desktop for an app:

1. Go to your desktop and make sure nothing is selected. To do this: press CONTROL plus SPACE until it says, Not Selected.

2. Press Applications Key or SHIFT plus F10, and Arrow down to New Submenu, and press ENTER.

3. ARROW down to Shortcut and press ENTER.

4. When it asks you to type the location of the shortcut, type

%windir%\explorer.exe shell:Appsfolder

5. TAB to the Next button and press ENTER.

6. When it asks for a name for the shortcut, press the DELETE key and type

AppsFolder.

7. TAB to the Finish button, and press ENTER.

8. Now, on your desktop, you will have a shortcut that reads:

AppsFolder.

9. If you press ENTER on this shortcut, a hidden folder will open containing all your apps.

10. Now, create any shortcut for an app as follows:

11. Press ENTER on the AppsFolder icon.

12. Use First-letter Navigation to find the app for which you want the shortcut on your desktop.

13. ARROW down to Create Shortcut, and press ENTER.

14. When it tells you that a shortcut can’t be created here, and it asks if you want a shortcut on the desktop, press ENTER on Yes.

15. That’s it. Now you will have a shortcut for your desired app on the desktop, along with the AppsFolder shortcut.

I attempted to create a short cut on the desk top for the calculator app. I brought up the start up menu and typed in calculator. I then pressed the application key. I went through the menu and file location doesn’t show up. Is there a reason this app cannot be put on the desk top?

I recommend a couple tweeks with Office 365:

In the File menu, Options, on the general tab, tab until you get to “Show the start screen when this application starts” and uncheck it.

Then, go down to the save options which is about 4 below the general tab and make sure that “Don’t show the backstage when opening or saving files” is checked.

This is the same in Word and Excel.  I almost never use PowerPoint, but I suspect those settings might be there as well.

There are lots of other things you can tweek but those are more personal preference things, but the Start Screen and Backstage settings will make your experience much smoother in my very biased opinion.

The to work good together, may be a bit of a learning curve and a few tweaks here and there, our use it every day and found that it worked good right out of the box

So I haven't touched Office since 2003, and am going to need to change that. What I'm wondering is if I'll have problems using latest JAWS version 18 with the current Office version available as a subscription. Any settings I should change to avoid giving me a headache?
