You can assign column and row titles in Excel. These are nice because they always work with Excel and are saved to the workbook. There's no risk of losing a setting in your screen reader.

To add column and row title names:

    1. Focus on the first cell in the row or column or at the first cell where the title row and title column intersect
    2. Open the Name dialog:

                                                               i.      Open the Formula ribbon (ALT-M)

ii.      Activate the “Define Name” command (M)

iii.      Within the drop-down list, activate “Define Name”

iv.      The “New Name” dialog opens

Focus is placed in the name field. Within the name field, you can name the focused cell or selected range of cells. In this case, we’re naming the column or row title:

    1. Name the cell using the following rules

                                                               i.      Start the range name with the label that tells Excel you’re creating a title range

        1. Title – This tells Excel the column and row that intersect at the active cell are a title row and column
        2. ColumnTitle – This tells Excel the focused column contains the titles for the rows within the range
        3. RowTitle – this tells Excel the focused row contains titles for the columns in the range

ii.      Add a name for the range

        1. Title_WidgetSales
        2. ColumnTitle_WidgetSales
        3. RowTitle_WidgetSales

iii.      Optional - Add the last cell in the range preceded by two periods

        1. Use this when you have multiple regions in a worksheet
        2. Title_WidgetSales..J25
        3. ColumTitle_WidgetSales..h32
        4. RowTitle_WidgetSales..r12
        5. Remember the cell address referenced is the last cell in the range for which you are creating titles

The next field in the dialog sets the scope for the name. this is a combo box. Use UP and DOWN ARROW to choose from between:

  • Workbook - the title Is unique and can’t be used elsewhere in a workbook
  • A Specific Worksheet - the name can be used elsewhere in a workbook

You can add a comment for the named cell or region, this is strictly for your personal reference and doesn’t affect the echo of the column or row title name

The last field references the cell name or range of selected cells you’re naming. You can leave this field alone.

Activate the OK button to save the name and close the dialog.

Save the workbook and the titles are permanently saved and will work on any computer.

If you have titles set to echo in JAWS, the titles will echo and you won’t lose the settings.

As Anne already said, half the time you use these shortcuts they don't work or if they work they do for a while, often if I tab away from Excel tl another application they stopped working.
This came up on the Jaws beta list recently and many confirmed this and said that it was so for many versions of Jaws and it's an unreliable feature.
I didn't know about the other method and have to try it.

There is a JAWS hotkey for this.

To set the column titles, with your cursor in the appropriate row, press insert+alt+ctrl+c. If you can!
To set the row titles is insert+alt+ctrl+r.

Jed,

As it so happens I was very
recently working with a client who
was using an Excel spreadsheet for contacts in a business setting
where he needed to be able not only to check it, but update it. Of
course, when you're the front of office person, you get interrupted
a great many times while that sheet is up for either reason and you
can forget completely exactly where you were. He wanted JAWS to
re-announce the column name at any point when he transitioned from
one
column to another and, in this case,
to announce "whose row" he was on [as the
first column was the contact name]
when he transitioned from one row to another.

If one has things set up to
read the "row titles" that's all you
hear when you move up or down within a column, changing the row
you're on; otherwise you will hear nothing related to the row title
if you move from column to column within the row. If one has
things set up to read the column titles you will only have these
announced when you move left or right
to a different column, not when going up or down within a column.Â
Of course, if you use both, you'll hear one or
the other as you move, depending
on exactly which direction you're moving in.

I wrote what follows as his
cheat sheet for Excel. Shoot to the
section that starts with, " You will receive many files where the
column title row has not been defined such that JAWS can read it. ":

*Microsoft Excel*

CTRL+Home     Go to Cell A1 (first cell in worksheet)

CTRL+End        Go to last cell in
the worksheet. If you land on something
that you don’t expect, it means that there are cells used way
outside the usual rows that you use. To get to the last
cell in your working data area
get to the first cell of the first row of your actual data, hit
CTRL+Down Arrow to move to the bottom filled in row, then hit
CTRL+Right Arrow to shoot to the end of that row.

CTRL+Left Arrow Go to first cell in row

CTRL+Right Arrow Go to last cell in row

CTRL+Down Arrow Go to last cell in current column

CTRL+Up Arrow Go to first cell in current column

You will receive many files where the column title row has not been
defined such that JAWS can read it. Once you figure out which row
contains the column titles, do the following:

1.    INS+V, Bring up JAWS Verbosity Settings

2.    Type the word, column, in the Verbosity Search Box

3.    Arrow down to Column Titles Row Range Set

4.    Hit Spacebar, this should cause
JAWS to announce the row number you
were sitting on that contains the column titles. (If this is on
the first row JAWS will say one but if it’s the fifth row it will
say five.)

If you also want JAWS to announce the rows by the data that you have
in the first column, you will want to continue as follows:

1.    Hit Down Arrow to move to the Row Titles for Column Range
Set

2.    Hit spacebar and JAWS will announce
the column letter that contains
the data that will be used to announce the
row title. So you will hear A if
it’s column A, B if column B, etc.

Hello, I was using the calendar in Outlook 2016 with Jaws2018 and Windows10. In prior versions of Outlook I could arrow up and down on a particular day to see different times or tab to different events on that day. Now I cannot arrow up and down and when I tab it takes me to the next event setup on my calendar. Is there a setting I need to change how I move around the Outlook calendar?

You also have the option not to eliminate groupings but have all groups expanded.  The default view in MS-Outlook 2010 (and every version I've seen before or since is to use conversation (threaded) view, grouped by date, all groups expanded with the messages within groups being arranged from most recently received to oldest received within the group's date range.  My groups are Today, Monday, Sunday, Last Week, Two Weeks Ago, Three Weeks Ago, Earlier This Month, Last Month, Older.   All messages are shown for each, but for conversations those are collapsed by default so you don't have to plow through all the individual messages for a conversation when going through your message list.  You expand those only when you wish to get into the individual messages.  You can also set all conversations to expanded by default, but I don't recommend it.

Hi, Kevin. In case the instructions you were given to remove all groupings from Outlook are a little complicated, here is the procedure that the Microsoft Disability Services department gave me.

To Remove All Groupings From Folder

1. Open Outlook.

2. Open desired folder which is grouped.

3. Press Alt+V,A,B,W.

4. Open next folder which is grouped.

5. Press Alt+V,A,B,W again.

6. Navigate to next folder which is grouped.

7. Press Alt+V,A,B,W again.

8. Repeat steps 2, and 3 as needed until all folders are in list mode.

A while back, maybe 3 weeks ago I was having problems with JAWS.  When I turned off the computer then turned it back on, it was fine.  If I just restarted it, I would get the prompt that JAWS was missing a driver and needed to be fixed in the settings part of JAWS. The suggestion was made to uninstall JAWS then install it again, that was in the prompt.   Microsoft said it was a Freedom Scientific issue.  Freedom said it was because I was using a Mac computer that was converted to Windows so they could do nothing.  With the last JAWS update the problem has been fixed.  Now, whether I shut off the computer or just restart it, I get no error prompts.

Laura, I had dealt with static issues for a long time. A few weeks ago I found out the April release of Windows10 corrected part of the problem. Jaws told me I had to wait for the next Windows10 update in which there was no date this would come out. At the same time I was talking to Jaws I got the notice to get the most recent Jaws update. I updated my Jaws and it corrected the problem. What version of Windows and Jaws are you using?

All of a sudden and out of the blue, the sound in my computer went very static …… This was in all programs.  When I shut the computer down and turned it back on the sound is fine now.

I have gotten notifications recently about updating Dell drivers but have not done this yet …… mainly because I’ve never done this and I don’t know how.  Would not updating these drivers cause a static issue?

Thanks for any assistance.

hello;

you didn't indicate which email program your asking about, however, I check the properies of your message it appears your using outlook 2016,

if this is true,

try the following;

if you would like your inbox messages to show in one long list,

try,

alt+v=view,

now tab until you hear;

arrange by, alt+v/a/b,

you most likely will hear, dates checked,

or, just simply do the alt+v=view,

now press, a/b,

so, alt+v/a/b,

now, you need to shift+tab until you hear;

show in groups checked,  press the enter key, this will uncheck the group by date, and you will have a long list of email messages.

i hope this is what your wanting.

Hello list,

Use hardware acceleration when available Alt+Shift+r

 Use autoscrolling Alt+Shift+a
